Speculation: How does Dallas make cap space in the offseason?

Let’s say they move Dumba’s full cap hit without anything back. They’ll have $9m to fill four bottom six wingers, a top4 dman, and a couple extras. That’s extremely tight….Duchene is not taking that much of a discount. They’ll need to go bargain bin hunting for next year. 26-27 season they’ll be fine with the big cap jump.
Yea they may need to move on from Marchment too unfortunately. We’ll see what happens.

They only really need a bottom pairing rd, with or without Dumba.
Someone to play next to Bichsel
Harley -Heiskanen
Lindell-Lyubushkin
Bichsel-anyone but dumba

Dallas trades Rantanen back to Carolina in the offseason.

“When Brindamour showed up, he said, ‘There’s one team you'll go play for and you're not leaving for 8 years.’”

It would really make sense for Dallas to target Rasmus Andersson in the offseason, getting a top 4 defenseman making less than $5m would exactly what they need... with Bourque being a prime candidate for an offer sheet and the Flames needing a young RHS Center, it really feels like the perfect storm for a deal. I would think Andersson @ 50% retention and Bourque would be fairly close in value.

to Dallas
- Rasmus Andersson (50% retained $2,775,000)
to Calgary
- Mavrik Bourque (RFA)
- Matt Dumba (3,750,000)
- 3rd in 2025 (for taking Dumba)

I’ve always wanted to see what would happen if a GM refused to acknowledge the salary cap and how the league would handle it
Likely all a fine, loss of draft picks and a cancellation of the contract(s) that caused them to exceed the cap.

Resign Benn and Granlund, let go of Dadanov, Ceci. Benn knows better than anyone else that if he wants a cup before he retires he needs to take a heavy discount.

Stars have a 16 man roster with $5,323,334 of cap space. Notable UFA/RFAs from there team are: Benn, Duchene, Granlund, Dadonov, Ceci, Bourque, and Lundkvist.

I see them not re-signing Benn, Granlund, Dadonov, and Ceci.

But you'd like to think they'd definitely sign Duchene and the RFAs.
Dallas wants to keep Benn.

Benn not going anywhere. He'll sign a pretty cheap deal . Dumba and Marchment are obvious solution to clear some cap. Afterwards we'll have to see. Dumba we probably have to add to but Marchment is worth his money and probably even slightly underpaid for what he brings.

Math is not hard in this case. Jamie Bean, 35 years 9.5 cao hit this year. UFA July 1st so they just have to find 2.5 and the cap is going up. I do not think Ducshene will shoot the moon for a new contract but will take what he is earning now

That top line RD is just as hard to find as a top 15 C in the league IMO.
Maybe they go big, drop a lot of salary in trade and trade for Dobson?

Why would Dallas run Heiskanen- Harley- Lindell LD?

It’s going to be Harley- Heiskanen. Probably the best top pair in the league for the next 5-8 years

Robertson Johnston Rantanen
Marchement Hintz Seguin
_____ Steel _____
_____ Bach _____

Heiskanen _____
Harley Dumba
Lindell Lybushkin

Oettinger
DeSmith

They could also just go bargain bin hunting as they have all the key pieces locked up.

for the D

Harley / Miro
Lindell / Lundkvist (RFA)
Bischel (ELC) / Lbuyshkin

Dumba is traded (Nill cashes in every favor after 2+ decades in the league) to free up money to sign Nils and Bourque RFA deals

Benn re-signs for a deferred or an over-35 contract. i can see a $1m with $1m performance bonus. This trade was made for the Benn window; I’d be shocked if he wasn’t consulted beforehand with his next contract in mind

There’s also a small chance Seguin LTIR-etires with 2 years left @ $9.85. New daddy, missed multiple seasons with massive leg/hip injuries…its his call. Quality of life to think about. This year’s cup run is big for the team

It looks like they need to move Robertson for futures and ELCs

By my estimate they can fill roster with ELC_ league min contracts.

If they move one of them they cou ln d resign benn at $5M and use space for something small or a $2M-$3M bridge player in return

Yes, 100%. Dumba is still tradeable because of just how scarce RHD truly are.

It's also the reason he got that money in the first place and the Lyubuskin contract is acceptable . Hell the Leafs spend ~$1.5M on RD with completely shot knees just in case he could still be salvaged .

Calgary could help out a lot here.
Would something like Dumba + Bourque for Coleman (50%) + Mid pick work?

If not, we'd be happy to offer sheet Bourque 4.5Mx2 (Broberg deal) for the 2nd compensation?

What's likely to happen is the Stars sign Benn to a low base salary, bonus laden contract.
As he will be 35, he can sign a collection of 1yr deals with low base salary high bonus payout and if they exceed the bonus cushion, they can roll over the amount to the next year.

He could do something like 1mil base with 3m in bonuses and the Stars could essentially roll over the cushion overage to the next year.

Something like
1741790117939.png

is feasible with around 5m to add an extra forward and d-man, by doing nothing more than dumping Marchment and Dumbass.

A trade like Marchment for Noessen would work quite well.
then find a cheapish 7th d
(assumed 95.5m cap)

If they have 5M left they could also idk keep Marchment for the one year .
Ideally, they keep more than 500k, to absorb Benn's bonus money, also have to assume some fluctuation on the contracts. IE Bourque might get 2.25, Benn 1.5-2, Maybe Duchene gets 4 or 4.5 this time. a little more flexibility by moving on from Marchment.

If it works out, yeah, they could keep marchment for the year, but it's probably better to have a little more space to work with, it's not like he's a big loss anyway

If they offload Dumba + an asset and put Seguin on LTIR, they'll have over 18 million in space.

If they can't find a taker for Dumba and have to buy him out, that still creates lots of space.
