This is an evaluation of the players as much as it is DJ. They went to bat for DJ. Then Staois and Alfie spoke with team. I think he gave DJ and the team time to prove it. Next summer is going to be huge.

Surely, he's done now. Right? Like this DJ experiment of an experience needs to conclude, we could still salvage this season, odds aren't great, but it's still possible with a strong minded coach who can bring the best out of everyone.

But whoever it is, the next game it can't be DJ

This team would get destroyed by the 2020 Covid Sens.

I’ll be surprised if nothing is done before next game on Friday.
Don’t think you can not respond to this. It sends the wrong losing message to the players etc.

Steve Llyod on the Morning show "I'll be honest here, I'll be surprised if DJ Smith is coaching the team by the end of the day. I am not wishing for it, I am just saying."

Steve is usually more reserved when it comes to these things, and he usually doesn't put stuff out like that unless he has some info or some go ahead, as he's usually the top dog in towing the company line for the sens on radio.

Interesting stat from a reddit comment:

DJ Smith ranks 219th all time out of 394 coaches in win points percentage.

Dean Evason ranks 21st

Jay Woodcroft ranks 18th

For past games? Yes.

For future games? Advanced stats are a better predictor of future games than wins/loses.
You don't need advanced stats to see where and how this team is trending. They were trash in the last 3 wins played against teams in dissaray. Followed by 2 absolute stinkers. No puck support, no commitment to doing the right thing in danger areas. Absolutely no consequences for selfish plays. These guys do things you never see the ice again on any level of high end organized hockey and they get thrown right back out there. Some of the most selfish NHL hockey I've ever watched.

Jay Woodcroft had even more selfish less organized play than Ottawa. That's a bad stat to represent how good a coach is. He had a top 5 roster in talent in the league.

Evason on the other hand did alot with not much. That team has buy in and compete. They just lack talent because they have 15 million tied up in buy outs.

I'd take evason here in Ottawa for sure. Want woodcroft no where near this team.

DJ and the entire coaching staff should be gone. Presser by noon today please.

Yeah he tows the company line. That's why he survived the recent purge. I honestly can't stand his holier than thou approach but I will give him credit he actually knows what he is looking at when he watches the game. Unlike Dean and Gord who are utterly clueless at breaking down the sport.

Just DJ isn't enough they gotta clean house. If they promote Capuano it's even worse. I'd sooner see him get replaced than he replace DJ.

I agree with you. Evason has created a system that allowed goalies to go there and thrive. Which is the complete opposite of what DJ has done here.

Some people (***) are their own worst enemies. They cling to a belief and false hope in spite just looking at the big picture and what is obvious. It's particularly amusing when they double down and chastise others thinking they are sharpest knives in the drawer.

So, how effective could a coaching change be.

Hartsburg had a .427 pts%, Clouston came in mid season and finished the year with a .618% and followed that up with a .573 the next year.

When MacLean took over after Clouston lost the room posting a .451 pts%, the team responding with. a .561 pts%, granted that was an offseason change.

Similarly, Boucher put up a .598 pts % his first year after Cameron put up .518. again, this was with an offseason to make adjustments.

Even Boucher to Crawford resulted in a bump from .383 to .417 in a midseason coaching change, and that's with the associate coach taking over.

DJ may not have lost the room in the traditional sense that they just don't want to play for him, but the message isn't getting the right results. I think even if we maintain DJs system, significant improvement can be had by shaking things up with a new voice at the helm, because right now the execution isn't there, so whether they are playing a 1-3-1 LW lock or 2-1-2 spread, it doesn't really matter, it won't work unless everyone is pulling the same direction.

It's time, DJ did weel to keep the room positive during the rebuild and I do think that was important, but now is the time for results. He was given more than a fair shake,

Practice is at 10:30 today. If DJ was getting fired would you not think it would have been done by now ?

11:30 I believe.

Still holding out hope that I get that Twitter announcement notification in the next hour or so

Even Bruce is jumping on the bandwaggon.

"This was embarrassing, disappointing and left many wondering how long can this keep going on?"

"The Senators didn’t get off to a very good start, they didn’t have any finish and the heat has been turned up on high on head coach D.J. Smith after the club’s worst performance of the season."

"With general manager Pierre Dorion fired to start the month by new owner Michael Andlauer, you have to wonder how much racetrack Smith and his coaching staff have left because this wasn’t what anybody expected and results like Monday night won’t help their future."

This team is one of the most skilled on paper we've had in a long time, yet one of the most mentally fragile.
Year in and year out, ever since DJ has been coach, it's the exact same narrative. They shit the bed in spectacular fashion to start then ope! No more pressure! Look how amazing they are! Somethings gotta change.
