I saw a report where they said John Tavares wants a short term contract anyways. Might have been Dave Pagnotta

I expect his next deal will take him to 40 years of age - similar to Tanev.

That said I think it will likely allow management to play around with the aav which will likely start with a 4 or 5 if the team offers about 6 years of term

The smart play, is get Marner done first, because it will leave JT less room to negotiate. There is no way this guy wants to leave Toronto at this stage of his career, it isn’t unkind to squeeze him now. He had the leverage when he was in his prime, not it’s time for some return value the other way, or let him walk. He won’t.

The smart play is to let Marner walk, because it will show JT that the team is serious about winning and won't overpay.

9 goals and 10 assists in 19 games played.

Last year on a 7 year deal… yeah, this thread title now sucks.

Not as bad as the poll options. The least overpaid option is still %40 !?

HF Leafs has been slagging on this contract since day 1, just totally convinced that it would be some anchor by the last few years. Yet here he is scoring point-per-game so far in the final year.

Tavares has been great so far this season. Not just passable, not just getting points by being sheltered, not just a PP merchant, not just leeching off linemates. He's been great! Tavares wins faceoffs, forechecks, puts in constant effort, leads off-the-ice, scores big goals, plays in the hard areas, dishes with vision, and bleeds Maple Leaf Blue. Tavares is great.

40% right now.

Dubas will overpay for him in the off season. I heard he told Pits ownership... Trust the plan.

I usually find myself pulling for the underdog and long shots, but this season I’ve been cheering Tavares on.

The guy gets slagged on here to no end, and he had his C removed to be given to a player I don’t feel has done anything to earn or show that he is Captain material.

Tavares does everything asked of him and is having an excellent season thus far.

I think he’s going to continue to show us how committed he is to winning here, and will resign on a very team friendly extension.

Just one of the good guys you have to cheer for if you are a Leaf fan.

Maybe you are correct. I guess the post was more directed at people who want to see Kadri back.

If they move to bring Kadri back etc it's because they want to win in the next 2yrs. Could be the case. OEL and Tanev and Rielly ain't getting younger. May want to overload on the old now and go for broke.

If you have a brain and understand how massive. prime-of-their-career PPG 1OA player free agent contracts work, you'll appreciate the fact that you can't judge his current season at his current cap hit, the contract has to be looked at as an overall package.

Remember Jagr's $11m/per 7 year contract in 2001?
Or Brad Richards $60m/9 in 2001 where he turned garbage so fast they bought him out after 3 years?
Kovalchuk's 15 year / $100 million absurdity?
Stamkos just signed $8x4 as a guy who is borderline washed up with his injuries, how do you think that's going to go?

JT is not overpaid, unless you look at things in a complete vacuum. These contracts often look a helluva lot worse than this in the last two years of them. The guy has 19 points in 19 games right now. He's produced pretty much exactly as expected, acknowledging that his playoff performance has been meh.

We got a guy who has put up 0.95PPG, averaging 30+ goals per season, for the past seven years for zero hockey assets, just cap space.

People in this thread are "increasingly concerned" about the way his play is dropping off in the second last year of his monster UFA contract when he's still point per game. God damn Leafs fans are stupid.

Of all the reasons I hate being a Leafs fan, the collective whining and hand wringing over JT's contract has to be near the top. You know how hard it is to get 7 years of PPG production for just cap space, even if it is 11m?

There is no way to portray JTs contract as anything but a massive overpay get real. He has never been worth even close to $11 million.

That said, he’s been good so far this year. Still not worth the cap space he’s tied up though.
