Hot Take Would You Extend Stollarz Right Now if You Could

Looking at this thread from November, how many people would now sign him if they could?

I’m scared of what his price is going to be when we get there.

Lock him up.

How many years have we struggled with goaltending? Many, many years. Even Freddy Anderson was unreliable. When you find something good - invest. Keep it. Don't mess it up. Woll is good, but injury-prone. Regardless of age, there's no indication that Stollarz is slowing down. The opposite, actually.

Nope. Let him help the team win the Cup this season or next, and then let him walk if his contract wouldn't fit. There is no need to spend sizable cap space on goalies.
How can we say there’s no need to spend sizeable cap on goalies yet complain that we always face 10M, vezina calibre goalies in the playoffs who carry their teams to the finals? Not you specifically, but very common excuse on these boards.

I do agree that ideally you’re able to find someone like stolarz who is under the radar and get them for cheap, but how long have we been trying that for? It’s been years of failed goalie after failed goalie so it’s much easier said than done.

Top 4 goalies this year with xgoals against (46 goalies total, min 1500 minutes played):

1. Helle: .924 (xGA: 2.69/60)
2. Stolarz: .923 (xGA: 3.00/60)
3. Kuemper: .920 (xGA: 2.58/60)
4. Vasy: .920 (xGA: 2.62/60)
(next at .914)

Stolarz missing that chunk of time takes him out of the Vezina race but he has absolutely been one of the best goalies in the league this season. Considering the weaker team D in front of him, arguably the best goaltending we have had in net in decades during a regular season. Is he a playoff goalie though? Havnt had one since Belfour either.

Top 3 goalies since the start of the 2021 season:

1. Ullmark: .921
2. Stolarz: .918
2. Helle: .918

He's just been consistently good for years now and is finally getting the chance to run with a team. Injuries and playing behind elite starters have played a part but lets hope he stays healthy moving forward and gives us a chance the next 2 seasons. If he has a great run this playoffs, signing talk will heat up almost immediately but he has to have that run.

Ugh

Hey, not gonna be a Matthews era Leafs playoffs without facing great goaltending. That being said, Ullmarks numbers are skewed by that one huge Vezina season and he was part of the collapse against the Panthers.

Leafs having starter Stolarz in net instead of Campbell/Samsonov feels more important than who we are facing.

At his age he’s going to look for a payday, can’t blame him.
I don’t think it will be here.

If we had a run and he was the goalie...I could see them jettisoning Woll but let's worry about it when/if it gets here.

Management may have been told not to sign long-term. They may not be back. You trade all those picks plus prospects and then lose? Oh oh

I'd try to keep him AND Woll. The league has been trending toward platoon goalies for a long time, and we've finally got 2 good ones.

Stolarz is worth 5 million or more. Anything under that and I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

We saw a number of goalies get $8 mil this past offseason, and the salary cap went up quite a bit. Stolarz is likely going to want to cash in at this point as well. I think it's a bit premature to decide what to do with him, he's been good, but is still injury prone.

We also have Woll, Hildeby and AA in the system. If Stolarz can play well in the playoffs, and show some reliability next year, I have no issues with extending him, but I'm not looking to spend $8 mil. Let's give him more time, and decide from there. If he's willing to go $5 mil or under, I'd consider it, before the calendar rolls to 2026.

The paradox is he has serious worth on the trade market next season on a low salary
So does Woll.

I think there is a possibility for leveraging but man oh man would we'd have to get it right.

My preference is to keep Stolarz and Woll in a new larger cap era. But if we have the opportunity, if we have an offer we can't refuse, we at least examine the option.

I'd do it in a heartbeat now. You'd still be able to get him on a relative bargain. That goes away if he has a big playoff run and/or plays well again next season.
