How is Owen Beck allowed to join team Canada? (AKA what if Montreal had loaned Slafkovsky to Slovakia this week?)

It sure is a surprise to me that teams can add players all the way through to the quarterfinals, and maybe even later?

I understand you need an injured player to make a change, but through such an intense tournament, you're bound to have injured players anyway, even so slightly. So basically all the teams could be allowed to make changes at this point.

This sure opens one heck of a loophole. Montreal didn't want to release Slafkovsky for a full month (mid December to mid January) but to play 2 or 3 extremely meaningful games in a matter of 5 days, for exemple? In such a huge and important tournament? He would barely miss any NHL time at all, and would be able to play some extremely meaningful games that would give him the experience of a lifetime. Imagine they beat Canada yesterday with Slaf added to the lineup? That experience certainly is more valuable than a random January game in Nashville.

It would not surprise me at all that NHL teams start doing this, there is simply no downside to it at all for them.

He was on the roster since the start and attended training camp. This is a non issue. Teams keep players on their roster all the time "just in case". He was basically scratched up until now.

Seriously?

''Beck was cut from Canada's World Junior team earlier this month at selection camp.''

Plus, you're totally missing the point, since if we go by what you're saying, Slovakia could simply have kept Slafkovsky as an extra forward and ''scratched'' him like you said, while he pays in the NHL, and joins the team on January 2nd. Moot point.

Which is nothing new and is perfectly allowed by IIHF rules. Slovakia could have kept Slafkovsky the entire time, there are several roster spots you can keep open the entire tournament if you so choose. The main reason teams don't is travel, expenses, and time. I really fail to see how this is an issue, sure it slightly favours teams like Canada who have a lot of players to pick from as opposed to Austria, but all teams in the IIHF can do this.

Wait what, canada are adding players in the middle of playoffs? That is BS
It’s literally always been a rule. Most teams just won’t find it worth it to do so as they have to have players travel quite a ways to play non meaningful minutes.

Owen Beck played a whopping 37 seconds of hockey in that game. It’s a non story

It's not about Beck, it's about NHL teams going ''wait a minute...'' and loaning someone like Slafkovsky who would obviously be an impact player for his country, for 2-3 games during the finals, which would definitely defeat the purpose of the entire tournament

How was Slovakia allowed to replace the injured Honzek 2 games after the tournament started

How was Germany allowed to replace the injured Proske on December 30th

How was Switzerland allowed to replace the injured Baechler 2 games into the tournament

How was Latvia allowed to replace the injured Lazarenoks 2 games into the tournament

Probably has something to do with the rules allowing all 5 teams to do this.

OK guys, maybe I wasn't clear enough in the opening post, I don't give a F that it is allowed and that all the countries are doing it. The point of this thread is obviously to discuss the possible loophole of a country adding an impact player such as Slafkovsky, Edvinsson, Kasper, etc. later in the quarterfinals and semifinals, which would completely screw the balance of the tournament.

I swear some of you guys are ignoring the point of the thread on purpose... damn Samitis replaced Lazarenoks HOW COULD THIS BE??!??!?

As for NHL teams releasing players late this has also always been allowed as long as the IIHF team left a roster spot open. Boston sent Pastrnak late to the 2016 tournament on December 28th

The only change this year is that if you've filled up your roster and someone gets injured you can replace the injured player, whereas before the only way a player could be added is if you intentionally left the roster spot open for them.

If Slafkovsky was a possibility they would have just left the roster spot open as they could have done in the past, they're wouldn't risk needing a player to get hurt to do so.

Imagine the Czechs adding (a 19 yrs old) Pastrnak for their game tomorrow out of nowhere

NHL teams have never done this in the past so obviously my post is more hypothetical, but if the Habs had told Slovakia ''if you make it to the quarterfinals Slafkovsky will fly to Halifax and play'' they would have definitely left a spot open

There is nothing stopping NHL teams from doing this, which is kinda silly when you think about it

It hasn’t happened and it seems unlikely that it would happen. Maybe you’re just making a big deal out of nothing?

I guess it's possible, but your assertion that it throws off the competitive balance of the tournament is flawed because Slafkovsky really should have been there in the first place.

But to compare apples to apples, please consider the fact that we brought in Owen Beck and not Mason McTavish.

This is the dumbest premise for a thread.

1. Every team can do this. It's a rule.

2. So what? Affecting the "balance" of the tournament? Since when is this tournament ever balanced? Please let Austria know.

3. Again, who cares? If Slovakia could have called up Slaf as the injury replacement, they certainly would have. Montreal didn't let him go. If Sweden were allowed their guys, they would be there. What is the issue here?

You get 20 skater spots and 3 goalies, If you want to play with 19 skaters to leave a spot for for Slafkovsky I don't have an issue with that. It's essentially the same as him being there the whole time but being injured and unable to play until the QF. You don't get an extra player in the meantime.

The new rule just protects teams from injuries in the tournament. Teams won't do it to get an NHL player that they can have anyway the old way. It just ables you to still run a full roster when someone gets injured.

No NHL team has ever told a team we'll give you our player only for the knockout stage because they have their own priorities, but in the off chance they wanted to go that route it shouldn't be an issue, the player was eligible the entire time

Boston did it because they wanted Pastrnak there but wanted to wait until after the NHL Christmas freeze to ensure they didn't need him on their NHL team instead.

The rules are flawed and the loophole will be used one day. Don't you remember Florida trying to draft Ovechkin a year prior?

Adding a random 1st liner (Slafkovsky, or Edvinsson for exemple) during a quarterfinal should not be allowed. It has never happened, and it probably never will, but the rules in place still allow it which is silly.

The very fact a CHL 1st liner (Beck) was allowed to join the WJC at this stage is a farce. I don't care he plays 4th line on Canada, he's an elite player. He would be top-6 on any other team

Perhaps they simply never thought about it. If you're Montreal, you want him playing vs Nashville tonight or in that awesome game vs Canada last night?

Honestly, Slovakia probably wins the game last night with Slafkovsky in the lineup. Is no one seeing the issue this could cause there?

Actually, it would get us closer to the end goal, a best on best U20 tournament.

Slovakia would not be even close if we sent our other U20 eligible players that are in the national hockey league.

Ok so lets pretend Bedard got injured in the WHL mid November, and was out for 6 weeks. He's not fit to play in the round robin but is healthy for the playoffs. Canada leaves the roster spot open to add him if and when he's healthy. I assume you're ok with that? How is that any different that Slafkovsky being unable to play the round robin because he was otherwise occupied but was freed up to play the knockout round?

I understand your point but it's a bit different with an injured player. In your story Bedard would have obviously been around Team Canada the whole time in Halifax. He can't play anyway, so he would have been there trying to recover in time for the finals. If he had been healthy, he would have played with Canada, not Regina obviously,

In my hypothetical scenario, the player is still playing in the NHL, but gets loaned to WJC last minute.
