Cool interview. Had no idea how smart off the rink he was and pretty cool about his brother being even smarter and wanting to be a doctor.
Not sure Josh liked the 'you don't look like an NHL defenceman in your street clothes' comment, or that he looks still like a little kid. Scott Oake can be awkward at times.

Agree it was a bit cringey at the start

I'm sure it's true... I was just looking for clarification as on the surface it doesn't quite make sense.

What makes someone RFA vs UFA is age and service.

If someone is not signed as an RFA they are UFA but only until they are signed. The rules revert back to age and sevice afterwards. You can think of it as temporarily a UFA if that makes sense.

But as Evil Little pointed out (I went back and checked to confirm), Perreault was a year older than I thought he was so he doesn’t work as an example, but Michael Hutchinson did. Both Brossoit and Griffith right now would be examples of that on the current Jets.

It’s just abnormal for a RFA to be given up on by one team without a trade and excel well enough to be both kept in place for their next team and notable to fans.

Fair enough. It should be relatively straightforward to add age and NHL experience to the "context" variables to see: a) how reliable usual metrics are to predict future performance for young rookies and; b) how different players compare adjusted for age / experience. All I am saying is that without those analyses, it's hard to fully assess the weight that should be given to current performance in relation to roster decisions, since at least part of the consideration relates to an estimate of future performance.

Like when I noted how good Petan’s results in his first two seasons were away from Thorburn et al.:

"The results are probably somewhat unsustainable. This would essentially place Petan as a top 30 forward in the NHL. Not impossible, but also highly not probable. However, they are still meaningful."

Similarly the results will likely improve with Lemieux (and Virtanen), but starting off so poorly is still meaningful...

And it was all a dig at Virtanen and Canuck fans than at Lemieux anyways...
