How do you grade Laviolette and the coaching staff on the 23-24 season + playoffs?

It’s not about running it through any one person, it’s not basketball. Just put as many players as possible out there who can create an advantage and keep the play going if the puck is given to them so that the play isn’t dying on one players stick every time the team starts snapping it around or tries to enter the zone. It’s 2024, everyone out there needs to be a dynamic high IQ player, not a bum who wants to stand still in the 1-3-1 and wait for someone to put it on a tee
 
I had more of a problem with the deadline additions than with the coaching. It’s very obvious that they should have gone all-in for Guentzel, especially if they thought Chytil could return. Think that’s what cost them more than anything. Roslovic and Wennberg were one trick ponies, I hope they aren’t brought back.

Laf has shown dynamism on the PP not at all and Mika has a proven PP track record. Shooting and making plays. OV and Stammer…now those are some stand still PP bums.

Can’t say i agree there. Also OV literally does suck now and just stand still because he has no plus offensive skills at this point other than shooting while wide open. Stamkos is another terrible example because he isn’t just standing there. Tampa power play is built entirely on seam passing between the walls for one timers , bumper plays and setting up triangles for high danger looks. Not gimmick tip plays like NYR are doing. Put Laf in the Kucherov spot and now that can be replicated

I said A+. People were saying we would not even make the playoffs before this season. We ended up with the best regular season record in the NHL and 2 games from the cup finals.

I saw two F grades? Seriously?

C+ only because, when it was not working, he made small changes then went back to the old ways. He only singled out Rempe, why not bench other players that took a bad penalty or weren’t showing up? Why not Lafy on 1st PP and I would like to see him get some PK time as well. More ice time for Trocheck. He should play more than Mika. I’d love to see Trocheck and Kreider together.

One trick ponies need to... you know... do a trick. They weren't actively bad, but certainly subpar. Vatrano was a one trick pony because he actually had a cannon of a shot.

Who said we wouldn't make the playoffs before this season? I literally can't recall anyone saying that.

I read it on HF as well as from a couple of talking heads. Think about how we went out last year. Was lots of doom and gloom. Lots of bashing our coach selection process as well. Preseason predictions had us in 3rd place in our division after Carolina and NJ at best usually.

He sat Cuylle and Kakko at times. Really not sure what you mean, there.

Sure. The problem with Roslovic and Wennberg is like when you have a NBA team with a guy that can’t shoot and you are basically playing 4 on 5. It’s the same thing. You need something that at least resembles a threat. Hated not getting Guentzel tried to look at it in context at the time but ugh.
 
Gave him a b, I was really confused that we went to a man on man d when Fox had one leg and trouba hates quick turns. It left us chasing a lot and gave me flashbacks of Vigneault hockey where everyone was tired, hemmed in and out of position. Breaking up Schneider and Miller was weird too.
Actually giving Lafreniere time to adjust and become a good player was something we needed.

Come on, have you ever actually played on or run a pp? It's not that hard to create a pp with Panarin, Kreider, Trochek, Fox and Lafreniere. That's an embarrassing amount of exactly what you want on a pp. Taking our worst shooter off it and adding one of our best players on it will only make it better unless we feel our coaches are eating paint chips and can't possibly figure a way for it to work.

His regular season was good but I was disappointed in his approach in the playoffs when it counted the most, particularly against Florida. He should have put Laf on PP1, there was also b2b games where Laf got about 15 minutes. He was their most dynamic skater and you just have to give him more minutes. Putting Trouba-Miller back together and playing man to man were stupid decisions and it was basically a disaster. Gave Rempe 4 minutes a night instead of possibly being creative and going 11/7 where Jones could get a few shifts. Overall I give him a B- but the last series left a bad taste in my mouth.

You’re talking to a former high major DOBO with elite half court concepts who also happens to be a hockey savant. Gonna go out on a limb and say Mika is the most feared one-timer shooting threat out of the 6 players in this conversation.

By who the Zamboni driver? He hasn't hit the mark regularily on his one timer since last year. His shot was more likely to careen around the wall and hit our own net then theirs

If Laf playing on PP1 is a non-negotiable then I guess I would have done this…

Laf and the fun bunch

And then play the S out of PP2. They don’t leave the ice til 1.5 more clears than seems appropriate.

Special teams was our biggest competitive advantage all year. You want to switch up things that have proven track records because in hindsight “what’s the worst that would have happened!” Not to mention, the adjustment everyone wants to make is just an emotional one because Laf is the shiny toy and everyone is frustrated by Mika. It makes no sense schematically. It’s like trying to put a lefty thrower at shortstop. Speaking of which, I guess you would have been advocating for benching Judge at the end of April too. What’s the worst that could have happened?

(Man I’m throwing 105 on the black).

And you know how I know it’s more emotional than schematic? Because for years all the donks used to say that Laf should be in the bumper and that is literally a one for one comp with playing a lefty at shortstop.
