How did Kevin Weekes know Columbus had dropped to #3 BEFORE the card was flipped??????

All Weber could do then was sit and wait. And wait. And wait. The draw began at 7:30 p.m. but it wasn't announced to the public until close to 9:00 p.m.

"We sat there for about an hour and a half which was the longest hour and a half of my life but great day for the organization and our fans," he said, describing the thoughts that were going through his mind.

"It's a weird combination of emotions where you're super excited, you have this information and you want to start calling people but they've taken your phone, you want to start tweeting but they've taken your phone. You want to start sharing the good news but you can't."

As mentioned, the actual drawing is done in advance of the TV reveal. This gives the TV production people time to get graphics ready. Unfortunately in 2019, NBCSN screwed up and displayed a brief image of NJD/NYR/CHI being the winners before they went through the whole reveal. As part of the broadcast, Weekes either already knew the order or was being fed info and he simply screwed up.

Because the lottery is done a few hours before the results show airs and they wrote out a script for him to read the picks off of.

He read the third pick blurb when they were meant to go to commercial.
The lottery was actually done at 6:45 PM

IN THEORY - Only the people locked in the secure drawing room know the results and can not leave that room until Bill Daly flips the card.

Weekes was tipped off by someone in that 'secured' room which is simply a bad look by the NHL.

An even worse look was the NHL having live feeds from watch parties in Chicago and Anaheim BUT not Columbus.

I really want to believe in the integrity of the NHL but tonight shook me.

The TV Production people have to be given the info as well to get everything ready. I think we're making a mountain of a mole hill in Weekes screwing up on live TV. They had the Columbus feed at the beginning of the broadcast fwiw.

Mhmm... about that....

Tonight shook you about what? That you don't understand that this isn't live?

It's literally staged for viewing (gaffe) convenience, the lotto draft was done already. Just like every year when they call the balls out...

EDIT: Just to clarify. They knew the team order, not that the lotto draft itself was done at that particular time.

Why are you also assuming that it's Weekes that messed up and that he was making those comments live? My guess would be that those voice overs he made were done pre-show and someone messed up and played it before they were supposed to.

The timing that he'd have to have for it to be that seamless live is just not happening.

There’s not much to get. TV is a production and the flipping of cards is a performance. He and other live commentators for the special were given the list in advance to have basic factoids lined up and he accidentally jumped the gun, as the draft already happened.

Not really much to go from here other than annoyance at botching a simple broadcast.

edit: or potentially more humorously, their broadcast booth was given the list, the teleprompter accidentally typed too far ahead, and Weekes pulled a Ron Burgundy and just read what was in front of him without even thinking about it.
