There's a lot of high end talent at Amazon that has pretty great options elsewhere. They should tread carefully; there's already a bit of a brain drain going on in some key areas because of their work from home push. And there's a *lot* of LGBT technical firepower at AWS in particular.

I'd say its pretty easy to see who is a DEI hire and who isn't. If you consistently underperform every one on the team, and you're a minority, well... You get that label. We had one. It didn't last. The easy way to get rid of them is to let them fail on their own. Ours did when we left her alone to complete a project and she was caught googling how to do it. The problem is, google doesn't account for rad-hard materials. Nitrile O-rings don't work well for Gammas. Gotta use EPDM. Oops.

That’s the thing I don’t understand. To my understanding, DEI was put in place, not to put unqualified people into positions because of their race/ethnicity/gender, but to ensure that qualified people weren’t overlooked because of their race/ethnicity/gender. Because when we didn’t have those protections in place, that was exactly what was happening. So how did “DEI hire” get twisted to become a dog whistle for when people want to say a racist/sexist thing without actually saying it?
