Injury Report: How do YOU fix the Red Wings? 2.0!

Very easily.

1) Trade Larkin and DeBrincat for two 1st Rd picks each.

2) Overpay to sign Duchene, Tavares, Marchand and Orlov all to 3yr deals (and Kane to a 2yr deal) so we don’t take a step back.

Next yr..

Tavares-Duchene-Raymond
Marchand-Kasper-Kane
Soder-Danielson-Mazur
Ras-Copp-Compher

Edvinsson-Seider
Orlov-ASP
Chiarot-Johansson

Mrazek, Talbot

*****Progresses to…*****

25 1st-Kasper-Raymond
26 1st-Danielson-MBN
Buchelnikov-25 1st-26 1st
Soder-Finnie-Mazur

Edvinsson-Seider
25 1st-ASP
Johansson-26 1st

Cossa, Augustine
Does that work in Be A GM mode?

Apparently, it's trade Larkin and let Yzerman continue shopping in UFA for guys and draft for the 2777 season.

I'm not sure you do, this team/rebuild is going down imo without a major trade. Yzerman's likely got two or three years though still to work with.

Third line, fourth line, last pairing defense sucks so bad, yet we're focusing on our best player(arguably). :eyeroll: Seems reasonable.

As always, before fixing someting let's agree what is there to fix. I decided to take Bultman's to-do list which i think is mostly fair. Max has identified following personell related issues (which are mostly obvious, but still good work to pronounce them):

- Promote prospects
- Re-sign Kane (or replace him)
- Fix penalty kill
- Sign top line winger
- Sort out bottom six
- Sign top 4 defenseman

First, we need to get rid of players that don't have future going forward. I think everybody is happy to load a trebuchet with Holl and Tarasenko and send them towards a higher levels of stratosphere, which is unfortunately will be only possible by the means of buy-out. I also think, Berggren does not have a place in this team - he didn't show that he is a worthy replacement for Kane, and don't think there is another spot for player like him.
Also having one of Compher or Copp on the forth line with the emergence of Kasper (who i think needs to stay at center) is a waste of ressources and does not help to solve the point 5 from above, so one has to go. My preference would be to keep Copp.
I also think Chiarot needs to go, he is not a top pair defenseman and if ASP is going to play he will start on the third pair. I don't think Chiarot is the best partner for him to start his NHL career, so he has to go as well.

This leaves us with following roster:

X1-Larkin-Raymond
DeBrincat-Kasper-X2
Söderblom-Copp- X3
Rasmussen-X4-X5

X6-Seider
Edvinsson-AlJo
X7-X8

Goalies

Top line forward.

Red Wings need somebody who can win puck for Raymond and Larkin, while being able to keep up with them and finish. I don't think there is a perfect fit in Free Agency, maybe with exception of Marchand. But he is most probably not coming, barring a massive overpayment, and i don't think overpaying a 37-year-old is a good strategy. I think this top line line scorer will only come via trade, Red Wings have a lot of chips to push, starting with 12th overall, young players like Söderblom and to lesser degree Berggren, prospects (first and foremost Augustine). Bultman suggest to find a Hagel, which is a good plan, but much easier said as done. But i don't think it is necessary to find a Hagel. I think this is a spot somebody like MBN or Mazur can claim in the future so theoretically it is not necessary to pay for a long-term solution now.

I think somebody like Jared McCann can be a good target here, he has 2 years on a (very team friendly) contract and Seattle is not doing anything and maybe better of to tank for McKenna. I think 12th, Söderblom and a defensive prospect like Wallinder should do that.

Alternatively, somebody like DeBrusk would work well here, but i doubt Canucks will trade him. On bargain bin level, somebody like Ross Colton can work here, Avs might be happy to re-unite with Compher given their struggles to fill 2C spot since he left.

I don't think i'm able to identify a Hagel here, maybe somebody like Cuylle or Foerster, but Rangers and Flyers have no reason to trade them.

Re-sign Kane

Tbh, i wouldn't re-sign him. This offseason is a perfect opportunity to upgrade him, contrary to the top scorer spot there is no in-house long term solution (i don't believe in Buchelnikov or Lombardi being able to cover this in the next couple of years). Sign Marner, Kane is a plan B. Berggren is Plan C i guess.

