How in the Blue Hell is Jordan Binnington the best Canada goaltender?

...that's a falsehood...Binnington was given the net and no other tender was even given a chance to play while Binner has played poorly...
Yeah cuz all of them equally sucked this year, Hill has a 900 save percentage on arguably the best team in the league, he only has himself to blame. I would've given him a shot after the US game, but that's a whatever point, he definitely didn't earn it by any stretch.

...and yet no one was given the chance to play but Binnington, who has played poorly in 3 straight games...you don't find that odd??... :dunno:

Canada's goaltending isn't great overall, but there are 13 Canadian goalie who have played in 20 games this season.

Hill, Binnington and Montembault rank 8th, 10th and 11th respectively in save % among those goalies.

This is the case of the guys selecting the team not picking the best guys available plain and simple.

Logan Thompson is 24-2-5 with a .921 sv% and if not for an incredible season from Hellebuyck would be the Vezina favourite this year. It's downright comical he didn't make the team over any of the three goalies selected.
In all fairness to the GM's who picked our goalies, Thompson is having his breakout year this year. He was a backup/1B in Vegas before going to Washington, so it's not like they didn't take the guy putting up the best stats for years on end. He's really improved over the past year. I think they should have taken Thompson over Montembault, Same with Blackwood, up until this year, he was a high potential, but inconsistent goalie who everyone was waiting on to find his upside. Both Thompson and Blackwood found it this year. I don't really blame the Canada management guys for not wanting to take a goalie roster with a bunch of guys who might have been breaking out, or might have just had a hot start to their seasons. But I do think that the 3rd goalie space should have went to one of them. If it had, then we wouldn't have to rely on Binnington.

Also, I don't think Binnington is an awful goalie. I think he is decidedly average most of the time. I know it was a nepotism thing that got him selected, and I'm fine with that, because he was just as good as most of the rest of the options, up until two of our goalies had breakout seasons this year. In hindsight, I wish they would have only brought one of Binnington or Hill, brought one of the "gamble" guys (Thompson or Blackwood), and one young goalie - Montembault is okay, Skinner would have been another option.

I'm more frustrated that we aren't trying out Hill after Binnington has been subpar for the entire tournament. He should be stapled to the press box for the next game, with Hill starting and Montembault playing backup.

Montembault is older than both Blackwood and Thompson fwiw. He’s a career sub .900 goalie and is 28 years old. There is literally zero justification for him being on the roster.

And if you want to argue for bringing a decidedly average goalie who was good in the past then they should have at least brought in someone who was playing average. Binnington has been one of the worst starters in the league this season.

It's crazy, how time goes by. I still think of Montembault as some kid, ha ha. But he was a bad pick regardless I guess. Blackwood should have had the "young guy with upside" role.

I'll never mind too much about Binnington being selected to go. Selected as the starter is ridiculous.

It's crazy how we have fallen from Roy/Brodeur/Belfour/Cujo to Binnington/Hill/Montembault.

The 4 nations roster was finalized Feb 8th, but I'm sure behind the scenes the rosters were pretty much decided long before that. Nothing makes me think there was a change in thought process in the month that passed from the WJC fallout and the the way this team was built.

There's way to much emphasis on past successes, especially at a position where Canada hasn't had a really dominant player over a multi-year period. Just take the 3 Canadian goalies having the best seasons, or if you want to take one goalie like Binnington out of "legacy" or "big game experience" or whatever, at least take one of Blackwood, Thompson or Kuemper who are all statistically having better seasons as a fall back option.
What has Binnington done since COVID? He has a career 0.906% saving percentage, and has been sub-par since the COVID season. As a Jets fan, that would be like starting Pavelec (circa 2014)

It's crazy how we have fallen from Roy/Brodeur/Belfour/Cujo to Binnington/Hill/Montembault.

This is inaccurate, considering Canada chose the three best goalies back in 2002. I do not argue that we have better goaltending 20 years ago, but Thompson, Kuemper, and Thompson are both 0.914% for their respective careers, which is above average, Thompson obviously having a career year, while Kuemper, who was always good, has rejuvenated himself in LA. Blackwood is the one goalie, who I could see them leaving off the team, as he is 28, and this is his breakout year, after nearly a decade of mediocrity.

I could see MAF rising to the occasion, as this is his final season, but then again age is a factor. For the life of me, I don't understand why they chose Motembeault. They guy is 28, and has a 0.898% for his career.

Dubas was scouting Montreal for like a month straight, rumored to be for Canada specifically watching Motembeault. There’s your answer. Guy couldn’t identify a good goalie if his life depended on it.

This is a list of the goaltenders who have played significant (knockout) games for Canada in best on best (or similar enough) situations since 1972:

Ken Dryden
Tony Esposito
Rogie Vachon
Gerry Cheevers
Mike Liut
Grant Fuhr
Bill Ranford
Curtis Joseph
Patrick Roy
Martin Brodeur
Roberto Luongo
Carey Price
Jordan Binnington

There are clear ebbs and flows, but Binnington is the worst goaltender on the list. The thing is that while he isn't the best goaltender Canada has, it isn't like there is a great option out there.

Not to mention Pete Peeters from 1984. And he had just won a Vezina in 1983. Yeah no doubt Binnington does not fit in on this list of nearly all Hall of Famers. And the ones that aren't, were playing like they were at that time.

I'll say it though, Binnington has it in him. It isn't as if he isn't capable of winning.

I think he was likely just a home town charity pick after Daccord was unable to get his paperwork sorted.

I mean the only reason for this is because our idiot coaches kept trying to force Hill to happen, There has been one patch were he was fairly pedestrian, but has been solid as rock outside of that. I 100% ship out Hill if that's what it costs to keep Thompson. I've also watched him single handedly keep us in games we had no business still being in numerous times, a frustration number of times really. I haven't really seen that kind of play from Hill.

The problem is it wasn't between Binnington and Thompson exclusively. Many are arguing Thompson would be the best goalie because he's having the best year.

Look at Marc-Andre Fleury. He has better career numbers than Binnington over 1000+ games played. He's having a better season than Binnington. He has more experience than Binnington. He has more Stanley Cups than Binnington. He's won more Vezina's than Binnington.

If you're going to argue Thompson has little experience and a short history of playing elite, MAF is the complete opposite. Somehow he wasn't considered but Binnington was annointed the starter because of experience? It makes no sense.

MAF is older than Jesus though. I wouldn't have taken him either. I agree that it makes no sense that Binnington was given the starter job, and it especially makes no sense that they haven't moved on to Aiden Hill.

Oilers fans have, ha ha.

Doug Armstrong is a huge homer, thats why Binnington and Parayko are on this team.

There were better players available but he wanted "his guys"

same reason why we have the entire TB Lightning second line, Cooper wanted his guys too

Doug Armstrong wants "his guy" in. Hill should be starting of who's there, Thompson should be there also.
The bigger problem is that Jordan Binnington, Adin Hill, and Logan Thompson are somehow Canada's best goalies.

When in the past you had teams with goalie depth like

Ed Belfour
Curtis Joseph
Martin Brodeur

or 2010

Brodeur
Luongo
Fleury

What the hell happened to Canada's goalie factory?

Why would they put Dubas in charge of picking the goaltending?

I didn’t say they put him in charge of picking goaltending. He’s an advisor for the team and by all accounts they tasked him with scouting that particular player. Being as he made the roster, one could connect that it was based on his report.

Dubas has one of the worst track records when it comes to goaltending. Letting him scout any particular goaltender is a headscratcher.
