How many points will it take to make the playoffs? (2017-18 edition)

I blame the NHL's silly points system. Of course both teams are gonna play for a tie now, since they can still win all points to be won tonight in the OT or shootout lottery. It would be very different if 3 points were awarded for regulation wins – meaning a tie after regulation would lose a point for you, which neither of these teams can afford.

We're at ~91% chance to get in right now. Win and we could be as high as a 99%. A point keeps as at around ~89. Lose in regulation and it could drop all the way down to 75%.

Looking like it may take 97 points to get in to the playoffs. Interesting season in the West.

Kings clinch a spot with 1 point or if the Avs don't win both their remaining games or if I'm reading this correctly, a St. Louis regulation loss (or two St. Louis OTL).

Kings hold the tie-breakers with both the Avs and Blues.

Edit: Derp. Blues stuff was discussed already in the GDT.

Avs would have to win vs. SJ and beat St. Louis in OT/SO.

St. Louis would have to beat Chicago twice and lose in OT/SO to Colorado.

The Kings probably have a better chance of catching SJ for 2nd in the Pacific than they do of missing the playoffs. If SJ were to somehow lose to Dallas tomorrow things could get a bit interesting...

The target is definitely 97 points because it's possible to get eliminated with 96 points (with both Blues and Avs at 97 points). Unlikely to happen, but it's possible.

As best I can figure, here is what I see as having to happen to not get in.

Ducks: 1-2 (or better, likely)
Blues: 2-0-1
Avs: 2-0
Kings: 0-2

Obviously the Blues OTL would have to be to the Avs.

Yeah. It's unlikely, but that possibility still exists. It's useful that that Blues @ Avs game starts at 6 pm on Saturday, and the Kings game against the Stars at 7:30 pm, so the Blues & Avs can't play so the result of that game fits both teams.

In any case, the Kings control their destiny and will have the final word on who's moving on to the play-offs. One point from that game against the Stars will be enough, should they somehow manage to lose to the Wild on Thursday.

I’m actually concerned now that the Ducks and Kings could both win out and a Sharks regulation loss to either Colorado or Minnesota would have us starting the playoffs in the road at Anaheim.

Kind of hope the Kings and Avs both lose tomorrow.

1. Get a point against the Wild tomorrow.
2. Rest everyone against Dallas.
3. Enjoy WC1.
