How does this compare to 2010?

To put it in video game analogy, Canada-USA is like Megaman for the NES...it was hard but the difficulty was worth it when you finally beat the game. Canada-Sweden was more like Pokemon X using the Exp. Share. The Exp Share made you overleveled for the Elite 4, which made the game too easy for you.

Maybe I just prefer 2010's game because of how close it was.

It wasn't as exciting as 2010 because we were just so dominant. At no point during this tournament did I get nervous or have butterflies in my stomach.

That 2010 ot game had me so nervous it was crazy. Then when Crosby scored that golden goal I felt so much joy and elation for a hockey game that will only be matched when the canucks win the cup.

Today I was just clock watching until the gold medal was handed out cause the outcome was never in doubt as soon as toews scored.

Also atmosphere has a lot to do with it too. The home ice crowd can't be matched. It was loud and electric. Here because we aren't the home team the crowd wasn't very loud and it just felt like an ordinary game.

2010

2002

2014

Felt way different today than I did in 2010 or 2002. Maybe it was because I was alone, tired, and it was still dark here when it happened. You can't top 2010 no matter what. But 2002 was awesome as well.

Players just seemed to "expect" the victory today and didn't really act like they appreciated it.

I think it's more exciting when the team that wins (and the one you're cheering for) is not defending the title. Thus, 2010 was much more exciting.

The thing for me which made 2010 so special was the drama and the uncertainty of winning. The Americans were playing out of their minds under Ron Wilson, and aside from the obvious threats in the Russians and Swedes, the Finns, Czechs, and Slovaks all had legitimate medal hopes. Then of course we saw the rise of the Swiss national program. We had just lost our World Junior hegemony so this was so needed to mend the wrongs of Turin.

2014 was much more subdued, but right now I feel more satisfied about the state of Canadian hockey. Cause even with 2010 we still had questions about Canada being the major hockey power because of some horrible worlds, and bad WJC endings. Now though, with 2 straight Olympic Golds, one in Canada on small ice, one in Russia on big ice, no other team can stake claim to being the best in the world no matter what happens in the next few World Championships and World Juniors

Oh 2010 for sure beats it. How could it not? We're on our home turf, there were virtually no injuries that kept anyone off the team (I really missed Stamkos in this tournament on the big ice in 2014) and of course the tension with overtime in the gold medal game. That team was a little greener than this one I thought. They made some mistakes but could still look just flat out dominant as well. I guess another reason is that hockey on the NHL ice is always more exciting. Big ice doesn't equate more goals or more speed by any means.

2002 I was a nervous wreck as well as 2010. After two losses at the top level and the hand wringing as to whether or not we have any skill any more (remember that panic attack?) plus the fact that it was in a better time zone as well as partially at home. Either way, after those two games they were afternoon games on a Sunday. The country was lining up and down the streets with people high fiving each other and it went on and on and on. Today the game was at 7am EST. The game was over shortly after 9am. Not sure if others felt the same way but you don't feel like going downtown at that time of the day. So the time zone thing changes things a bit.

I think one thing I've learned even more is that the North American game trumps the European game in terms of entertainment. No one wants to watch a game with no forechecking and no hunger to score. Canada wasn't like this at all of course, neither were the Americans or Russians. Despite the dominance on defense Canada was still trying to score every single shift. Other teams weren't, and I think it made me miss the NHL ice just a bit because the European ice can make the game feel more like soccer.

Either way, I felt this team was going to win. I almost feel like I was the only one on these boards that felt this way even after Latvia. It was still good hockey, but when you dominate like that the tension goes down, so this is the first gold medal game where I was sort of relaxing.

Not only was it better because it was played on NHL-ice, but all of the teams' rosters outside of Canada were basically far better on paper as well. Less injuries, more great players still in their primes.

2010 beats it for sure, but as a Habs fan I was really thrilled to finally be able to cheer a Habs player on team Canada and see him get the best goalie award.

For Canada?

2010 was more entertaining. 2014 was more impressive.

I remember in 2010, when Canada played Russia. It wasn't a particularly entertaining game, because it wasn't close. The result was never in doubt after the first period.

But it was a fun game to watch, just because it was fun for a lot of Canadians to watch a team they were cheering for play SO WELL.

That was basically the entire 2014 tournament. The games didn't elicit entertainment so much as just pure admiration. Canada went in and dominated everybody in every facet of the game aside from finishing. They were a machine.

The woman's gold medal game this year was incredible and rivals the 2010 gold medal men's game.

2010 was in Canada and we needed to win. They started very slow. The tournament from top to bottom was stronger. A team like Slovakia could have won it all. In this tournament, they were a total non-factor along with Russia and the Czechs.

2014 was in Russia. Canada doesn't win a whole lot in Europe, so I don't think we expected to win, it was a play hard and see what happens kind of vibe coming from the average Joe. They played very well right from the start. There weren't as many strong teams in this tournament. There wasn't a lot of drama, it was a dominant performance and gratifying, but 2010 will always be tops for anyone who was old enough to recall it.

I agree with this! 2010 was super nerve-wracking & exciting! But 2014 was nice because I could watch with better nerves!!

Last time was more fun. But still happy with this as well!

It's going to take a lot to ever beat 2010, if ever.

There's only 2 scenarios I could ever imagine 2010 or 2002 being beaten;
-a game like the womens final this year played in North America.
-if we get to a point where Canada is no longer the #1 nation of hockey and we win via huge upset.

2002 was the lowest point for Canadian hockey; we'd lost the last two best on best tournaments as well as 2 franchises,w e also had a 5 year drought in the world juniors at the time. That was the only time Canada was not considered the best nation of hockey. Gretzky instilled the passion into the nation. Had we lost that tournament, it could have been catastrophic for Canadian hockey.

I'm glad that I can read the newspaper tomorrow without having to skip over the sports section from all these 'experts' weighing in on what's wrong with the sport but there's no comparison. I'd put this one on par with the 2004 world cup. Maybe slightly higher because it was in mother russia.

Tournament as a whole wasn't too great. Slovakia and the Czechs weren't any good, the Russians failed miserably in their home country, lots of injuries all around, Sweden didn't have a very hard road to the first seed and gold medal game, crowds were poor, and the hours a lot of us were watching at sucked.
