No team has gone to the finals with a skater making over 9.5 million. That could change this season but having Marner at 11+ and Matthews at likely 14+ will cripple this team and they’ll be in the same mess they’re in now.

I’ll take Nylander around 9 and shop Marner for a more cost effective player who can play in the playoffs. Marner is a very good player in the regular season but disappears when they need him most. That’s not a big deal if there’s no cap but there is.

We can't afford to pay Marner $12 million, my goodness, why do we have to keep overpaying our players for them to stay? It's like going down on the knees and begging them to stay or whatever, as if playing for the Maple Leafs is a torture, and not some kind of privilege that comes with huge endorsement deals.

Willy's on a better contract so you probably get more for him in a trade, but it's really close either way.

Mitch has been a bit better in the regular season, but Willy's been better in the playoffs.

How about Tavares at $4 and keep both Mitch and Willy?

Someone might want to tell Edmonton to trade McDavid...

Also, Price made 10.5 and went to the finals... or did we change that narrative from player to skater since the original narrative is no longer true?

Also, anything used besides cap % is just silly.

We changed the narrative.

Trade anyone who doesn’t take a contact that lines up with their comparables. For Nylander that’s between Fiala and Forsberg, for Marner that’s between Gaudreau and Pastrnak. If they want to gouge the Leafs again you take your assets and build a team around players who are focused on winning>$.

For a guy with Burke in your name, I'd assume you remember what the Leafs were like without star talent.. And you prefer cap space and signing mediocre players like LACK with that cap instead of keeping Marner and Matthews. Laughable.

If we are entertaining pointless rebuilds we may as well trade Marner, nylander and Matthews.
I have no interest in a treadmill. If this rebuild didn't work out just sell it all and try again.

The three stars should bring like 5+ first round picks to rebuild around. Matthews alone should be two unprotected firsts and a second at least.

Seeing one sided trade transactions make zero sense to me. Propose the assets in return for a meaningful conversation that isnt full of lazy responses.
Whatever happens, needs to happen by sometime in July. Marner doesnt get traded if he doesnt want to get traded after that and the number of teams to trade nylander to gets reduced.

What a meaningless stat. Before 1990, nobody went to the cup with a salary of 3mm. Actually, nobody in the nhl made 3mm
Such a lazy take

I don't know what comparables you are using but on most measures, Marner has been above those 2 in the last 3 year average and Marner is younger.

If they dont get to the 2nd round it'll be an entertaining summer.

Part of their preparation should include management telling Nylander he’s not allowed to play in the World Championships this year, if they haven't done so already.

For skill and entertainment the only player you keep is Marner. He’s a highlight reel.

What is the time frame when determining a UFA contract? I'm looking at strictly platform years.
Well look at Kadri. He put up a pace of 100 points last year and signed for 7MM.
It sure isnt 1 year or less than a year.
Stats are about trends and a reasonable estimation of where someone might produce in the future.
Pasta was an 88 pt player (annualized) last year and had only played 61 games when they announced his contract.
Prior to that, he was an 82 pt player (annualized). Before that he had a great season of 111 pts (annualized). Note that Marners Annualized total last year was 110 pts.. This year 105 and trending up), and the prior year of around 100.

These comparables can bite too. Marners number will show that he deserves huge money. The team will rely on the generosity of it's top players to stay afloat. If you insist that they get paid comparables, you will inevitably be paying far more than you want to. If Marner continues the torrid pace of the last 20 games, he will even exceed Pastas points this year...while being a far superior player defensively.

I look at Tkachuk who has put up more points than Marner and Nylander ever have and I ask, why do Marner and Nylander deserve to be paid more ?? Taxes ??
He put up the points after the contract. In the last 5 years, Marner is #5 in league scoring while Tkachuk is #13 and that is biased data with post contract numbers muddying the mix.
