After games of 4/22/13:

Kings can finish no lower than 6th, no higher than 4th -- the three Division champions are all locked at this point.

If the Kings go 1-1-1, they're projected to hold on to 4th -- San Jose projects to 59 points.

And here's something -- even if the Kings lose tonight and tomorrow, they will STILL be able to guarantee a better seed than the Sharks if they beat them in regulation time on Saturday. Their overall magic number for 4th is four points, but that's two ways -- St. Louis is still in the picture for that race, so the Kings need four points relative to San Jose _and_ four points relative to St. Louis.

So, I guess the simplest path is just win tonight and tomorrow -- that clinches 4th no matter what.

On a side note, the 1993 Cup Finals run is what made me into a hockey fan (specifically the OT of Game Six of the Campbell Conference Finals against Toronto)... so I have NEVER experienced the Kings having home ice.

The last time the Kings had home ice, I was studying for a Grade 9 exam.

Ok, I wasn't studying, but I was in Grade 9

With St Louis we only need 3 points to beat them for 4th place.
And the simplest path would be to win tonight and have Dallas beat SJ and Col to beat STL. Then the last 2 games become a moot point.
But I think that is really kind of hoping for too much.

The last time we won a series which we started with home ice advantage was 1991, against the Vancouver Canucks, in the opening round, 4-2. We lost the following series, which we also had home ice, to the Edmonton Oilers 4-2. That series featured four overtimes, including a double OT game, with Edmonton taking three of the four OT games.

We then lost the following year in round one to Edmonton again 4-2, again with home ice advantage to start the series.

So yeah, since we don't have to worry about Edmonton this year we should be ok,

Sad to think it's been 22 years since we won a series with home ice advantage. Since then we've played 17 playoff series, the last 15 straight without home ice advantage. Yeah, we're due to start a series at home.

Kings need three points to clinch over St. Louis, and four points to clinch over San Jose. They can clinch 5th tonight if they win and if the Sharks lose in regulation. Since the Blues do not play today, the Kings cannot clinch the 4 spot until at least tomorrow.

Phoenix would be eliminated from the post-season with a regulation loss against the Sharks tonight, so they'll be motivated.

And to answer the thread's original question, it's continuing to look like 54 points will have done it.