Sign a Top-4 defenseman

I don't think it make sense to invest heavilly in somebody like Gavrikov or Provorov, given that Edvinsson and hopefully ASP will need to be paid soon. I also dislike Provorov and not sure he won't turn into pumpkin the minute gets paid given his was good in contract years recently. I'd rather sign somebody like Orlov. Alternatively trade for somebody like Pelech - Isles need to re-sign Romanov and Dobson, or they might realise that they need to rebuild properly.

Fix PK

While goalie related issues cannot be fixed that easily, having a more assignment sure defensemen instead of Chiarot and Holl should help. Additionally to Orlov, I would also sign Lindgren who i think will work well with ASP on the third pair and will also help to solidify PK. Also signing some quality 4th liners like Danforth and a good face off center like Dvorak will help PK a lot.

Bottom six

Have Copp centering a more 2 way third line and a proper checking line.

Promote prospects

Mazur, Danielson, ASP would be my guess. Also given that Talbot and Mrazek are injury prone and bring almost 100 years of age together, i think Cossa will see a lot of action.

Result:

McCann-Larkin-Raymond
DeBrincat-Kasper-Marner
Mazur-Copp-Danielson
Rasmussen-Dvorak-Danforth
Watson

Orlov-Seider
Edvinsson-AlJo
Lindgren-ASP
Gustafsson

Talbot
Mrazek

Need to make a very strong run at Gavrikov/Provorov. If we strike out on both, we need to have some trades lined up. I would be in constant communication with Buffalo about what would it take for Byram. I would be willing to put together a pretty expensive package to bring him in and round out the top 4 for the foreseeable future. I also would be calling teams like Anaheim to see if one of their young defenseman are available.

What I am not going to do is walk out of this summer without bringing in a defenseman that clearly upgrades the top 4. We are not doing a repeat of last summer. Either Seider or ASP are going to need a partner that is better than what we currently have.

Getting a top 6 forward is not as important to me. I would probably put an offer in for one of Boeser/Ehlers, but I do not view this as nearly as critical as bringing in an upgrade on the blue line. If Kane wants to come back on another 1 year deal, cool. If not, cool.

I would allow for a very honest competition between Mrazek and Cossa for the #2 goalie spot, and I would try to implement at least 2-3 rookies for opening night.

I would try to send off guys like Compher, Holl, for mid-late picks if possible. If I can't find a suitor for Holl, I would very seriously consider a buy-out. While we are on the topic or removing dead weight, I would flip Berggren for a draft pick or prospect. We are at that point.

Cat-Larkin-Raymond
Boeser/Rookie-Kasper-Kane
Mazur-Compher-Tarasenko
Rasmsusen-Copp-Soderblom

Byram/Provorov/Trade-Seider
Edvinsson-ASP
Chiarot-Johansson
Gustafson

Talbot
Cossa
Mrazek

*Not sure if this would be cap compliant, or if we had have to shed some salary.

I work more kids in up front and try to get a middle pair quality D in the offseason. Something like:

Debrincat-Larkin-Danielson
Lombardi
-Kasper-Raymond
Soderblom-Copp-Mazur
Rasmussen-Compher-Tank

Ed-Mo
Albert-ASP
Chia-Fabbro

Much to the chagrin of @norrisnick I wouldn't be against bringing Kane back, but I want to see more kids up front.

this is the best and most realistic option out of those strange things proposed in this thread.

I like your premise but absolutely hate your 4th line.

We absolutely have to get rid of tank and need to find a taker for Compher.

I'm sure my methodology isn't up to par with NHL Team Biometrics: Average Age, Height, and Weight | leftwinglock.com but taking the age of all these players and adding 1, it comes to an average age of 25.61
Tied for the youngest in the league this year.

The youngest teams this year were:
Buffalo
San Jose
Philadelphia
Boston
Montreal
Anaheim

....I'm not so sure loading the team up with kids is the way to take the next step and make the playoffs

Yup

Our D needs a sizeable makeover. We must bring in a top 3 dman plus carve out an insulated spot for ASP... that Dman must be a defensive dnan who excels at the PK.

Our top 6 needs another legit scoring threat

Our bottom 6 needs a skill upgrade AND a physical upgrade

We must employ 1 or 2 rookies upfront

Holl
Berggren
Rasmussen
Tank

Those x4 guys need to be removed from the roster in my opinion

I'd keep both Copp and Compher

Well it depends on if we are serious about trying to make the playoffs next year or we are tanking. First things first, I’d trade for marchment from Dallas, they need to cut cap space and he would be very useful. I still think trading Larkin for something like Byfield + will be better long term. If it were me I’d probably look at doing that. I’d add gavrikov in the off season to high money but shorter term. I’d make a trade for a physical third pairing defenseman. And I’d trade compher, buyout tarasenko, trade holl with a pick or bury him in the AHL. Run Gustafson as the 7d. Add mazur to the 4th line, bring up Danielson to be 3c or wing on the third line. And I’d give wallinder a shot. Lastly I’d re-sign Kane if he was willing to take a pay cut, he’s too injured for 6 million.

