may even be aTDL flip next year if Woll has taken the netStolarz is 31 and has had extensive injury problems over his career, he's also broken down this season
He isn't somebody to be giving a mid to long term extention, I'd give him next season then let him walk and see where Hildeby and AA are or try to get the next decent young tandem goaltender in UFA
I agree with all this. No guarantees and we'll see what happens, but IMO the play of Stolarz is by far the number one reason to feel optimistic about our playoff chances. The most fascinating player this year on the team.
Stolarz needs that big playoff run of course but he still feels like one of the most underrated players in hockey, even on this board.
He is the 4th Leafs goalie in history to lead the league in save% after Plante, Gamble and Bower. If he didn't miss that chunk of time getting that corrective surgery, we would probably be talking about him and Helle as the Vezina co-favorites. It's not like Stolarz is playing behind top tier team D either. Both the eye test and stats say he has been spectacular. Stolarz has also been pretty much a top level goalie his whole career and outplayed Bob last season in the backup role.
Despite all the smooth brains obsessed with Marner and Rielly (both with respectable to great playoff numbers the last few years), this team has run Campbell and Samsonov as our starting goalies against Price/Bob/Vasy/Swayman. We seem to be getting a helluva upgrade to combat the goalie gauntlet we never really had an answer to.
It just feels like we traded a 4th liner for a 1st line player and nobody is really talking about it is all.
I could be wrong of course and Stolarz could sink in the pressure (or get injured) but on the surface, he seems like a gamechanger no?
So many people talk about Logan Thompson (and his .910 save%) being crucial to Washington's chances but Stolarz still gets talked about like he's part of a tandem. Just look at the playoffs goalie thread on the main boards.
Fact is, the Leafs are going into the playoffs with one the best starters in the league and one of the best backups in the league. Now that feels weird to say....
I'd wait for this image again this time doing it with Toronto instead of Florida last year.

It would work out either way. Remember all of those great Justin Pogge years? So does Woll.
I think there is a possibility for leveraging but man oh man would we'd have to get it right.
My preference is to keep Stolarz and Woll in a new larger cap era. But if we have the opportunity, if we have an offer we can't refuse, we at least examine the option.
He was just shy of 40 goals and a PPG this season. You obviously just don't like him, so why even sign him for league min if he's such a problem? Wouldn't you want him on the team for a hometown discount relative to his actual value on the market?use ALL of Tavares $$ on Knies and Stolarz
JT can sign for the Min or bye-bye
Leafs future and his choice
Well that was truly one of my low points as a Leafs fan because I was a Rask fan from his WJ performance. And whenever I thought of the draft I PRAYED we’d draft him. Couldn’t believe we did!It would work out either way. Remember all of those great Justin Pogge years?
Not sure what the cost would be for Stolarz. He outperformed Woll by more than a little bit. who signed for $3 x $3.66 and he outperformed Blackwood who got 5 x $5.25. I dont know what medium money is to you but I don't see an argument for him signing under $4M. He is .918 in 143 NHL games so I am thinking unless he gets hurts again he is $5M to a bunch of clubs. I hope they can make it work with him.It also seems like a situation in which the team could probably get them for a medium term for medium money.
Having two solid goaltenders really strengthens the defence and lessens the need to have that high end defencemen.
This is the first time since the Belfour days that I have zero concerns about goaltending heading into game 1
They're allowed to extend him this summer and I'm sure they will.
Neither Woll or Stolarz will ever be a 55-60+ game starter so having both locked long term would finally solidify the pipes for years to come.
