He said the Kings are going to go hard after Iginla on 7/5.

My question: With what cap room?

For fun. Obviously Dean and Darryl would kill to get the guy on our team, though doing so is next to impossible without us creating holes in other places outside of Iginla taking a discount, but if we sign him to fair value, we'd look something like this:

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
Dustin Brown ($3.175m) / Anze Kopitar ($6.800m) / Justin Williams ($3.650m)
Jarome Iginla ($4.500m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.273m)
Matt Frattin ($0.488m) / Jarret Stoll ($3.250m) / Tyler Toffoli ($0.870m)
Dwight King ($0.750m) / Colin Fraser ($0.825m) / Trevor Lewis ($0.800m)
DEFENSEMEN
Willie Mitchell ($3.500m) / Drew Doughty ($7.000m)
Robyn Regehr ($3.000m) / Slava Voynov ($4.167m)
Jake Muzzin ($0.750m) / Matt Greene ($2.950m)
GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Quick ($5.800m)
Ben Scrivens ($0.550m)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,846,894; BONUSES: $135,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $588,106

Would have to say good bye to half our RFA's, unless we could stuff them in the minors, which is a waste and gamble. Would likely have to get rid of King and replace him with Clifford, and we couldn't carry a backup player outside of Kozun which would put us right up there, but would be legal.

The trick up our sleeve that would actually allow us to pull this off is Willie Mitchell and our compliance buyout. If Mitchell should retire or if we decide to use our buyout, suddenly we could afford him, however, we would then have to decide on Scuderi, if he comes back for the same price, then we would look like:

Which does give us cap space and players eligible to trade to try to rectify the hole, but it would be a toss-up. We'd likely have to make another Regehr trade and deal Amart + 2nd for a mid range defenseman.

If the price tag is 4.5 million like you have slotted DL better be having nothing to do with this, talk about handicapping the team...

And Muzzin being in the top 4 on defense is just plain scary.

$4.5 is just the fair value that I see. He could get even more via free agency from non-contenders, though we were on his trade list and I am sure he would be willing to take a discount to play for a contender, just dunno which one. If he signed for less, then we could make something happen, but I am picturing the worst case scenario or the max that we could pay.

I would suspect that Amart would be forced up there over Muzzin. Each of those is just mainly to show who all we can stuff in there, if you're looking at that second one, I am sure Scuderi or Regehr would be up playing with Doughty or Voynov :P

Mitchell would have to be deemed completely healthy before next Thursday for the Kings to be able to use a compliance buyout on him. Although, if he's completely healthy, why would the Kings buy him out? Also, since he's a 35+ contract, I think he counts on the cap even if he retires. The only way the Kings get his cap hit is if they trade him, which I don't think anyone would do right now, or put him on LTIR, which I think can only be done before the season starts, and won't help the Kings over the summer.

I was wondering about that, I guess we're screwed then. Outside of just going over the cap and trying to bury him using LTIR at the start of the season, though if he were suddenly to become healthy, we would be at the mercy of the league and would have to pay to become compliant again.

I'll assume the tweet of Mitchell skating was a calculated thing done by him and his agent. Shows the Kings he is healthy and the rest of the GM's the same just in case the Kings buy him out. Given the Kings style of play and his contract Mitchell is a better fit for the Kings than Iginla. That said Lombardi isn't done with this team. I still think you're gonna see a few trades and he usually surprises-the Kings may not have cap space now but that doesn't mean that will be the case on July 5th.

I forget who, but I actually read that the Kings are "very interested" in Iginla from someone reputable. LeBrun, maybe?

I think there is definitely interest, and DL will likely give his agent a call. As soon as the asking price hits $4mil though the kings will be out of the running.

I don't think there is any real doubt that we would be interested in having Iginla on the team. That is I don't think there is any doubt that Dean and Daryl would be interested in having him on the team. They got RR here and its widely known that Iggy and Daryl have a Miagi/Danielsan thing goin on as well.

Does it make sense? No, no it doesn't. Iggy will get more from another team.

Say it is true that the Kings are interested in Iginla. If that is the case, then somebody is going (the popular choice being Stoll), and Richards will have to be slotted as the third center on the depth chart.

So what could a lineup with Iginla look like? I'm guessing something like this...

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Frattin-Carter-Iginla
Clifford-Richards-Toffoli
King-Lewis-Nolan
Fraser

I think I'd be just as content with Carter on RW and Richards as the 2nd C. Not sure if Iginla has much left to offer at this point in his career.
