How good has Dion Phaneuf been 10 years into his career?

FIRST OFF SORRY FOR ANY MISTAKES MADE THERE ARE A LOT OF STATS USED:shakehead

Well lets start of by looking at honors, and awards (or almost awards lol):
Dion coming in at 20 years old in the league put up 49 points and was 3rd place for the Calder, not bad but seeing as Ovie and Crosby were 1 and 2 its a pretty impressive feat and was top 10(8th) in Norris voting in his rookie season not bad at all. So in his 10 years Phaneuf has 1 top 20 Norris finishes(16th), 2 top 15 finishes (11th,12th), 2 top 10s(6th,8th) and one runner up only losing to the great Lidstrom.
He was a top 20 dman according to Norris voting which was done mostly in his time with the flames for most of his career. 4 Times in his career he wasnt top 20 and out of that 4, 2 times he was partially injured playing 66 and 70 games respectively.
adding in all star games and everything else we have

3 - time all star
1 - all star all rookie team
1 - first all star team
3rd place for calder
and
16th,12th,11th,8th,6th,2ns Norris finishes(not in order of year but best to worst)

Basic Stats( to pump up Phaneuf....lol):
Career TOI: 24:45
I thought I would include hit, block shots, points and turnover, takeaway ratio AMONG DMEN, 4 aspects i think are pretty basic and important part of being a dman, some are less important to some people but i thought i would include these 4.

Hits: 2nd,8th,6th,21st(ouch lol), 11th, 12th (injured season too), 7th ,6th, 29(injured season)( order from year to year)

Block shots: 97th,127th,94th,110th,95th,68th(injury season),53th,20th,54th(injury season)(order from year to year)

Points: 14th T,16th,5th,15th,42nd,46(injury season),12th, 9th T, 49th, 54th(injury season)

GVA/TKA: Not going to post the stats as its just tedious but for the most part phaneuf has been good(shocker i know) with maybe a bad season or two, when factoring in ice time played and usage and other stats mentioned below
if not facotring those in then phaneuf still ends up being avg.

Pretty straight forward, Phaneuf is annually amongst the hit leaders and has grown into pretty good shot blocker roughly top 60 over the last 4 seasons and other then on outlier year and one injury season is among top 15 more closer to top 7 in hits.
For points other then his two injury seasons 6/8 top 20 in points more top 15 though
overall pretty solid stats all round more of a hitter then a blocker but still, phaneuf can dish the hits, block some shots, grab some points and not be a turnover prone dman which is hard to say for any dman in the league

Advance stats(time to bring Phaneuf down a notch or two):
First off for those HERO chart fans(not sure how to post them here)
but there terrible. I'm not too big of a fan of them but there not nearly as good as they should be but I will give Phaneuf the benefit of the doubt seeing as every 2-3 year window he gets put into less and less offensive situation and more defensive so his HERO charts follow, from being good, to avg to crap. But still if you a big fan of these and put more stock then phaneuf has just been put down 1-2 notches.

Zone starts, competition and teammates:
Phaneuf has had better zone starts in his time in CGY then TOR,
55-60% ozone starts in CGY (57% avg) to cept one 26 game stint with the leafs
50-40%(avg 45%). This clearly shows Toronto is using phaneuf in a more defensive role and this is supported by the fact that his block shot totals are much higher and
his last few seasons have higher puck turnover rates.

Couldn't find any newer stats and not using stats from CGY seeing as he was great there, used better then more honors and almost awards and everything else i will use his time in TOR for competition, not using his 66 gms season
but from 2011-2013 Phaneuf has some of the most god awful teammates and ranking near the top for competition in those two seasons(again not cherry picking stats but couldn't find 2014,2015(injury season and 2010 season was injured as well but 2014, 2015 likely follows a similar trend while his first 100 games or so with the leafs are much better players and competition wise not hiding anything here)

Minimum 30 games played: 2011-2012, 3rd highest (quality of competition) vs
roughly upper middle of the pack for teammates
2012-2013: highest competition faced vs last for quality of teammates(shortened season i know)

point is his line mates vs competition is bad at certain times to downright horrible
at least in his time in TOR

Corsi: career is just under 50% same story here, 54% with CGY 46% with TOR

Overall, Dions numbers have been going down roughly every year but this is explained by the fact that he is taking on a variety of roles, being an all round player shown in the basic facts, and in adv stats, he is getting not enough offensive zone times and a bit too much d zone time while being paired with weak players and having to play against much better players which is in my opinion Phaneufs biggest challenge, its not playing too much his career avg is under 25 mins a night and while that is a fair amount its that he is expected to play those minutes when he is getting left to dry out there. Simple eye test would show that he hasnt played up to par last few seasons in particular last 2 or 1 BUT i think its less a fault of Phaneuf then the team he has to work with. Dion will make gaffs and look bad sometimes on the eye test but i doubt its as bad as some people make it seem, his adv shows its not exactly his fault in his last three seasons he has started close to 60% of his zone starts in his own end which is a large amount for a defense man. To add hes not slow but not fast either speed wise but can skate well and has pretty decent speed.

In conclusion i just wanted to highlight some stats that i use on Dion Phaneuf
yes, i am a leafs fan and probably appeared biased in my summary of Dion.
And would like to apologize if i didn't use other stats these are the main ones i look at and would glady look at other ones especially the ones that make Dion look bad
to get a better picture. cheers and sorry for the mistakes # no edit :naughty:

'Dion Phaneuf: So hated, he's underrated!"

No, but really - he's a top-4 defenseman who gets underrated all the time because of his awful contract. If he was making 3-4 mil a year, everyone would love him.

But he makes 7, so

Yea, he's underrated for sure. I'd love to have him as a 2nd pairing guy on the Oilers (or a top pairing guy if partnered with a franchise dman). It's just his contract that severely diminishes his trade value.

I liked Phaneuf early on in his career but I think he slowed down and I just hate his face so much with his big helmet that looks like a bowl of soup.
I also think he picks his spots with his cheap crosschecks he's really annoying.

Overall he's been and is still a solid player, just not worth his contract. Can you blame him though?

I'd pair him with Ceci on the 2nd pair and he'd be perfect. I thought in Calgary he was more explosive and used his clapper a lot more...

I haven't watched him enough to give much of an opinion other than I would rather have Josi at $4m than Phaneuf at $5.5m, much less $7m. However I do have one simple request. Please, PLEASE, do not quote the entire OP to reply. Do us all a favor and snip that post down so we don't have to scroll through it several times per page.

Thanks in advance!

Too inconsistent, but he is a steady at home defenseman who works hard. Don't think he's a top 4 defenseman though.

He's basically the same class of defenseman as Dennis Wideman or Mike Green. If you want to win, you really need to suck it up and use him as a true #4, as those two players' teams have come to realize themselves.

When I think strong D-cores I naturally slot him in at 4, maybe at 3 if your 4 is a good match. But definitely second pairing. Burke's biggest mistake was confusing Phaneuf with a Pronger.

He gets labelled "overrated" so much that I think he's actually underrated. He's a good player, just on a garbage contract and a garbage team. I'd gladly take him as the 2nd pair on the Canucks (if we're not putting contracts into account).

What if i don't want to TMI? ;)

As for Dion the way I look at his is simple, do I want him on my team (Oilers) right now. The answer for me is no, mostly because of the contract and the things you hear about his attitude in the locker room. That being said do i think he would make the Oilers better, probably but I don't think the positives he would bring would outweigh the negatives.

Might be one of the few times Celine comes out ahead in the looks department.
