because he’s a good goalie

It's the Martin St. Louis effect.

Martin St. Louis got his feelings hurt when his GM didn't pick him and requested a trade.

Now, every coach and GM picks their own guy(s). Tampa's coach took 3 players from Tampa to not offend them. St. Louis' GM took their goalie to not offend him.

It's not based on talent, but feelings.
Nail on the head. And if it doesn’t cost them now it will eventually. Way too much talent on the sidelines

Hockey Canada caught hell for not bringing enough talent at Christmas. This time, they brought too much talent - all small / we needed some size.

Hockey Canada management can't win.

Having said that, the goaltending picks were awful.
The 4 nations roster was finalized Feb 8th, but I'm sure behind the scenes the rosters were pretty much decided long before that. Nothing makes me think there was a change in thought process in the month that passed from the WJC fallout and the the way this team was built.

There's way to much emphasis on past successes, especially at a position where Canada hasn't had a really dominant player over a multi-year period. Just take the 3 Canadian goalies having the best seasons, or if you want to take one goalie like Binnington out of "legacy" or "big game experience" or whatever, at least take one of Blackwood, Thompson or Kuemper who are all statistically having better seasons as a fall back option.

I have a couple Blackwood signed rookie cards because I thought this kid was going to be a stud, my fingers are so crossed it comes true for Canada.

We need our international #1 goaltender and we do NOT have one lol.

Championship pedigree I assume. However it should have been Logan Thompson over Montembeault. Thats just stupidity. Next years Olympics is when they play for real. I assume, guys like Dubas and Armstrong wont be on the selection comittee by then. Canada was good enough to run the table at 4 nations. They squeeked by Sweden and nearly collapsed against Finland. Guys like Schiefele, Hyman, Suzuki, Dougie Hamilton, Bouchard etc etc should all get serious looks. Whether as extras or on bottom lines.

McDavid
Mackinnon
Point
Crosby
Marner
Hagel
Makar
Morissey
Theodore

Should all be locks, then choose the best team outside these guys. Not play favourites.

Even if he wins it for us on Thursday…he’d better not suit up (or even be chosen) for Team Canada ever again
It was actually cringy how much the SN cast was latching on to Binnington having a big game 7 against Boston in the SCF at TD Gardens nearly 6 years ago, as if there's some magical essence in the building that elevates his performance. Considering that was 6 years ago, and between two completely different teams, I don't know what conclusions they were trying to draw from one game that long ago, that by freak coincidence took place in the same building.

It's bad that's was a "storyline", and the whole panel avoided talking about any of the soft goals, the fact that you have arguably 3 better goalies not even on the team, or 2 others watching from the bench.

The unfortunate part is if Canada wins, Binnington will be the safe bet to get a start in the Olympics, and even if he loses he will still probably be #2 at worst.

The rest of the team hasn't looked much better TBH. grats, you put a 5 spot on Finland, doesn't change the fact that you played some atrocious defense in the final 6 minutes but in typical Canadian fashion you blame the goalie instead of looking at the entire play leading to the goal.

The picture, the location... I wonder why this guy is defending Jordan, a complete mystery. :sarcasm:

He IS a NHL starter, just middle of the pack.

His stickhandling has been awesome though, I didn't realize he was so good with the puck.

For two and a half periods it looked like Binnington was in top form. Then that near collapse with allowing three goals. Yes the team didn't play well and mailed it in in front of him when they figured they had it in the bag. But they didn't. This team makes me nervous where as they don't seem to put the nail in the coffin when they get the chance. If it was 3-0 instead of 4-0 the game is probably tied. MacKinnon did miss a good chance to seal it with an empty netter but the team - including Binnington - shouldn't let Finland back in the game so easily. I think there was plenty of opportunity to put Hill in there and see how he would do. Today would have been a good chance for that. They can't put Hill in cold now, they have to go with Binnington. This handcuffed them. So Binnington is our guy now and needs to pull out a big stop. Look, he can do it, he won a Stanley Cup in the rink he is going to play in. That helps. But I liked it better when Cujo would get benched in 2002 by his OWN NHL coach just based on national pride.

Because of this, I think that the coaches and management should not be from current NHL teams. In Finland, the national team's coach is the national team's coach. He doesn't coach a club team at the same time. Why is it so in NA?

According to MoneyPuck he's #46 in the league in GSAE. He's a replacement-level goaltender. Not NHL starter. And not middle of the pack. He's bad.

Binnington did counter Finland's dump and chase. Can't really blame the coach for picking him. He was another defenseman for Canada.

Don't expect him to make any game-changing saves though.
