He had 10 min of PP time last night....crazy....I think he's literally playing the whole PP of every PP at this point.

Watched the second period of their game list night and I don't think Ovi got about a light jog level of effort. Lots of standing around away from the puck. Looked like the Caps were playing 4 on 5 when he was on the ice.

Washington Capitals have a better 5vs5 goal differential when Ovechkin is off the ice than when he's on it since 2011.
Nice stat. The rest of team plays better when doesn't face opponent's best line and defense.

Judging the most prolific sniper in the history of the sport at 37 years old by his +/- when his team isn't very good this year...

Never change, HF.
His career history isn't assessed, but it's interesting that you bring it up.

It's a fact that he is even more of a liability than he used to be defensively, he's slower than ever, and neither him nor the coaching staff seem to want to adjust anything. It's like everyone wants to act like it's still 2012.

I wonder what his teammates think, seeing the captain get all the easy and favorable assignments, letting the other guys do all the hard work.

Ovechkin is supposed to play for the Washington Capitals but over the years, it's looked increasingly like it's the Capitals who work for ovechkin.

Considering the guy won them a cup, the first cup in the history of their franchise and is one of the all time greats, you're damn right they are going to do whatever they can to accommodate him. If all Ovie does is sit in his office sniping shot after shot, you'd have a point but he is still a hell of a player and hits like a machine. It's obvious people like you don't even watch him play.

Weird how it doesn't happen with other top players in the league then.
Bring numbers, because you sound like Ovy is a night and day different than other top players after their peak seasons.

Besides, Caps were often an unbalanced team, that's why they have only one cup. While other top teams could spread their scoring talents through different lines. Other players would be less impressive in his place.

People, +/- is meaningless when pluses and minuses are counted for empty netters. You can't just bring up "Ovechkin is -15" if 7 or 8 of that number is just empty netters at the end of games.

I'm really looking forward to a couple years from now when the Caps are going to be in a rebuilding cycle and non-competitive but Ovi is chasing Gretzky's record and that's their drawing card to sell tickets and get ratings so from top-down they're going to make zero effort whatsoever to play defense and every game will finish 8-6.

Hate the Capitals, but loved watching him raise the cup. Hope he's doing well over there... he certainly has the Devil's number. I'm kinda over him taking us behind the wood shed.

Makes sense. Take a peek at the Caps historical attendance numbers. Ovy basically built the fanbase.

Baltimore-ish

16 +/- 3% chance of success with 1:30–5:00 remaining
10 +/- 1 %
chance of success with < 1:30 remaining

This suggests good confidence that it’s better to pull the goalie before the 1:30 mark.

Asness and Brown [2018] have published a model that suggests 6:10 is the optimal goalie pull time for a one-goal deficit.

From your article ... some heavy math forumula reading, Im like 21.2% through it

He looks like he's not going to score another 100 in this league. Makes me happy.

This is the truth. Watch the games and specifically isolate on him. He coasts. Nobody else in the league would be able to get away with the lack of f***s he's playing with. Especially on the point on PP2, if the puck gets past him he doesn't even bother to skate back and floats in the neutral zone until the dman retreats and gets it back to him.

This is true but the usual suspects cast blame everywhere else like usual, father time and a lack of a team game and focus on catching Gretzky is going to look even uglier as it goes on.

The obscene offensive zone starts and PP TOI will lead to goals but it can't hide that he is 37 and his focus is really singular these days.

It's my impression that Caps fans are pretty happy to sacrifice team success on the altar of Ovechkin's record hunt. I mean if we're entirely honest, their window has been shut for a while, and they'll have to blow it all up eventually anyway. Ovechkin's record chase will at least keep the fans interested for a while on the downward slope.
