Hot Take Would You Extend Stollarz Right Now if You Could

We have 2 great goaltenders a disission will have to made next season .
We need a top 2 center , one of these goaltenders will bring us assets for a center.

Question is the money he wants and if the two goalies we have with the Marlies can make the leap. If it’s a platoon situation and both are making 4-5 ish then sure.

Again we need to worry about Knies

Then what are we doing regarding Marner and JT

If they buy in to take less and Matthews isn’t asking for 16 million then it’s doable.

I think the elephant in the room will be McDavid. If the Kings knock out EDM will he say it’s time to move on? If so you have to be ready!

Stolarz is 31 and has had extensive injury problems over his career, he's also broken down this season

He isn't somebody to be giving a mid to long term extention, I'd give him next season then let him walk and see where Hildeby and AA are or try to get the next decent young tandem goaltender in UFA
may even be aTDL flip next year if Woll has taken the net

The most fascinating player this year on the team.

Stolarz needs that big playoff run of course but he still feels like one of the most underrated players in hockey, even on this board.

He is the 4th Leafs goalie in history to lead the league in save% after Plante, Gamble and Bower. If he didn't miss that chunk of time getting that corrective surgery, we would probably be talking about him and Helle as the Vezina co-favorites. It's not like Stolarz is playing behind top tier team D either. Both the eye test and stats say he has been spectacular. Stolarz has also been pretty much a top level goalie his whole career and outplayed Bob last season in the backup role.

Despite all the smooth brains obsessed with Marner and Rielly (both with respectable to great playoff numbers the last few years), this team has run Campbell and Samsonov as our starting goalies against Price/Bob/Vasy/Swayman. We seem to be getting a helluva upgrade to combat the goalie gauntlet we never really had an answer to.

It just feels like we traded a 4th liner for a 1st line player and nobody is really talking about it is all.

I could be wrong of course and Stolarz could sink in the pressure (or get injured) but on the surface, he seems like a gamechanger no?

So many people talk about Logan Thompson (and his .910 save%) being crucial to Washington's chances but Stolarz still gets talked about like he's part of a tandem. Just look at the playoffs goalie thread on the main boards.

Fact is, the Leafs are going into the playoffs with one the best starters in the league and one of the best backups in the league. Now that feels weird to say....

I agree with all this. No guarantees and we'll see what happens, but IMO the play of Stolarz is by far the number one reason to feel optimistic about our playoff chances.

I'd wait for this image again this time doing it with Toronto instead of Florida last year.

Kind of surprised he didn't get the Conn Smythe last year.

Will be very curious to see how he does in the playoffs.

I have been very impressed with him, has bailed the team out from some poor defensive play this season.

So does Woll.

I think there is a possibility for leveraging but man oh man would we'd have to get it right.

My preference is to keep Stolarz and Woll in a new larger cap era. But if we have the opportunity, if we have an offer we can't refuse, we at least examine the option.
It would work out either way. Remember all of those great Justin Pogge years?

use ALL of Tavares $$ on Knies and Stolarz

JT can sign for the Min or bye-bye

Leafs future and his choice
He was just shy of 40 goals and a PPG this season. You obviously just don't like him, so why even sign him for league min if he's such a problem? Wouldn't you want him on the team for a hometown discount relative to his actual value on the market?

Well that was truly one of my low points as a Leafs fan because I was a Rask fan from his WJ performance. And whenever I thought of the draft I PRAYED we’d draft him. Couldn’t believe we did!

While at a hotel eating a late breakfast, caught the trade for Raycroft and felt shocked and nauseated.

I’m all for improving the club and have a few proposals out there that were a touch more modest than let’s say one which was not. This to say I err on the side of caution.

Again, strong preference is to keep the tandem in tact. But if there was a Fuhr-type situation where you’re getting an Andreychuk and Puppa, I think that has to at least be examined, mindful of the Raycroft/Pogge possibilities.

Like so many other things in life it depends.

Mainly on how much and for how long. I thought the Woll extension was questionable. But it's looking like a pretty reasonable deal.

If Stolarz wants something like that it's fair.

His play this year was exceptional. If he repeats that next year he'll be able to command big money. Signing him now would be a smart move if they truly believe his numbers are for real.

The Leafs haven't had good goaltending the entire Matthews era.

It's been a sore spot for years... decades. It would be nice to see them secure that position for what's left of the Matthews contract. A three year deal would be optimal if they can do it at a reasonable price.

So long as Stolarz doesn't fancy himself the second coming of Tim Thomas they should be able to settle on something.

It also seems like a situation in which the team could probably get them for a medium term for medium money.

Having two solid goaltenders really strengthens the defence and lessens the need to have that high end defencemen.

This is the first time since the Belfour days that I have zero concerns about goaltending heading into game 1
Not sure what the cost would be for Stolarz. He outperformed Woll by more than a little bit. who signed for $3 x $3.66 and he outperformed Blackwood who got 5 x $5.25. I dont know what medium money is to you but I don't see an argument for him signing under $4M. He is .918 in 143 NHL games so I am thinking unless he gets hurts again he is $5M to a bunch of clubs. I hope they can make it work with him.

I think you wait until the summer at least, goalies are sometimes the most difficult to gauge how consistent they can be on a year to year basis.

We are all pretty high at one point on Jack Campbell and he ended up getting that 5x5 from the Oilers and it was a disaster. Bad example, I know, but you get the point. I do really like the tandem of him and Woll though, and would like at least 2 more seasons of it.

He’s so calm in there. It soothes me and calms me down watching him and probably has the same effect on his team. No big reactions, little desperation, just positionally solid with great reads. He’s pretty much the opposite of Samsonov

Love me some Stolarz

This play should have been ..

Anthony Stolarz Penalty
===================
2 minutes for cross checking.
2 minutes for roughing
2 minutes for slashing
2 minutes for hooking
2 minutes for interference,

10 minutes total on the play.

vs

Ridly Greig .. 5 minute major for being a rat & 5 minutes for attempt to injure from game #1.

They're allowed to extend him this summer and I'm sure they will.

Neither Woll or Stolarz will ever be a 55-60+ game starter so having both locked long term would finally solidify the pipes for years to come.

Here’s hoping for a 2 year extension at least which would lock up both our goalies through the end of Matthews’ current deal

I have to be honest. I don’t even think I heard of him until we signed him. I never really paid attention to Florida that much.

What an absolute find. Incredible
