Just looking at some numbers on MoneyPuck.

I found these interesting

High Danger Shots For Ottawa is 30th in the league.
High Danger Shots Against Ottawa is 23rd in the league . We are a little worse on the offensive side , generating high danger shots than preventing them.
Defensive Zone Giveaways Ottawa has the 9th most; 59.41% of our Giveaways are in the defensive zone ( 12th Highest)
Rebound Shots Against Ottawa has the 6th most
Rebound Shots For Ottawa is 27th in the league
Unblocked Shot attempts for Ottawa is 23rd in the league
Unblocked Shot attempts against Ottawa is also 23rd in the league

Liked the willingness to change the lines up and the PP to find some new combinations. Joseph with Stu and G, Tank with Norris and Chucky, and Bath on the 3rd line.

Still loath the collapse and leave the points totally open style, but it looks a bit better when the defense can make decent outlets and not rim it to nobody.

You're the one who wants this organization to keep losing.

Get over it. The Melnyk days are over. Andlauer and Staios know how to run an organization. They'll do this properly. They'll find a GM first, then allow him to select his coach.

The knee jerk reaction stuff you're proposing is over. We don't do that anymore.
Look at Woodcrofts total record during his time in Edmonton compared to DJ’s in Ottawa.

Woodcroft: 77-38-13
Smith: 126-146-32

Guess which one got fired

Those stats seem to align quite well with our place in the standings.

Latest from Garrioche:

Smith and his staff are pushing all the right buttons to help get this team on track.”

Yep, with team in last place in the East and bottom 5 in the NHL - D.J. Is pushing all the right buttons as usual.
Garrioch is a real gem, isn't he?

How is this relevant to the fact that we don't have a GM right now to hire a coach?

We don't want a Boudreau in Vancouver situation on our hands.

At some point you have to put a guy out of his misery and that's what I see with the Woodcroft firing in Edmonton. They're cooked. It's too late to turn their season around and he wouldn't be brought back next year, so cut the cord and move on. It's harder to say that about DJ when they're 6-7, had significant injuries, and expectations weren't nearly as high. That said, I see almost no chance DJ is back next season either so maybe that part could apply and I suspect if things really go south like they did in Edmonton, we will see DJ be relieved of his duties as well. Don't blame Staios for not rushing into it though.

We literally had the same GM for 8 years and coach for 5

Stability isn’t the issue

I also don’t get this accountability talk, DJ developed the players… it’s not about him holding them accountable it’s his inability to implement defensive play. He literally does not have the coaching abilities to get results

Fire DJ now, we have the talent. Watching games live it’s even more clear we have talent, and a terrible coach.

I know Staios isn’t super experienced, but start cranking up those interviews and pick your guy. DJ ain’t it

If you think that by changing coach this team will transformed into a playoff caliber team you are fooling yourselves. This team is way to soft, they only care about their own personal stats. The next coach has a lot of work to do before those guys are ready to compete for a playoff spots.

Yes but are the Oilers better today then yesterday??? So what happens to Knoblauch if Edmonton misses the playoffs?? Do Edmonton hire another coach during the off season?? At what point do we stop blaming the coach and start blaming the players for not being able to execute on the ice???

I mean probably after more than 1 coach.

The crux of the core has had 1 coach their entire careers. Maybe give them another coach at most 2?

You’re right. Theres no point in doing anything ever.

This core has only played for a coach who’s done nothing in his pro career other than be the defensive coach for the 2015-2019 Leafs (defensive powerhouses!) and lose with the Sens, but yeah there’s no way there’s untapped potential here. Just fold the franchise.

I think he's saying that it will take time. There are problems to fix. The players will have to forget the bad and learn new things to add to their good hockey base. In Boston Julien set a foundation, Cassidy and now Monty have added to it. That's part of why they keep rolling along every year. The coaching situation mirrors the management side in Ottawa. Andlauer and Staios are doing a lot of work to unfck a decade of neglect in the offices. The same thing is probably going to be true on the ice for a new coaching staff to fix. A new coach is needed, but it will take time to see results.

That is the problem with development. Developing players by definition means personal growth. They were trying to make NHLers out of prospects. So all the focus is inwards. Which is normal for development.
But now we need to start seeing dividends from all this development and the players seem to still be inwardly focused.

The longer we wait, the longer it will take to get results.

We're not accomplishing anything with DJ at the helm, rip off the bandaid, let the new coach start this year to give the players time, and they continue building on it into next year. If we wait much longer, then next year becomes the transition year.

It appears the owner wants to win soon in Edmonton.

I agree. Staios is still early in his POHO assignment and the "honeymoon" phase is still in place. Plus hiring a new GM and new coaching staff is best done in the off season when more candidates are available.
