How Amazing Is It That Gretzky Has More Assists than Anyone Has Total Points?

This might be the most mind-boggling career stat in any sport. You eliminate every goal he's scored(And that alone is the most in NHL history) and he'd still be the all-time point scorer in NHL history.

Everyone has that moment when they get perspective of just how mind-bogglingly dominant Gretzky was

It was a lot of fun to watch, especially his Oilers and Kings days. You expected a goal and a assist every night he played, if not more.

maybe the fact that he played on stacked team probably helped him a little

It really is baffling when you think of it. And that's the fun part. A couple times a year I'll just come to the realization of how crazy his stats are. I mean say it to yourself. Not only are his assists alone, more than anyone in points, but then you add the most career goals to that already massive assists total.

Mind=blown

On a side note, I still think the most impressive sports stat is Gordie Howe's 20 consecutive years of finishing in the top 5 for scoring. That **** really is cray

He can thank half of his records to the fact that Mario played under 1000 games in his career.

Another thing about Gretzky that amazed me, when TSn had an interview with him for his 5oth birthday a couple of years ago, Gretzky was crapping on himself for getting 92 goals and "Blowing-it" by not reaching 100 goals in a single season.

When you're disappointed in yourself you finished with 92 goals, that's something.

Gretzky got to 100,200,300,400,500,600,700 and 800 goals faster than anyone else (in GP) including Lemieux. Even giving the injured Lemieux the benefit of the doubt Gretzky still wins.

Even at Lemieux's best Gretzky still topped his PPG and point totals. Lemieux's 160 in 60 (often considered his best year) was topped by Gretzky's 175 in 60.

Lemieux was a comparable goalscorer (I personally have Lemieux as the better goalscorer), but Gretzky was on another level for playmaking. Of the top ten APG seasons Gretzky has the first seven.

I have also yet to hear a valid argument for Lemieux over Gretzky all-time.

He got 212 points in a year playing with rookies/second liners; basically doubling the next best on his team in the process.
Exactly.

Gretzky- 92 goals/212 points
Anderson- 38 goals/105 points
Coffey- 29 goals/89 points
Messier- 50 goals/88 points
Kurri- 32 goals/86 points

Clearly Gretzky put up all those points because Messier and Anderson were on the second line. They were really padding his stats from the bench. Even though teams were putting best shutdown players out against Gretzky's line and if anything, having a 2nd line that was good probably took away from his ice time.

...and obviously he had 120 assists that season because he had Kurri and his 32 goals on his line :sarcasm:

I honestly can't believe some people look at a 92 goal/212 point season and try to take away from it by bringing up linemates. Kurri, Messier, Anderson and Coffey were all great players...but they weren't even close to being on Gretzky's level.

Mike Krushelnyski was a guy that could barely hit 20 goals or 60 points some seasons and he had a 43 goal/88 point season as the third man on the Gretzky/Kurri line.

They don't call him the Great One for nothing. I don't think anyone is coming close to any of his major records. Those will stand the test of time.

Plus it's just really hard to compare generations. We don't know how Sid would have done if he had played in the days of Gretzky but I'm willing to bet it would be lower than 99's.

Gretzky padded his own stats on the bench a couple of times.

I've seen him get credited with an assist even though he wasn't on the ice.

Here's a real interesting one:

Only three times has a player hit 150 points without a teammate scoring at least 100.

Once each by Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Steve Yzerman. Given that tidbit, one has to wonder how much better Yzerman's stats would have been if he had offensive help during his prime.

yeah, didn't he have almost no one when he got traded to LA?

He only outscored Nicholls by 18 points, and he finished behind Yzerman in ES points (Lemieux-Yzerman-Gretzky were 1-2-3 at ES with one point separating each rank).
