How is basketball considered a real sport?

The biggest problem that I have with basketball is the fact that the game stops hundreds of times for free throws.

I find it strange how much hostility there is toward basketball among hockey fans. It's just an ordinary sport like any other. Moderately physical, decently fast paced, requires a fairly high level of coordination, requires a fair bit of teamwork. Hockey fans act like it's darts or something.

Aside from the blatantly veiled racism, it probably has something to do with the sports sharing nearly equal spots on the calendar in every way possible

Doesn't help the league has least parity if all major sports. Breaking news... Cavs and warriors in finals this season. No other team has a shot. Top driven garbage league.

Usually I'd be hesitant in swathing a large segment of any part of society with such an encompassing and definitive statement but this seems to jive with the inferiority complex some hockey fans (and others) have regarding Basketball.

It's hard to imagine this is a serious thread. I don't like pro basketball but those guys are amazing. I think the best athlete in the world, whoever he is, is a basketball player.

I actually could never get into basketball because I had sensitive skin and the ball would eat away at my fingertips. Has anyone had this problem?

Ten years ago the NBA introduced this new ball that was supposed to be easier to grip. The players hated it because the texture of the ball started making their fingers raw, and thus the NBA ditched the ball after half a season.

So yes, you are not alone.

In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent).

From 54-60 there were some really good posts. The OP is so sad. That's the same thing as saying that hockey is not a real sport, because the "freaks" in the NHL are too good at it. Some hockey fans are haters with an inferiority complex that is well deserved. Only 1.2% of the US watched the 2016 SCF and it's not one of the 5 most popular sports in the US. If you only used the Final Four to measure college basketball, hockey would not be one of the top 6 sports in the US. If you throw in "combat" sports such as the UFC and the WWE (I don't know or care if you consider it a sport or entertainment), hockey's popularity slides even farther down the rabbit hole.

What I find so interesting about basketball is that for such a popular mainstream sport it seems to have a novelty to it. From music being played during games to the fact that unlike most sports, it's creation is not only indisputable but able to specifically be traced to the very person who invented it.

It's really funny to think about. Naismith invented a game for the sole purpose of being an indoor game that children could play inside when it was too cold for baseball & soccer at the YMCA. He could've said, "alright everyone, we're playing indoor soccer" and it never would've existed

Which leads us to point 2 - It was a kids game! He definitely didn't account for the future population that would eventually grow to where you can have a league of 360 guys with an average height of 6'7'' or whatever it is. He made the game too easy for grown ass men of today. The hoop should be like 12-13 feet high. And he certainly didn't envision a high scoring game...the 1st recorded game was 5-1!

A "real sport" or "sport" for those of us who don't wish to create a "no true Scotsman fallacy" is any competition between multiple individuals where said individuals can legally impede the progression, whether that be movement or otherwise, of their opponents.

This is why golf and racing (running, vehicular or otherwise) aren't sports and why basketball is. Golf is a game and racing is a competition, but neither are sports.

I guess baseball isn't a sport either, by that logic?

Impede meaning stop their attempts at victory, hence the "otherwise". You can catch a popped ball or tag a player running the bases, therefore baseball is a sport.

So racing faster and blocking someone who is behind you from passing, or shooting a lower score doesn't 'stop their attempts at victory'?

Very contradicting opinion.

For me, sports have to require physical ability and must have a winner determined by purely objective measures and not subjective 'judging', whether that be a score or a place finished.

Sports: Golf, Bowling, Darts, Billiards, swimming, auto racing
Not sports: Figure skating, gymnastics, synchronized swimming, cheerleading

I think he interpreted that line wrong TBH.

There are two arguments to be made about baseball:

1) It's not a sport, it's a game. Sorry.

2) It's a sport because you can stop someone's physical progression around the bases by getting them out.

If you favor 1), good for you not having an ego about labels :thumbu:

If you favor 2), that's all good but you have to acknowledge racing as a sport.

Basketball is a sport it's just a really boring one. In NBA they literally play zero defense.

I actually remember this. I think the straw that broke the camels back was steve nash bleeding all over himself in a primetime game if I'm not mistaken.

But no I have this problem with all basketballs.

I said "impede" not "stop"...

Running faster or getting higher/lower scores doesn't impede another person's ability to perform. Not directly, anyway.

So, did you say that, or did I dream it?
