Seven Years Later - Sabres Ex-Captain Rivet Remembers The Flight 3407 Game - Friday, February 12 - WGR550.com

It has been exactly seven years since Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence but a sick feeling still comes over Craig Rivet every time a plane flies his house. He lives less than a five minute drive away from where the plane crashed and killed 49 passengers and one person on the ground. The unmistakable wall of sound created by an aircraft overhead reminds the former Buffalo Sabre captain of the pain the community endured. It also reminds him of the moment in his career of which he is most proud and of the night that helped the city heal after a day of shock and sadness.

At 10:17 PM on February 12, 2009, Sabres goalie Patrick Lalime’s brother in-law was unloading his truck, having just arrived for a visit to see Lalime and the Sabres play on the 13th against the San Jose Sharks. He witnessed the plane crashing into a house next door. Defenseman Teppo Numminen, widely considered one of the best blueliners to ever play, looked out his window and saw a red sky.

They pieced together details – that a flight from Newark, New Jersey, had been cleared for landing at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport when it went into aerodynamic stall and never recovered. It landed five miles from the end of the runway at 6038 Long Street.

Thanks for this comprehensive info. I knew what a few of these guys were doing, but some of these names I'd forgotten about.

Poor Tsygurov. He can't be that old.

Still weird seeing him in that Sharks sweater. Crazy that he's only 26 games from surpassing his GP with the Sabres with FLA.

Season in Russia Became Nightmare for South Buffalo's Tim Kennedy

Former Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Kennedy thought he knew what he was getting into when he signed to play for Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik, a Russian team located in a closed town – seriously, you need permission to visit – and led by a Soviet-era coach.

“I knew that going in that it was the worst city and I heard that the coach was really tough, but you figure how bad can it be and how bad can the coach be?” Kennedy said last week. “You get there and it was like my worst nightmare.”
