How good are Devin Shore's intangibles?

Guys like Shore stick around because they work hard in practice, listen to the coaches and give you a consistent effort every night.

In Edmonton he often was playing ahead of guys that might be more talented or have more potential and it was frustrating. But from a coaches standpoint it's frustrating when you have better players on paper that don't listen or work hard everyday, so it becomes a simple decision for them.

Wait, which forum am I on? Is this a Shore thread on the main board? Weird!

He's ok. I'm not sure what he's like in a locker room, or what kind of leader he is, but he's a guy who can play hockey in the NHL well enough to not be a liability, and also not have any upside. I've seen a lot of him this year, and he's always there, being a guy. On the plus side, he skates hard regardless of what the rest of the team is doing, which has made him stand out a couple times this year.

Tell me more about him. Sounds like he's a lot like Boyd Gordon, who was a black hole offensively for the Coyotes, skated hard, was great in his own zone, and absolutely amazing at killing penalties. One of my favorite memories of him, which is also one of my favorite Coyotes memories, was when he blocked a hard shot on a penalty kill, with the puck hitting him right in the... uh... "midsection," but we were unable to clear the zone. Just seconds later, the puck came up to the point and he very, very bravely blocked another hard shot from the point man. He had to be helped off the ice once play finally stopped, with quite the ovation from the crowd.

He's not as good as Boyd Gordon in that way. The Wild have had a terrible penalty kill, but he isn't trusted on ours, getting minutes there once every 5-10 games. He does his best to get in front of shots, but I wouldn't say his defensive play is really noteworthy. He does the right thing, averagely. He does have some puck skill that he flashes occasionally, so you can see why he's a great AHL scorer, it just usually doesn't turn into anything more than a flash in the NHL, though.

Could be be a bit more like Andy Miele then? He won the Hobey Baker Award, was excellent in the AHL, then in the 15 NHL games we gave him he managed 0 goals and 2 assists. Did get into a fight though for some reason, despite being only 5'7". Against a guy who's 6'4".

I don't know, I'm just trying to think of someone from the Coyotes I could compare him to, I guess.

Maybe? I honestly haven't watched the Coyotes much since their Doan-Nagy days, so I'd have a very hard time making a comparison. He's a guy who is really good in the AHL, but what he does there just doesn't quite translate to the NHL. He gets an A for Affort though.

Can't say for certain but Oilers teammates were apparently devastated the times he got waived/when he left. One of the worst players in the NHL but I suppose it's just like real life: be well liked and hit the absolute minimum requirements for the job and chances are you'll stick around longer than much better performers.

I would be very, very surprised to find out that he is a locker room cancer. For him to have a job in the NHL he must have a HOF personality.

He's like a bigger, stronger, slower Tyson Jost. Utterly forgettable. On the plus side, he doesn't make a lot of stupid plays.

He's a 6-9 min per game guy on a league min $$ contract, so....

It is a bit surprising that he's been able to accumulate close to 500 games in the NHL at this point though.
