Horachek - worst debut as mid-season replacement?

Maybe this should be in the history of hockey section but has a coach coming in as a mid-season replacement ever been so much worse than his predecessor as Horachek has been replacing Carlyle? I ask this out of genuine interest not just as a way of mocking the Leafs total collapse...

Seriously, its like night and day...

Carlyle: 40-21-16-3

Horachek: 13-1-11-1

Leafs were 2-7 (with one of the wins in the SO) in the 9 games before Horachek took over, so it's not as if they suddenly cratered.

We were in full out skydive when Carlyle was let go and Horachek just hasn't been able to change that. Certainly doesn't mean he's been good, but it's not near as bad as the records in the OP suggest.

It's an interesting thing. You can tell, especially over the last four or five games or so, that morale is completely in the toilet. They started to do things right once Horacheck came in, but either didn't get the luck or just looked outright uncomfortable.

Now it looks like they've given up, and their play is reflecting that.

At least Rielly has looked better than he did under Carlyle. Kadri too (although it's a damn shame he's spending so much time playing with Clarkson).

Why didn't they name Spott interim? I thought he was considered more a more likely candidate for a head coaching job. I mean we've already witnessed a Horachek system in Florida, and it looked not much better then what's happening in Leaf land these days.

To me it looks like Carlyle has been somewhat redeemed. Maybe if they kept him they would have bounced back by now, and maybe streakiness comes from the makeup of the roster and not so much the coach.

What is his record with Florida and Toronto combined? I think he probably has accumulated less points than Buffalo in the same time frame. I think we should give him the nickname Tank Commander Supreme, sounds like a name of a boss from a video game.

Carlyle was a terrible coach himself. He was just lucky to get what he did out of that team. Just look at the possession numbers and how he utilized his players like Orr, McLaren, Grabovski, Macarthur etc. Horachek inherited a worse team and midseason too. What's Carlyle's excuse?

If people question the coaching as far as why the Leafs are struggling then I don't know what to tell you. It's just a bad team, no matter who's coaching. Put Babcock behind the bench and the result would be similar. This is a personnel problem.

they arent even a team, The Leafs are just a bunch of individuals who happen to play hockey around the same time as each other on the same nights. This years team even disgraces the Ron Wilson era.

Sometimes i wonder if they even enjoy playing.

Dave "Sparky" Allison went 2-22-1 after replacing Rick Bowness in Ottawa in the 95-96 season. Jacques Martin was named his replacement the same year. I wonder if any other team has gone through 3 coaches in one season.

Or maybe Carlyle just used tactics that he thought would give the team best chance to win the game?
Possession game doesn't seem to sink in too well with the Leafs it seems.
Just a thought.

Randy Cunneyworth did a pretty awful job with Montreal after he was handed the reins when Jacques Martin was fired. Of course, there was the whole French thing, and the fact his boss apologized to the media for having a unilingual coach, essentially throwing Cunneyworth to the wolves.

Still, he wasn't a great coach. Montreal went from being a fringe playoff team to third worst in the league under Cunneyworth. At least that got us Galchenyuk,

Leafs are falling right into what will surely be a top 5 pick that could even be top 3. You think theyre bad now? Wait until after the deadline.

While this isnt a coaching issue fully...it really does reflect badly on him.

Am I the only one in this thread confused by this?

Carlyle is a good coach. The fact that he kept that abysmal roster (especially defense) even near the playoffs is a testament to his ability.

Say what you want about his individual decisions, but he won more games than they should have.
