How much rope does DJ Smith have? [UPDATE: None]

Just as Andlauer had a previous relationship with Steve Staios, and hired him because of it…… a New GM will want to hire a coach he too has had a previous relationship with…. Sure he will have to “sell” his choice to the POHO, but more than likely he will hire someone he wants.
 
DJ will be playing beats all year long. He is not getting fired this year, IMO. So let's take down this thread and bring it back in the spring.

If Andlauer (Staios) was going to make a coaching change it would have been done by now.

Also a 7-7 record is much better than last year at this time. Staios decided not to fire DJ and now there is continued progress from last year.

Also Korpisalo hire by PD looks good now.

In Sweden, the Sens have secured 4 of 4 points, and enough Rope to have DJS hand around for a while longer.

I dont agree. They need a way bigger sample size of watching this team and understanding how and why it ticks. Then they gotta figure out what type of coach they need.

That being said I think this is the time to do it now. I think a 15 game sample size is enough and watching the mistakes this team and its specific players typically make you start to see its maturity and its habits. 6 days off gives a new coach time to tweak the systems and start establishing its presence before the next game.

I can see the need for change to take this team to another level. 15 games is a small sample size but it is the time of year we would always go bust in. Right now we are above 0.500.

I agree that a new coach would give the team somewhat of a boost (I call it new coach syndrome). I just think the reality may be that it is really hard to seek out a talented new coach when there is no one in the organization with that current skill set (no GM). And even if you have a good GM it would take time to identify a talented coach.

I think it is a bigger gamble for ownership/management to hire a new coach now and then fire him in the spring if it doesn't work out. It would be a bad start for the new fresh team. If it didn't work out people would go crazy over having axed DJ just as we were on a win streak in November.

Come on Bert. We just put 4 points in the bank in Sweden. Rightly or wrongly, he's not getting canned when he steps off the plane.

Well there is no better time than a big break and they arent buying in. Its quite clear, they are lucky to have been playing 3 teams that are aweful at the moment. I like DJ but its just delaying the inevitable. The message isnt getting there. The best line was the 4th line, Zub, JBD and Brannstrom in a very important game.

Great time to get a real coach in here, only slot we have to get some real practises in.

You never know which team is gonna show up on any given night under DJ, it’s the same mess for 5 seasons. Our special teams has been strange this year too

Make the change now if you can get your guy, if not I’d keep Alfie on the bench at least

DeBrincat had a positive impact on puck movement once the puck got settled down. They're missing that.

Whoa there buddy…. Let’s get a new GM first, and then go from there.

It would be idiotic to can DJS at the airport tomorrow, and that is why it is not going to happen.

The Sens are one game over .500, and are sitting at just about a 55% chance of making the playoffs.

No one is saying DJS is the best coach available, but 15 games is no where near enough for a team sitting at 8 wins and 7 losses, to make a coaching change when there is a vacancy in the GMs office To fill first.

So some of those who want to cut ties with DJS minutes after they return to Ottawa need to cool their jets…. Wait to see how the rest of the month unfolds, and what happens with the GM search.
