the thing to remember with these guys is that they were all brought in during lalonde's reign of suck. i hope at least a couple of these guys pick it up under mclellan

edit: being up 4-1 on the caps in the 1st period is a good example of that. chiarot with a goal, gus with a point, kane with a goal and an assist. let mclellan cook before we decide all these guys are trash
Love it

Looking at the stats of the top 3 UFA LHD over the last 5 seasons (thank you, Grok):

*Attempt to summarize..
1) Chychrun is the only one with injury history...and Chychrun/Provorov are workhorses.
2) Chychrun is the best offensively, followed closely by Provorov.
3) Pettersson is the best defensively...Chychrun/Provorov about equally bad.
4) Not a huge difference between the 3 in terms of physicality...but it goes Chychrun-1, Pettersson-2, Provorov-3.

.....

Jakub Chychrun:
26
6'2, 215
304 games (79%)...........Last
24:36 avg TOI..........1st
175 pts (0.58 per/g)..........1st
-67 (-13.4 per/season)...........Last
452 hits (1.49 per/g)..........1st

Marcus Pettersson:
28
6'3, 200
371 games (96%)..........1st
20:45 avg TOI...........Last
99 pts (0.27 per/g)..........Last
+53 (+10.6 per/season)..........1st
490 hits (1.32 per/g)...........2nd

Ivan Provorov:
27
6-1, 201
368 games (96%)..........1st
24:46 avg TOI..........1st
169 pts (0.5 per/g)..........2nd
-51 (-10.2 per/season)...........2nd
466 hits (1.27 per/g)...........Last

.....

You want ASP with a sound defensive partner, so you basically have two options...

Edvinsson---Seider
Pettersson---ASP

or

Chychrun/Provorov---Seider
Edvinsson---ASP

.....

Assuming we could get any of the 3 (stupid assumption)...

I would take Provorov > Chychrun bc of the injury history.

Not sure if I would take Provorov > Pettersson. But I suspect Yzerman would prefer the better defender.
Does anyone have any thoughts on adding Chychrun, Pettersson or Provorov this summer?

I would not mind signing Marner next season if possible.

Cat-Larkin-Marner
???-Kasper-Raymond

Could make for a decent top 6 if we figure out who the 2LW is.
We'll see what kind of case Veleno makes for that spot from here on out.

A healthy Mazur would be another candidate.

3 out of 4 top 6 wingers would be 6 feet or under. I'd pass on marner , rather give that money to rantanen at that point but rather target someone 22-26 that can be here longterm in they're prime

Given the choice I definitely prefer Rantanen but beggars can't be choosers and we shouldn't be turning our nose up to any 90 point players.

We'll never win cups with 3 out 4 top 6 wingers being 6 feet and under + nygaard coming so we should be looking for a left winger

Plus like hobnob said I dont think he'll be worth what he wants and we'd regret it later on

I wouldn't disagree with the bolded but changes could be made elsewhere, like trading Debrincat for a similar deal we paid to acquire him. You can backfill your cupboards by keeping the picks/prospect or flip those assets out for a better fit inside the top 6. Guys like Kempe, Connor, Tuch and many others will be in the final year of their deal.

Theoretically you could so something like:
  • Sign Marner.
  • Trade Debrincat for assets
  • Flip said assets for Kempe/Connor/Tuch

Well been saying for the longest time I'd trade debrincat so you wont get any argument from me. No change yzerman gives him 7 years

Raymond or nygard goes to the left?? Assuming marner and raymond are top 6 We'd have 2 spots on the left for nygard buchelnikov possibly 1st this year etc...

I would still pass on marner personally

oh man it's too bad Marner is only 6' 0" instead of 6'1"

guess we have no choice but to pass on him and go after Jordan Greenway instead
Now you get it

I doubt he'll be an option for us but I think you have to aggressively pursue any 90+ point players that become available. Obviously a big contract comes with some risk but its worth the swing imo.

I agree we should be aggressive and make moves I just think we should target someone younger with high upside who can be here longterm with raymond etc...

Mctavish, cozens, byfield etc.... marner's best years will be behind him + he's had 0 playoff success so not like he can bring someone to the team in that department that we'd need

I wouldn't assume that we will even have an option to sign the massive marquee free agents. Detroit isn't exactly a destination and it's not just as simple as "Y STEVIE, U SO BAD! Just sign him f0r $85M LOLz!" A lot goes into these free agency pick ups and this isn't the 2001 Red Wings. If you were offered 12M a year from DAL as a long term replacement for Benn vs. 14M from DET... which one are you taking?

1. logic. an incorrect proposition that, by forming the basis of an argument, will almost certainly lead to an invalid or logically unsound conclusion.

i was looking on wikipedia. on hockey reference they are all 6 foot and below except cirelli. he's 6'1

my point is that during that run, 7 of the top 11 scorers (6 excluding cirelli) were all forwards 6 foot or shorter. 3 of them were dmen (one of which, shattenkirk, is also 6 foot) only 2 forwards, killorn and cirelli, both 6'1. and they only combined for 19 points in 25 games

edit: here's another one - zetterberg, datsyuk, hudler, holmstrom, filppula, helm, draper, cleary

look man, if you're going to just make shit up, i'm going to call you out on it. you made a claim that is demonstrably false. i just gave you 2 examples off the top of my head that prove it

also, stamkos only played 3 minutes during that entire run. it was a bunch of "average height" guys that got it done
