The issue is that it’s funnier to say “this means everyone in the country is female” than “this is incoherent gibberish which means nothing”.

Would love to know how they are determining who is and is not a DEI hire, but combined with the elimination of EEO protections, its pretty clear what is going on.

I'd say its pretty easy to see who is a DEI hire and who isn't. If you consistently underperform every one on the team, and you're a minority, well... You get that label. We had one. It didn't last. The easy way to get rid of them is to let them fail on their own. Ours did when we left her alone to complete a project and she was caught googling how to do it. The problem is, google doesn't account for rad-hard materials. Nitrile O-rings don't work well for Gammas. Gotta use EPDM. Oops.

To my understanding, DEI was put in place, not to put unqualified people into positions because of their race/ethnicity/gender, but to ensure that qualified people weren’t overlooked because of their race/ethnicity/gender. Because when we didn’t have those protections in place, that was exactly what was happening. So how did “DEI hire” get twisted to become a dog whistle for when people want to say a racist/sexist thing without actually saying it?

The intentions probably did start of pure and then you get to the point where it does go so far it's counter productive. and it comes down a lot to probabilities, and fly's in the face best person for the job. Like if your an engineering firm but are required to have 50% of your engineers as female, you are likely over looking many much more competent engineers because the pool of talent is significantly smaller, you could luck out and get the cream of the crop, but the odds are not in your favor. Personally I think diverse work places are great, I just think they need to develop organically, might not happen straight away.

That said we seem to be going backwards as a society. Sex, Race, Sexual Identity seem to be three things everyone is always making a big deal, they are the three least important parts about it. There are times where some of those factors have their time and place, but by and large I could care less if someone is a Black Asian Hermaphrodite Polymerous furry. I care much more if they a nice person, an asshole, or just completely insufferable.
 
I can't speak to other industries, but I've done DEI work in tech, and it's 100% about the pipeline. And the pipeline for computer engineers in this country is filled with white dudes. They're not better; there's just more of them. A lot more. Like, 80% as of five years ago when I was still doing the work. (And most of the rest was Asian dudes.)

Is it a company's responsibility to fix the ills of society? Most CEOs will say no, that a company's responsibility is to create value for shareholders. For a while, political and social headwinds created pressure that CEOs couldn't avoid, so they made accommodations. Now those headwinds have changed.

You can mandate DEI hiring, but you can't fix the pipeline just by creating demand. It's an incredibly complicated topic. Some companies do DEI well, by investing in programs that identify and strengthen a diverse base of talent. Most companies don't have the bandwidth for that, or just don't give a shit.

Janet Petro was one of the first women at West Point, she was a top engineer at McDonnell Douglas, and she did it all without DEI programs -- and she was directly appointed by Donald Trump three days ago.

You may not agree with this stance. I don't. But the immediate jump to Godwin's Law here is a big reason why the left is losing these battles. "Disagreeing with Policy X = Being a Nazi" has been played for a long time now.
 
I will say this

I spent the vast majority of 2024 unemployed and was repeatedly told by recruiters that my demographic (40yo white straight male) made me nearly unhirable in my field because there were so many incentives for companies to hire purely on a DEI mindset that they would seek out under qualified candidates just to get the government incentive. 15 years in the industry didn't mean shit because of the color of race, gender sexual affiliation, etc. The process absolutely has been broken and it did need to be fixed, but it's intentions were always good.

Blanket rescinding it and creating a witch hunt to purge anyone suspected of it from government is not the way to fix what was broken.

My company works on the pipeline (not necessarily for engineering but the workforce as a whole). They just took half of our federal funding because the word DEI is in all our Biden era contracts.

The other half is from the DOE who is next on the list of dismantling so this administration is basically saying, if you were hoping to break the poverty cycle in your family buy a lottery ticket.

I suspect a good number of these decisions will be put on hold for a while as the courts will be very busy very soon.

My wife has been arguing for a while that if the Plan-B pills can't be sent across state lines in the mail, the boner pills should face the same fate. She would love this bill.
 
If you want my belief on why all these moves are being made, it's to install loyalists in government positions.

Remove the WFH policy for federal employees, and you're going to get quite a few that quit over it. Remove the DEI protections and you'll not only have a convenient excuse to remove someone, but also can fill those positions without worrying about the DEI makeup. Have the DOGE eliminate positions under the excuse of "inefficiency", then put others more "loyal" in those spots.

The other decisions he's made thus far have either been to put money in his pocket or simply for the sake of cruelty.

Pre-retirement, this sort of training and reinforcement was part of my work life as a manager. We had to partake in it in individual and group settings regularly. I found a lot of it to be very intriguing especially around unconscious bias.

I do think my European employer was strengthened by being a big believer in diversity. Tapping into talent from around the globe was a competitive advantage in some areas. Personally, it was a key factor that made me happy in my job with an org that sometimes moved a little too slow for my liking re: execution and risk management. I loved interacting with and learning from brilliant folks from everywhere.

I work for the feds. I see this from the inside. If you don't - stay in your lane. You have no idea how much the entire HR chain has been taken over by this shit. We passed on a nuke A ganger (submariner) for a position and hired someone who was a AA female airforce vet, who was a truck driver. Why? The hiring manager was an AA airforce vet. That hire failed miserably and firing her was a literal act of congress. So no. Has the hammer swung to far? Maybe. Maybe not. But if it stops that kind of shit? Yeah.

Not sorry 70-75% of the people who come into the pipe in my field are white dudes who came off subs or carriers. I came off a 50 cal and a rifle but I also came with 10 years of experience in the field before here as well.

It IS to the point when new people come in we wonder, based on past experiences.

Well maybe you should still be searching for a job if you haven't learned your lesson then? I mean self immolation is a thing, I get it, but even if after experiencing it, you disagree, well....
