How Did Colorado Pass Edmonton?

They had so many more first picks than us.

Higher draft choices don't help if you have no plan or foundation in place.
Avs had a plan, got EJ and Varly in trades to get vital pieces during the rebuild, and frankly took some risk in doing that, but just sitting on your hands and only drafting well with your best pick doesn't lead you very far. We have drafted relatively well (e.g. Barrie and ROR) outside the 1st round.

It is quite simple actually. The fact that Edmonton still hasn't got a 1st-pairing defender or a starting goalie (jury still out for Scrivens) is quite shocking actually, considering how many good trading pieces they have had.

They actually got worse players, especially TEAM players. Hall, Eberle, RNH and Yakupov are not as good as Duchene, Landeskog, MacKinnon and ROR for example. Hall is their #1 guy, but most of these guys are really weak defensively. It doesn't help that they have one of the worst defense's in NHL.

Such a travesty for all my Oiler friends. Their hopes were so high.

Personally I just enjoy their failure. They(fans) seem to hate Avalanche for some reason, so I hate them back... I don't really understand it though. They are probably jealous, that's what I believe it is.

If you put EJ and Varly on Edmonton, and put Ference and Dubnyk on the Avs, you would probably see a flip in position. Not the the extent of the Oilers winning their division, but they would probably at least be a wild card team.

the oilers also don't have depth. they have to hope the kid line carries the offence. they are slowly assembling a team but still think they need one more year before they can push for the playoffs. they also are terrible at drafting outside the 1st which doesn't help.

Coaching is a big part too. Edmonton needs to figure out what their long term solution is there.

I think Dallas Eakins has the potential to be a good NHL coach...his "problem" (if you want to call it that) is that he is expecting all of his players to show effort on both sides of the ice. So with players like Taylor Hall, where it's clear that he doesn't really care to play defense (which I don't think he'd be a bad defender if he made an effort) and since he's the golden boy in Edmonton you're going to get the type of crap they got last year.

I see nothing wrong with Eakins wanting all players to play the whole game (offense and defense), and even if it's the star player who's not you can't let them do that otherwise you're setting a bad example.

No it's probably not Eakins per se but I'd like to think if they had a coach like Roy it would have made a difference.

I'm feeling bad karma by having this thread. It's good discussion tho ;)

Avs were more aggressive in trading to fix holes (EJ, Varlamov) as well having better young two-way players (Landeskog and O'Reilly mainly).

The people running Edmonton don't have the slightest idea of how to build an actual team. Their full on rebuild (I classify that as their first #1 pick) started with a #1LW instead of a #1C. Then when they had the chance to get a #1D prospect, they pass on them for another wing. Which both of those decisions are fine if you make the moves to fill those voids, but they have done neither. They didn't address it in the draft, nor did they through trade. Combine that with the types of players they drafted are all offense and skill and no defense, you have a recipe for disaster.

Imagine if they had just picked Seguin, Landy, and Murray at #1 instead of Hall, RNH, and Yakupov. Kulikov/DeHann over MPS might also be one you could throw in.

To be fair you could say they passed on a #1 winger to draft a #1 center.

Hall-RNH in a year or two is probably a wash to Landeskog-Seguin.

It's pretty simple actually. We took the steps necessary to try to field a competitive team, whereas Edmonton didn't really take the steps outside of having high draft picks.

We made secondary moves like, trading for Varlamov, which was a huge risk, but we took the chance. Trading for EJ another huge risk. We signed a bunch of secondary players to add to our depth.

We finally hired a coach worth a damn, who can actually get the best out of his players, something Edmonton has yet to find.

Edmonton kind of got stuck with a one track mind drafting similar players in Hall, RNH and Yakupov who are all are finesse players that play similar games. We got Duchene, MacKinnon and Landeskog. Who are all different type players. Duchene is a creative center, MacKinnon is a shoot first center and Landeskog is a power winger. Plus we've gotten big contributions from our non-first round picks like O'Reilly and Barrie. Edmonton on the other hand has had little help from draft picks outside the first round. You could argue that Marincin and maybe Lander have given them some but they are nowhere near the contributions that ROR and Barrie have given us.

Honestly it really comes down to one thing our management team/scouts did a better job of creating a team. We didn't just tank every year and hope for the number 1 pick, then do nothing else. We went out and tried to re-build the right way by taking some risks and getting the right players in here.

Hall-RNH in a year or two is probably a wash to Landeskog-Seguin.

I don't agree with that at all. The concern about Seguin in Edmonton is if he would have matured there or not. Seguin will (is a fringe now) be a top 10 C in the NHL. RNH won't touch that level (serious debate if he can ever handle the #1C load). Landy and Hall are similar level players... Hall is better offensively, Landy is better everywhere else.

Colorado has been more proactive with player movement. The cherry on top is Nathan MacKinnon's instant stardom.

Five things:

#1 C - Last year we had two, they had one possibility. Going forward, we have two top 15 centers with one who could be top 3-4 in a couple years.

#1 D - EJ embraced this role fully last year. They're still lacking although now they have some possibilities to fill that role.

Goalie - Varly is better than Dubnyk (or now Scrivens). Varly has talent to remain one of the best at the position.

Diversity - We have a better combination of grit and veterans to mix with our youth and scoring ability.

Coach - Praise Roy! We just wouldn't have made it come together last year, at least like we did, if he wasn't there to guide the team.

This is the right answer. Oilers put alot of stock into thinking Dubnyk was going to be their number 1 for a long time when they drafted him. He turned out to be a major fail

Trust me once they get their guy like we did its going to be unbearable around these parts. Hall this and Yakupov that. Not looking forward to it.

EJ, Varly, Barrie, and ROR. In other words, better drafting and better trades. You can't win with number one picks alone.
