How much would you give Callahan on his next contract?

If these are the options, move him at the deadline. Take a step back now to try to take two steps forward in the future.

Cally Contract

4 years, $19mm. Not much of a raise in AAV (and actually a reduction over his current salary) - he's had some injury issues, but he still has the best attitude for a captain. He'll be 33 when the new contract would end - if he's still got gas in the tank then, he can probably get another deal for a similar term/salary.

But his agent will push for a 7-year deal, probably at $6mm AAV. Which for what he brings to the table is way too much cap hit, and especially too many years. Given the injury issues, Cally may be willing to trade $ for term, which might be OK since he would then potentially retire early if the injuries do take a toll. If we could get him at less than $5mm AAV on a 7-year deal, it might be worthwhile.

Can't afford not to trade him. I salivate at what a contender would give up for him. Callahan has averaged 20.8 mins/game the past 3 seasons, not including this one. Not gonna have much left in the tank in a year or two if the plan is resign/rinse/repeat.

Call me crazy, but I'd go big with Callahan and Girardi, as long as there isn't a NMC. I have no problem re-signing guys then moving them down the road.

Even if their play does regress a tad, they're guys who will be in high demand for a long time. Maybe I'm too concerned with asset management, and letting go.

I think some people are assuming we're going to get back multiple younger assets that are going to turn out to be better players than Callahan or Girardi (or close enough) right off the bat. Not likely. So I'll assume some things too 1) that Richards will be bought out--2) that numerous others won't be re-signed--D. Moore, Pouliot, Pyatt, Asham, Powe etc. and 3) that the cap is going to go up next year--and 4) the Rangers are at least going to be in the vicinity of the cap ceiling next year--so there will be some vets making some big $ with us besides Lundqvist, Nash and McDonagh. Exactly who are they going to be? Assuming we deal Callahan/Girardi we'll be getting back younger players and prospects--at least some of which will be on ELC's so it won't be them. Doing some shopping at the UFA store would be more like it which means more of the same philosophy that has gotten us into the same messes in the past.

In regards to signing guys like Callahan, Girardi--the term is as important as the $. The question of whether they can fit in an AV system goes further than just two players and whether or not our GM can actually pull of a wholesale turnover in personnel to suit his new coaching staff which seems doubtful these days.

The other thing is I'm not sure AV is going to be around that much longer. That the Rangers might actually go into a more detailed search next time they look for a coach.

Maybe he perform better than people we pay 1.5 mill or less, then we can talk contract

I love the captain...But I'm on the side of the fence that think the trade is the better move for the organization. Add a 1st, gain a player or really good prospect back.

He'll playing poorly right now, so we're in a "third liner on a good team" phase and everyone wants to trade him. Shocker.

I'd be wary of the years on any deal for him, but I could live with a decent amount of dollars. He's been a real asset when healthy far more often than not.

Realistically, the max that I'd do is:

4 years at 19/20m , so around 4.5m-5m per at the MAX. I'm suggesting this purely due to the fact that his agents and Cally himself will want some form of raise. He's not in that age were he'll play for a lesser salary than his last contract. Taking all this into account, more of an ideal situation would be 18m at 4m-4.5m per.

If it's true that his agent will push for 7m, that's just lunacy.

I'm also a firm believer in "rewarding" your homegrown players, which is also the reason I'd like to see us keep Girardi. We also gotta keep in mind, how would it look if we let our captain walk.

He is a 3rd liner actually and has no clue how to play in AV's system.

He isnt an asset this year

On these boards, a player is only as good as they're playing at the moment, so the poll isn't surprising.

This contract isn't about money, it's about play style. If we're trying to turn the Rangers into the old Canucks, go ahead and trade him. There's no room in that system for a skilled grinder. It's setting a good player up to fail, and as far as being captain goes, puts his playstyle at odds with the rest of the team. See what Colorado would be willing to part with; team with alot of young talent, and Cally on a line with Lando or RoR sounds extremely appealing.

If we want to keep any trace of the best rangers team in nearly 20 years, you have to keep Callahan. He won the C on his jersey with heart and soul, taking the body and giving his up. Timely goals, non-stop effort, and insipiring play are all his calling card. If you want to keep that, you need to change the firepower on this team to more Cally/Stepan/Hags types. Players who get in deep, work below the circles, and gut out goals.

I think we should keep him, and try to adapt a more western style of play. Puck possession is a tough game to play, and we're not the Pens. I don't want to see them play like the Pens. I hate Pittsburgh.

Get younger. Get tougher. Get hungry. Keep the core, compliment them with youth. The energy is infectious, and a Callahan on his game is a true impact player.
