It sure is a surprise to me that teams can add players all the way through to the quarterfinals, and maybe even later?
I understand you need an injured player to make a change, but through such an intense tournament, you're bound to have injured players anyway, even so slightly. So basically all the teams could be allowed to make changes at this point.
This sure opens one heck of a loophole. Montreal didn't want to release Slafkovsky for a full month (mid December to mid January) but to play 2 or 3 extremely meaningful games in a matter of 5 days, for exemple? In such a huge and important tournament? He would barely miss any NHL time at all, and would be able to play some extremely meaningful games that would give him the experience of a lifetime. Imagine they beat Canada yesterday with Slaf added to the lineup? That experience certainly is more valuable than a random January game in Nashville.
It would not surprise me at all that NHL teams start doing this, there is simply no downside to it at all for them.