One solid top four defensemen from outside of the organization
One solid bottom pair defensemen from outside of the organization
One top six forward from outside of the organization (preferably someone with some size)
Buy-out/trade/burry the spare parts on forward and defense
Aim to add three or four kids to the roster (ASP + some forwards)

If successful with the above, try to find a truly good, physical bottom six forward

Honestly, my goal is to get those kids into the lineup, get them experienced, and hope to make a real push the following year. If they play well, though, I don't think the playoffs are impossible.

Brad Marchand has the biggest nose in the league.

Just wanted to register my objection against "just play the kids" mantra.

One of the more important aspects of signing the vets is that the prospects coming up in the system aren't "entitled" to the roster spot. That said, they should be given a fair chance to beat out those vets for the spot. Being guaranteed a spot is not good for the vets just as it's not good for prospects.

To that end, I am pondering the following question. If the vets we have signed are truly as awful as we portray them on this forum, how come they haven't been beaten out of their spots? Starting to think the issue is not Compher or Tarasenko being bad, but that we were giving a bit too much rope to our "younger" guys like Veleno, Berggren and Rassmussen.

On D on the other hand, I think dressing Holl 73 games is bizarre.

Dude the vets on this team f***ing suck. They’re the only players acting entitled because their contracts make them too hard to move.

Kasper, AlJo, Mazur, Danielson, Lombardi and Soderblom would all have been better than the shit we had playing big minutes the first half.

need a top 6 forward, need a top 9 forward and 2 top 4 dmen, ajo is not a top 4 dman, he just a place holder till a real top 4 dman comes, ajo is a 5/6 dman. and then hope Ed becomes a top 4 man soon.

If you perform Step 1, none of those players in Step 2 will take your money. Then the kids will regularly get their teeth kicked in, the team will be bottom 5, and there will be absolutely no point in watching for at least another 2-3 years.

And then Detroit will get screwed in the lottery once again, and they'll have nothing to show for all that mess.
That logic is not logical. Players go where the money’s significantly better 98% of the time.

Serious note since this is for fun and just an opinion.

Buyout Tarasenko
Resign Kane/Soderblom/Albertson/Berggren
Sign Marner.

Dimitri Buchelnikov – (C) Dylan Larkin – Lucas Raymond
Amadeus Lombardi – Marco Kasper– Mitch Marner
Alex DeBrincat – (A) Andrew Copp – Patrick Kane
Michael Rasmussen – J.T. Compher – Elmer Soderblom
Austin Watson
Jonatan Berggren

Ben Chiarot – Moritz Seider
Simon Edvinsson – Albert Johansson
Erik Gustavsson – Axel Sandin-Pellikka
Justin Holl

Cam Talbot
Petr Mrazek

Right now to Yzerman's credit we have rebuilt substantial parts of the farm system. Let me propose an alternative, if he had left one spot open on the roster this season (for some crowd stopped carrying three goalies does this easily) up front for an open competition. You keep Kasper out of camp, granted he came up after five games. But let's use next year as an example. you leave one available top 9 spot open, that is there for Lombardi, Danielson, and Mazur to compete for. I believe Mazur might be out of waivers and he can play the fourth line, but you let the winner in camp play. Say he doesn't get it done in October, you call up the other guy to see what he offers. By Thanksgiving you can say hey we gave the kids games, they didn't get it done. They get stashed in the AHL and you go get a veteran or player off waivers.

The guy understands the NHL game and has things to work on, you have created good internal competition. If they both prove not ready you have options around the league still to address the situation. You also have put some of their value on tape and in front of NHL scouts. When we had one or two prospects to bank on sure, but we need to see some of these guys before like Aljo they are being scratched at 24 and still taking a while to break in.

Now if you actually establish a playoff team you can get back into the veteran slow cook method. But our farm system is bursting at the seams, we broke in a few young players this year and a lot of them brought more than the vets. I understand this is a men's league and there is transition, but I think you need to push the young guys and the vets in a little different way, especially with a top 10 farm system and a team that has struggled to make the playoffs.
