Hi guys,

with all what happening in Canada with those restrictions, a lot of player clearly mentionned not wanting to go to go play for a canadian team, even some wife of players are starting to voice their displeasure...

So how much they will have to overpay if they want to get any interess from the players if there is any?

Keep the conversation civilize as most as possible

Guess we'll see what the restrictions are looking like in the next few months. I'm sure it's definitely impacted some players opinions. There's only so much room and cap space available for guys to be demanding more to be playing in Canada.

I think it will be one factor added to the list of factors FAs concern (how close am I to my family, how much do I trust the organization, what is my role) but at the end of the day money talks. I think the challenge will be with the near veteran min guys, is an extra 100k worth it? How about 250k? You could be looking at 25% premium minimum to get one of those guys.

I was thinking about 25% but that will take off so premium player to go north... it will be a rought 2-3 years for canadian teams imo

You’ll always have the good Canadian boys who want to play there, and lower-profile players who sign there out of necessity—but for your average free agent with a handful of interested teams? I’d imagine the Canadian clubs will be swept to the bottom of the list.

i almost agree with this but for the average free agent they will have to weigh playing time/potential production for future contract.

For the above average/'star' players i fully agree with your last sentence though

Canadian teams always seem to have to pay more for FAs to offset the higher taxes, especially in Montreal. The Habs shouldn’t be in the market for any UFAs at this time unless they decide to retool instead of rebuilding. It’s unfortunate that the restrictions may also affect some signings.

Might also affect american NCAA pllayer don't wanting to sign like Jordan Harris...

Oilers should be in the market for a longer term goalie but doubt it comes via UFA. It would more likely be via a trade.
Other than that, Holland would have no cap space to dip into free agent market for Oilers.

All things considered? About 32% more than Florida or Nashville.

If nothing change

Maybe…but it might have the OPPOSITE effect as well

Family-oriented players might want to play in Canada compared to how lax the US has been about restrictions/containing Covid

all in all I think it balances out tbh and we don’t see much of a diff either way

Restrictions are likely to be fairly loose by UFA day. After omicron running a muck for 6 months case counts should be down as likely everyone will have had it by then.

I don't think it will affect much at all. Players that won't come here will usually be the ones who only want to play in the US anyways.

With Omicron being highly likely to infect everyone anyways, it is time to start lowering restrictions.

There might be a little overpaying, but I feel like it's more likely a bunch of players simply won't sign north of the border.

So not so much overpayment, but it might be hard to get a specific guy a GM is looking for if he's just not interested.

Also we'll see where Canada's at by the summer. The landscape seems to be shifting here recently in terms of Covid restrictions.

Canada is, in general, not very attractive to most high-paid professional athletes. I actually think the current crisis could play in Canadian teams' favor.

I think it is likely that some players will want to be closer to home and their (extended) families. I know a few people who have definitely put their career ambitions on hold until this whole mess is sorted out.

If you are a Canadian player and married to a Canadian and have kids, it might make more sense right now to be closer to the support system, access to grand parents, etc...

There is still a large percentage of players in this league who are Canadian. I have no doubt many of them will be happy to sign contracts with Canadian teams.
