I think a lot of folks throwing around the bandwagon term seem to forget that prior to the 90s there wasn't much of a choice of your 'local' team to tout. I was a Kings fan prior to the Ducks being a twinkle in Disney's eye, and for most of us, the Sharks/Seals were a little too far to be 'local.' Most of us became fans of the game itself via the Kings.
For me, it started when I started swatting my soccer ball with a baseball bat on skates in 1990. My dad came outside and said, 'you know, they actually have a sport for that,' and the rest is history. I used to record every single game on the same VHS tape until it died, and I'd re-watch every game and try to learn from what I saw. Been hooked ever since, and was 'lucky' enough to get beat up on every weekend by the local kids that eventually went pro (Clarke, Gauthier, etc.), and now that I'm 33 and in semi-retirement from playing, it's nice to still be able to love the game through watching and coaching. I will say the weirdest thing is getting old enough to watch your idols retire and a new batch come through, mature, and get ready to retire again, haha. Such a strange feeling when the prospects are young enough to almost be my own kids.
Regardless, I've had the bandwagon term thrown at me repeatedly in the last few months, and I don't even care to respond anymore. I have a few decades of memories good and bad to share with those that know better, and I always find a good way to shut someone like that up is to ask them about their 3rd/4th liners and prospects
