How Much Better is this Team with Berube New Personnel

I don't know if they are tbh or if it's just goaltending masking the issues that are still there.

3rd coach
3rd gm
10+ goalies

Same result so far in the season, another good, not great, not awful season.

Hmmm WHAT COULD IT BE??? Lol
Berube was hired to put square pegs in round holes
Not sure what else to say

Taking a penalty is an automatic goal against for this group. I don’t know what the hell is going on with it. Easy answer is to blame Lambert and his scheme, but I think the personnel wears a lot of this too. The PK has been on a decline since 2021-22.

21-22 82.1% 8th ranked
22-23 81.9% 12th ranked
23-24 76.9% 23rd ranked
24-25 78% (and dropping fast) 16th ranked

They need to turn the penalty kill around and fast. Since December 21, half a season worth of games so far (33), we have a 29th ranked PK clicking at 71.1%. That’s unacceptable.

Savard happened. Nobody will fire people or hold anyone accountable in Toronto. Don't rock the boat or the gravy train stops

PK has been 3rd in the league since Jan 6th, that kinda illustrates just how bad they were from Game 1 till then.

EDIT I meant to say PP was 3rd in the league.

We are now 16th on the PK and 19th on the PP. I didn't know we were 6th since Jan6. That's a lot better. Wonder what it is the past 10 games.

I think he has it backward.

I believe their PK has been the third worst since Jan 6th. If it's middle of the pack overall, that suggests it was pretty good before that.

There isn't much to get excited about. The PK sucks, the PP still isn't great and continues to fail at key times, the team gets outplayed five on five and isn't very good six on five anymore (I think there were a lot of late game tying goals last year).

Our problem has always been scoring goals in the playoffs so we got a coach who neutered our offense. If the teams unsustainable goaltending didn't prop them up would they even be in a playoff spot?

I thought they said Saturday night since Jan 3rd we were 3rd in PP and 30th in PK? TBH I kinda tuned the game out at a certain point, I could have that wrong I was not really paying close attention.

Over the last 4 seasons starting in 2021-22, going in order to the current season:
-3rd in conference, 4th in conference, 5th in conference, 5th in conference (currently)
-115 points, 111 points, 102 points, 101 point (pace)
- +62 goal differential, +57, +40, +16 (pace)

Since fully coming back from the lockout and playing full 82 game seasons, the team has slightly slid every single year in each of those categories.

Yet I feel the same way this year I have every year....the Leafs have a slight chance to win the cup, it will take luck, but it still is possible if injuries and 'puck luck' go their way.

Don't know how much is on Berube and how much is on this core. On one hand, the analytics for this team under Craig are horrific. Our offence has wilted and our defence has not been good enough to make up for it. The team looks like chicken's with their heads cut off out there. Doesn't seem there's any real gameplan, and if there is the team isn't following it.

On the other hand, this core has had teams with strong underlying metrics in years past and they still accomplished jack-shit. Plus as outlined by mjd above, the team has been declining over the past 4 seasons in a lot of categories. Is this the result of the core getting old, or terrible GMing and Coaching from Treliving and Berube?

I don't want to really let the core off the hook. No matter the analytics or the supporting cast around them, they've failed time and time again. Berube may just be next in a long line of scapegoats that allow the Core Five players to avoid accountability.

The personnel on this team leads me to believe the Leafs should be performing much better than they have been. Are the poor metrics a result of Berube's system not matching with the players on the roster or is it on the players who on some level reject Berube's gameplan and don't execute it?

Berube was hired because he was the biggest name, it is what Treliving does, he signs whoever has the most hype.

Reaves, OEL, Domi, Bertuzzi, Tanev, Pacioretty, Klingberg, and I am sure there is more...

If someone was good 5 years ago or is tough, Treliving wants him.

Well, as I feared, the Leafs' inability to possess the puck really ended up biting them in the ass.

It's good to be able to defend in your own end and all that, but all season long (or at least since like December), the Leafs spent a lot of playing time in their own zone and had difficulty controlling the puck in the other team's end.

It's one thing to play a defensive shell type of game against an inexperienced playoff team like OTT, but it's hard to beat a heavy, aggressive and skilled team like FLA if you let them keep controlling the puck in your zone and spend very little time in the attacking zone and pressuring and punishing their defensemen. They were able to limit chances against in Game Six but not in Games Five and Seven.

Going to have to make some personnel changes and tweak the system/style of play next year to have a better shot against the Floridas of the League.

Turns out that they were better by a round. Good enough? Well...

I think they would have beaten OTT under Keefe (maybe more comfortably, TBH).

The hope was they would do better against teams like BOS and FLA.

I think BOS is basically done, but they're going to have to make some improvements to do better against FLA.

Sucks being right, but Berube was part of the problem himself

Yeah he's a fighter, tough guy bla bla bla, but there is such a thing as MORAL courage and it's very obvious he was muzzled like Keefe. BUT, he chose not to fight the muzzle and say what we're all thinking.

Deja vu anyone?????

“Our best people have not found their rhythm,” Keefe said in his post-game comments. “The difference between us and Arizona is that we have elite players. Our elite players didn’t play like elite players today and couldn’t make a difference.”

Oh and Mitch's response is hilarious:

But Marner was upset enough that he asked for a sit-down with Keefe. “I talked to him today,” said Marner. “He explained what he meant to say and how it came out, and everything like that. We’ll leave it at that. … We have closed doors here for a reason.”

This is Berube today:

“I used some of the wrong words to try and describe what I was trying to,” he said.

I can't pine for Keefe and the past because he had his chances here. I can only put so much stock in the numbers as well since the team did stretch this series to the full seven games. Losing as they did in a game like tonight will also wreak havoc on any outlook in that regard (which obviously has its justification). Berube's only been Leaf coach for a season, and there will be changes to come with player personnel. We'll see what the future brings.

I mean objectively they had the best season they have had in 23 years that's an objective fact.

They need A LOT of changes up front
