How does this compare to 2010?

For Canadians, both teams have a lot of the same players. They're all older and more experienced now, and I think that showed as the tournament progressed. Crosby and Toews once again come through when it counts. And this 2014 defensive core might be the best we'll ever see on international ice.

I don't think this tournament had anything on 2010 in terms of excitement or drama, though. That win vs. USA is my top hockey memory overall, nothing really compares to it since my team hasn't won squat in the NHL. Canada also got a relatively easy group this time around. It definitely wouldn't have been as easy if we were in the other group.

Your thoughts?

The gold medal game was, from I was told and read, complete domination after the first 10 or so minutes

2010 went to OT, in the final game, between Canada in the US in Canada

2010 was far more exciting: Canada tries to win at home while US goes for revenge from 2002

These Olympics, as far as hockey goes, weren't very exciting outside of the women's final and this would be true even had Canada lost

I think so much of it has to do with where you were and where you watched the game. Even though today's game was a bit of a blowout, if I'd watched on the big screen at a nice restaurant/sports bar the place would surely be rocking.

For drama, though, you can't beat 2010. 2002 was my favourite though, because it was our first Gold in the NHL Olympic era, and that team had to fight so hard.

This team was so good defensively, you almost got the sense that they couldn't lose. Even in the games where it was tied, they were consistently dominant in possession.

I think for most Canadian's 2010 will be more memorable because it was on home ice, during a reasonable time slot and a tighter game against a heated rival.

Edit: As a Russian fan, I enjoyed this one more even though we showed an embarrassing result; after the 7-3 loss in 2010 against Canada I just stopped watching, but after this loss I was happy for the Finns and routed for them. I enjoyed Finland's story a lot.

2010, winning at home but winning in Russia is pretty sweet too, Putin said if you win the hockey gold you win the tourney so I guess Canada wins the Olympics :)

Winning... at home... in OT... golden boy scores the golden goal... therefore breaking the record for most gold medals won by one nation in a single olympic... NOTHING can compare to that!

I made the analogy to a friend that Team Canada reminded me of GSP. Canada in 2010 was like GSP early in his career - explosive, dangerous and fast, but still he had some holes in his style and mental strength that made him vulnerable to the odd defeat. That is what made him and Canada 2010 so exciting to watch. Canada in 2014 reminded me of GSP during his title run - surgical in execution, using his strengths to exploit his opponents' weaknesses, and mentally strong enough to pull through adversity (almost unbeatable). However, the precision in which GSP and Canada 2014 over-whelmed opponents made it less exciting to watch, although one can still appreciate how the combined planning, effort, and talent led to dominance.

As good as this win was it slots outside the top-5 international wins for Canada.

I feel like we were cheated out of some offensive production. Seemed like opposing goaltenders stood on their heads against us.

2010 was much better all around, I liked watching many of the tight games like Czech vs. Latvia in the qualifying round. There were also a few big upsets like US vs. Canada in RR and Slovakia vs. Sweden in QF. Slovakia was awesome to watch and damn near made it to the Gold medal game after a tight match with Canada. Both medal games were exciting, it was probably the best tourney I ever seen.

2014 was about either watching the big teams dominate or having a "lesser" team pull out an unexpected win or stay in a tight game with one of the best teams. Latvia and Slovenia gained a ton of respect from many while some of the bigger name teams like Russia, Slovakia, and the Czechs were disappointments. It just wasn't as exciting.

I personally would like to see a group format similar to women's hockey, take the 4 of the top teams and put them in one group, 5-8 in the next, and 9-12 in the last group. Some of the best games were between the "lesser" teams.

To put it in video game analogy, Canada-USA is like Megaman for the NES...it was hard but the difficulty was worth it when you finally beat the game. Canada-Sweden was more like Pokemon X using the Exp. Share. The Exp Share made you overleveled for the Elite 4, which made the game too easy for you.

Maybe I just prefer 2010's game because of how close it was.

Equal, just not as exciting in celebrations (based off the high confidence from this group of players). A lot of reasons to want a win, not just a gold medal.

- Back to Back
- Win on Olympic Ice
- Win on Olympic Ice in Europe
- Go undefeated.
- Win in Russia
- Win against the US
- Prove this group of players is really one of the most dominant ever.
- Break the gold medal drought since Vancouver.
- Prove all the naysayers from every reason they offered and laugh at the trolls.

2010 way better.

Worst thing this time is the amount of fellow countrymen coming across as sore losers and crybabies on these forums. Glad we lost, to the better team, to be honest. The gloating would've been even more unbearable to read then the whining about anything and nothing.

IMHO for Canada/Canadians even if today was the greatest hockey game ever played to end the greatest hockey tournament ever held it still wasn't going to measure up to either 2002 and 2010.

In 2002 two NHL teams had recently gone south and at least three more had been struggling to hang on. Teams weren't doing much better on the ice either as at the time of the '02 tournament only once since '94 had a Canadian team made it as far as the Conference Finals. The % of Canadian players in the NHL had plummeted over the previous decade and Canada really wasn't winning international competitions. It's sort of hard to comprehend now because especially after today plenty of people will be at their obnoxious "it's our game' worst, but back in '02 Canada's outlook when it came to hockey had become really pessimistic. After Canada struggled in the round robin that pessimisism was off the charts. Canada winning gold was a much needed lift after what had been a pretty grim decade.

Obviously with 2010 it was a once in a generation (at best) home Olympics. Not winning gold in hockey would have been a pretty big let down to an Olympics that, after a really shaky/tragic start, had provided the country with a pretty steady stream of warm fuzzy feel good moments for two straight weeks. If Canada had lost to the US (for a 2nd time in a week) for a lot of people it would have made an event that felt almost perfect feel far from it.

Better hockey in 2010, unless, I suppose, you're one of those defensive play purists. Still very impressed with Canada's play, and Latvia as well as a few other teams that were able to shut down much more talented offense. Finland played with a lot of heart and were enjoyable to watch for that.

But for pure entertainment based on the hockey itself? 2010, no question. As a Canadian, 2010 is better for the drama and storyline too, as well as the way it played out for us.

too many injuries this year. that ruined my excitement quite a bit. tho seeing those young stars of ours and Rask in the olympics was very exciting.

Honestly I was pretty bored watching team Canada this year. Partly because they were way too good....and maybe the fact that the gold medal game was at 4 am and I was nodding off during the game. But also the international ice just makes the game less exciting. There's less physical play....zero forecheck and the turnovers that those create...and the pucks just don't get to the net. Its a slow...methodical puck possession game with little intensity and even more defensively oriented than the NHL.

2010 was far more exciting. 2014 was far more dominating. I never really felt like we wouldn't win this time, and that has not happened since World Juniors 2004.

As happy as I am with 2014, 2010 was just too storybook to trump. 2002 ranks ahead of this tournament for me personally as well.
