How many double digit cap hits (in millions) does it take to win with?

Its all about % of the cap and given where it is, a team should aim for 1 and the leafs have exactly one player that deserve 1, Matthews. Given they signed Tavares, they have to cut corners capwise in other areas of the team. But having Tavares and Matthews covering 28% of the cap is completely doable with some foresight and creativity, which this management team lacks.

I mean, Matthews likely ends up a first ballot hall of famer as well…

Ok so even if he is as good as Malkin which he isn’t, who is covering Crosby? Tavares or Marner?

Another really understated part of all of this is that the Leafs could have locked Matthews and Marner 1 year before their ELC contracts expired and they didn’t. Crosby (twice), Malkin, McDavid and now Point ( not coming off an ELC) all signed a year in advance of their next contract. Is that an indictment on management or is it something deeper? Maybe players don’t want to lock in playing in Toronto unless it is for a premium?

We probably have one too many, but more importantly we aren't getting full value for our dollar in the playoffs. Tampa just won with Kucherov & Vasilevskiy at 9.5, and Pittsburgh won with Crosby & Malkin at 8.7 & 9.5 when the cap was ten million lower, so i don't think the double digit aspect is any more than a coincidence. The problem is primarily the performance, with the amount of double digit deals being a secondary concern. At this point I don't know how you can walk back paying guys for future performance, the disincentivization has already occurred. Maybe the trade route could solve it, but I think management has soiled themselves to the point where there will always be a skidmark leftover.
