remembered the old days when edler was just so young and raw. and had potential. compared him to a young ohlund/lidstrom. phsysicality heavy shot. but missed the majority of the time. now with serious injuries i.e back and broken leg. its different for him. hes a number 2 or 3 on a good team.

Whats declined is his offensive ability. He apparently went to the Jiri Slegr school of shooting a couple years back and can no longer hit the net to save his life.

Eh, least of our problems. He's still an extremely good #3 d-man on any team. Unfortunately forced to play #1 minutes on a **** team.

There needs to be a thread on "how much has Hutton declined". I know hes young and its his second year but hes been complete ass this year. By far our worst dman sometimes. We cant just be lenient and forgetful just because hes young and hes our first drafted dman to make the team since like Edler.

Edler still solid defensively but the offense has totally dried up....wondering about how his surgically-repaired back is holding up....but then the game has changed in recent years....point-shots no longer getting through to the net, and he never was an Erik Karlsson type....everybody talking about trading Tanev....but if Edler were to waive his NTC, he'd be the more logical guy to deal at this point.

His offense has "dried up" because he no longer plays ungodly amounts of pp time. He has scored exactly 3 goals at even strength almost every year. Tanev "the black hole" has out produced him at even strength every season they have played together. He is simply not a good offensive player but the last couple season he led our team in pp time by like a hundred minutes and was able to put up some points in that situation.

Should've traded him a few years ago, just another wasted asset that could've helped the future.

They asked him to waive his NTC if I remember....or asked if he would. And he said no.

But that was then, this is now. This team is a train-wreck right now and will be for some time...at 30, maybe he's more interested in winning right now...no doubt he'd be a significant 'add' for some team at the deadline. But Jimbo has the uncanny habit of turning a silk purse into a sow's ear....Canucks desperately need a first-rounder and a prospect or two coming back.

Edler is stubborn as a mule. He's not going to waive his NTC no matter how much Benning tries to hurt his feelings. Apparently he is quite settled in and doesn't want to go anywhere.

He's easily the least of our problems on defense right now. Watch the games where we were missing Edler, he is basically the lynchpin of our defense (which isn't saying much) but without him it's beyond comically bad. Didn't he throw a huge hit last night too? Or was that the game before?

Yeah. I wouldn't say he's really "declined" at this point, so much as he's just...morphed into something a bit different than expected.

The offensive side of his game never really went anywhere and sort of dried up when the mirage of that high flying team no longer padded his stats to the same degree. The physicality has waned as well. But he's become a much steadier presence overall.

At this point, he's still a quality Top-3 Defenceman. A guy who is either a solid complement to a 1st pairing, or a guy who could anchor a very good 2nd pairing on a deeper team. Even the offensive results would likely come back somewhat if he were to find himself on a more talented and deeper team again. But right now, he's being asked to masquerade as true #1D, which he's not...and never has been.

Exactly my thoughts on Edler.

Also for those complaining about Edler's ability to hit the net, he's consistently been a top-30 dman in the league in terms of sog. Since 2014, he's 28th among dmen in sog despite missing more games than anyone else in the top-50 except EJ (#31) and Wideman (#48). He's not perfect but he's still among the best in the league in terms of getting shots on net.

Enough to somehow have zero assists through 17 games averaging 25min a game and getting PP time.

Its hard to believe that is even possible. Should of traded him a long time ago when the Wings were looking at him hard. They had an absolute bevy of young forward talent, that is now the new core of the Wings.

He has not really declined in as much as he never ascended to the level of player we thought he might become.

His offensive game, physicality and agility has declined, but his defensive game and positioning is definitely better than it was before his back issues/suspensions.

He hasn't declined tho he never lived up to his hype (or at least if you bought into how highly he was hyped up). Part of that was due to constant back injuries, which probably affected his development.

Overall he's still a solid top 4 dman and could be a decent top pairing with the right partner. He isn't going to carry an elite pairing but he has the ability to be part of a solid #1 pairing.

I'm in agreement with the people saying Edler hasn't declined, his game has just changed. He was a beneficiary of a high-scoring team earlier in his career and that inflated his offensive numbers a bit. Edler's game in 2016 is becoming quite similar to late-era Mattias Ohlund.

He's the sort of guy I would have liked to see the Canucks trade - see username - so he could get a legitimate chance at a Cup, but he seems to enjoy Vancouver enough not to care about that. As Canucks fans, we take Edler for granted. This guy wants to be here.

His game has actually improved, but his inconsistency is creeping back in this year. Feels like he always plays his worst hockey when the team plays awful. Even more-so than other players-- remember the way he played when the Torterella team nose-dived?

Hopefully management brings in a guy like Hartley to get rid of the tenure mentality around this team.

Edlers decline over the next 5 years is going to be ugly. Sooner we can trade him and get value the better.
