Vey is such a marginal player right now and should not be playing so much. Just plays so small.

Agree with everything, except for this. Actually thought he was okay tonight - and better than Kassian again. IMO he's already a comparable or better defensive player than Kassian - similar offensive impact as well. This with a fraction of the NHL experience under his belt.

Vey has looked better since being a healthy scratch IMO. Out of these 2 young forwards, it's Kassian I want to see more out of. Hasn't been moving his feet enough, nor can he figure out how to get the puck out of his own end with any consistency.

Just watched the highlights, and looks like the Canucks matched the Hawks' game tonight.

Now converting to the Church of Bosus.

Kassian brings more physicality if needed though. That alone keeps him on the roster.

Great problem to have, better than trying to find warm bodies.

Probably a little lucky to catch the Blackhawks back to back but still good for the Canucks pull out a close game. Lot to like in the team's character.

The Good

Hansen - made a point a few years ago when I said, maybe hopefully, that Hansen had aspects of Alfredsson in his game. Didn't have the touch but their skating and tenacity seemed the same. If Hansen does continues to show the improvement in his stick work and shot that he is showing lately he could become a reasonable lower case Alfredsson. Critical in making Desjardins/Linden's four line team approach work. Great game

Horvat - not just the face-offs but smarts in positioning and puck movement. Gains another step or two he is going to be elite. Word solid gets overused but best description of Horvat. Obviously here to stay.

Dorsett - showed in the playoffs last year that he is a player and continuing this year. Give Benning credit for recognizing that Dorsett had game. Needs to get re-signed ASAP.

Edler - Competing way harder around the net. Much more controlled in his game this year and applying much more smart pressure on the puck Keeps the play in front of him and moves the puck quickly.

Miller - made a couple of questionable puck handling plays but overall had a good game. Good around his crease in standing his ground and not allowing anything to get jammed in. Had no chance on the goal.

Vey - I may have to start eating my words with this player. I thought (especially early in the game) he was excellent. Showed more speed than I thought he had and was doing something useful with the puck all the time. Made some very good quick pivots to get space and create offense. Had some problems along the boards at times getting the puck out but he fought hard and gave the second and third effort all night. Very positive game for Vey. Great if he could continue to raise his game to the NHL level.

Tanev - very efficient game. Took time and space away from Hawk forwards in both the neutral and defensive zone. You wish he could produce more offense but you can see he is jumping on chances in offensive zone better. Did, along with Edler, help facilitate offense out of his own end tonight

Not so hot

One player I question in this game is Kassian. See most of the team keeping to system and working hard all the time. Seems like Kassain still goes to sleep at times and loses focus. Gets caught standing still too much and makes too many big wide swings out of the play. Needs to up his tempo and keep his feet moving. I'm watching Jensen a lot and he is a better team guy than Kassian. Also might have more talent. Desjardins most difficult task this year will be to get more out of Kassian. Would say that Kassian has missed time and thus maybe a little behind in understanding the system and patience is required. But this cannot be endless.

Also did not think Bonino or D. Sedin had their best games. Maybe ceremony interfered here.

Other thoughts

Reffing in this game was horrible. Why does the reffing in this league have to be so bad. It really isn't as hard as they make it out to be. Nice to see Henrik complain to the refs. Chicago was doing it all game and getting the calls so you needed some push back from the Canucks

Should be nothing of any discipline to Sbisa since it was apparent Kane turned into the boards.

Bieksa didn't have bad game and certainly gets the extra time from the coaches

Lol. When other teams do well, they get an "Are they for real thread?" When we do well, we get a "When will we come back down to earth?" It's already presumed that we're terrible, whereas other teams at least get some benefit of the doubt.

On the post game, Kane used the back to back as an actual excuse. Said that the hit from Sbisa should have been a penalty and it wasn't the only hit that the refs let go against them.

Kassian is a big, intimidating guy. But he's not exactly bringing a consistent physical game. Didn't see him so much as bump a Hawk tonight, or even attempt to...

For all the flack Vey is getting, I actually think his defensive game is already stronger than Kassian's. Yet Zack has had a ton more NHL experience to iron out this part of his game.

Vey is showing progression this season, and that's what you look for from rookies. He's going to be a player IMO. Just need to be patient here.

This team has a realistic shot at having at least six players with over 20G by the end of the season:

Vrbata
Hansen
Bonino
Daniel
Higgins
Burrows

We finally have secondary scoring!

Henrik's done it before too, and he's just about on pace. Should've had one tonight.

This is the first time since 2010 where the Canucks have legitimate scoring depth. I think this team can win at least 1 series.

so I do think they keep Horvat more than 9 games..........but do they sent him to WJC? because the flames surely did not do that with Sean Monahan.

Everybody talking about the Horvat line and justifiably so, but don't know if it's my imagination or not, but the other Yannick-- Weber--seems to be rejuvenated under Desjardins.....rushing the puck with aplomb and still has a bomb from the point...are we seeing him take that next step as a bonafide NHL d-man?:handclap:

On top of that, A Black Hawk posted in their GDT/PG-thread that it was a "stay classy" Canucks fan who was the OP of that "come back to earth" thread. Well, well what can a hater do but...

Yeah, Weber really pushes the pace of the game and isn't afraid to take chances. He brings the skill set this team desperately lacks from the right side and looks like he could be on the verge of breaking out into a quality, everyday defenseman. Have been watching him closely, and looks like there is something there IMO.
