I’m an Islander fan coming in peace to see if there’s a realistic trade for Dobson. Would Eklund or Smith be available in a trade for him. I know you guys could use a stud young RHD and you’ll probably draft a forward to replace whoever you trade anyways. If not, no harm no foul and we’ll all just move on

We've been talking about Dobson a fair bit, but I think any prospect/young core trade starts below the Eklund/Smith line. Some of our fanbase would be fine with Dickinson as the centerpiece and probably some would not. More would probably be fine with Musty + the DAL 1st we just got as the centerpiece.

There's been some discussion as to whether Dobson is good enough defensively / right attitude to add to the core that Grier is trying to build. Hopefully this is a fun discussion, I'm interested to see where it leads.

I’d be interested but definitely not for Smith and probably not for Eklund. I’d be open to considering the Dallas 1st + maybe Haltunnen or Bystedt…

I like the idea of Dobson but from what I understand his defense is pretty bad and while a Dobson - Dickinson pair sounds kind of awesome for the future, I’m not sure he’s exactly the guy I’d be targeting right now? Maybe! Just yeah, not at the price of one of our big future pieces.

Absolutely not, sorry.

There is a world where a Dobson to the Sharks trade can be finagled, but the moment Lou says "Smith" or "Eklund", the call ends.

Yea understandable, I probably wouldn’t do Dobson for that package but I guess you could add Dickinson to the group that ‘d trade him for as the guy above said. The main idea was to trade for a young nhler similar to Dobson cause we’re in no rush to trade him. I think for Dobson it’s necessary for there to be a top end quality piece, which is obviously not gonna be you’re first, so it’s gotta be a top prospect and personally I’d only take those 3 as the main piece.
As far as Dobson’s defense, he definitely has his moments of stupidity, but almost all the analytics say he’s both our best offensive and defensive defenseman. Now I wouldn’t go that far at all but I wouldn’t say he’s a liability, he’s probably a net even on defense with a huge offensive ceiling.

I dunno...Eklund is only about 2.5 years younger than Dobson and is just about the easiest type of player to acquire on the open market (non-elite small skilled winger) while Dobson is the most rare.

It depends on the other pieces involved and whether Dobson would immediately sign a max term extension with the Sharks but Eklund should be in play for a trade like this. Let's say we draft Hagens with our 1st and trade the Dallas 1st, Eklund and Mukhamadullin for Dobson. Aren't we coming out ahead?

Yeah probably just bad timing to do a trade for Dobson really, if we were a little further into the rebuild and thought we had some prospects to replace a contributing member of the team like Eklund I think it would be doable, but right now he is just too important to the team, and our prospects not in the NHL have not proven to be ready to replace a guy like Eklund.

Came here to say the same thing: Musty and the Dallas first makes sense.

Dobson needs to improve defensively, but I trust the same coach who turned around Gustav Forsling to turn around Noah Dobson. (Warsofsky)
