McDavid has 43 ES points...Matthews has 41 in 4 fewer games

the difference between the two players is powerplay production.

that's not taking anything away from McDavid's ability with the extra man, just saying.

I'd like to see them re-think how they use our guys on the powerplay tbh. Not just because it's been lousy for a while now, but clearly the play should be running through two players, Mitch and Auston, but all too often, we burn off long stretches of powerplays with Matthews either getting no touches or just bumping the puck back to Rielly.

He does have 8 goals, 15 pts in 8 games vs Ottawa. Not to take anything away from him, but he does love to feast on the sens

Well my post was prior to last night but fair enough. I'd be curious to see McDrai's totals in their 9 games vs. Ottawa. Seems like each had at least two 4 pint games against Ottawa.

Edit: ridiculous:

Draisaitl: 9GP, 10G,, 11A, 21P
McDavid: 9GP, 4G, 17A, 21 P

Matthews: 8GP, 9G, 7A, 16P
Marner: 8GP, 3G, 11A, 14P
Thornton: 8GP, 3G, 5A, 8P

I posted this over on the mainboards rocket thread, but likely many of you (and rightfully so) avoid main boards, it's equally relevant here:

Having a rocket is a nice legacy and honour, would be happy for him to win it.

But anyone who understands that players score lots more goals on the power play than they do 5v5 should understand that Matthews has been the best goal scorer in the league since his rookie season, and rockets are just a matter of time pending game management and injuries. Even if Matthews wins it this year, there is a better case to make that Ovi is better than Matthews right now than there was, say, 2-3 years ago.

Definitely players that have rockets, important game winning goals, Stanley cups, will have greater goal scoring legacies. But Matthews is without question a generational goal scorer, and hopefully for Leafs fans he creates a legacy.

As far as the Rocket race, Rantanen mathematically should be the closest challenge to Matthews as he is on pace to score 9 more goals. That would put him at 32. McDavid is on pace for 31. Matthews has 31 right now.

So it is conceivable, though let's pray it doesn't happen, that Matthews could finish with the most goals if he doesn't score again this year. To weigh in on the original question, I say he comes in at 39 and wins it by 6 over McDavid.

At this point, with 15 games left, I can't see Matthews scoring less than 9 more goals. Obviously assuming of course he plays every game.

He's at 33 goals so far.

How many more do we think he'll need to secure this years rocket trophy, 3 or 4 more goals?

Rantanen is on pace for only 33. Matthews already is at 33.

I would say 36-37 goals would lock it. Rantanen and the field would need to score at a near goal per game pace or just under that pace for Rantanen to hit 37.

Marchand is a dark horse there - Boston plays Buffalo like 7 of their last 15 games.

At most. Ovechkin missed four games so he only has ten left and I doubt McDavid scores 10+ goals the rest of the way. Rantanen is the closest thing to a threat.

If Matthews can have 2-3 games of multiple goals in the remaining 15 games there is no reason that he cannot get 45 goals for sure. Depending on the streak he goes on and the PP, this could be more. We have see sets of 10 games where he is scoring 12 goals during that stretch.

Im going to say he falls short of 50 with 46 goals to end the season.

There's only 11 games left. He'll get 7-11 goals is my guess.

He’s pacing for 42 and i picked 43. 45 might be doable for him the way he is going. Would like a couple from him in tonight’s game
