Kings News: Holland officially GM

I don't think Holland was brought in to fire Hiller.

Holland was brought in to make a final grab for a cup with Kopitar and Doughty. So he's not trading them either.

If he's bringing in his son to take over long-term, he might not mortgage the future either.

I just think he's going to be a lameduck hire, knowing he's playing on borrowed time, but the outcome won't affect his future employment.

I'm not saying he won't make a big move, but he's not driven by trying to save his job.
Knowing he's here to prep the next AGM, Holland may be looking to the future as well as the present. If B. Holland is taking over, it would make sense to clear the deck with the spicy trades so the new GM has a clean slate.

Is the team better with Gavrikov or Doughty. I'd say Gavrikov for next season & 2 seasons when Doughty's contract is up, Gavrikov is definitely the better choice.

Can Doughty be traded for Marner rights?
Kings are probably better with Marner than Doughty next year & they're definitely better two years down the road.

It may not happen, but trading Doughty can make the team more competitive next season & in the future.

They brought him in for that reason, it’s a win at any cost mode for this franchise right now. All the chips are going right to the middle of the table, putting it all on 8 & 11. This is their last rodeo and Holland/Luc/AEG are going to go into this FA and offseason guns ablazing.

If it results in a Cup, great. If not, we’re screwed in 2027/28 and beyond. Going to be a real interesting offseason.
Right on off season , going to be something could be exciting to see. The one thing that kinda gives me hope is that it sounds like he going to have succession plan and bring in assistant Gm and if really is, lets say Ryan Martin or Jack even a Janko, I dont think he would screw the guy he brought in by leaving team in a complete mess.
I personally hope the first thing he does roster wise is hold off on Gavrikov , who is looking for bank, dont pay 30 years old $7+ x 7 which would see his pick for Gm screwed.
If assets are going to be used I want to see him go after Alexander Romanov , hes more physical and would be perfect partner for Clarke or Spence

Since you guys are retooling and not rebuilding, I wonder what your opinion would be on Holland acquiring Dylan Larkin as part of the solution for your lack of a true 1C right now? I know from reading the forum you are not thrilled about your situation at center, would a combo of Kopi and Larkin be appealing?

Background: Larkin appears to have grown tired of the rebuild and made a comment at the end of the season that he wasn’t thrilled the Red Wings were not a buyer at the deadline. This may suggest he’s getting ready to push the eject button and demand a trade to a playoff team.

Complicating matters is the fact he has a NTC, so he’ll be able to decide where he’s headed. But he’s signed for 6 more years at $8.7m per season, which may be a bit too long for your liking.

For Detroit, we’d want someone who’s age (early 20s) would fit our core: Seider, Edvinsson, Raymond, Kasper. Byfield seems like an obvious request, but we’d probably also be open to a good, young defensive d-man who would be a fixture in the top 4. I’d love to sign Gavrikov this summer but it sounds like his family is quite happy out in SoCal.

Is there a deal to be had here, or nah?

No on Gavrikov unless its for 6, he has a career year and will be 30 and has like 3 years of solid play and he's looking for a 7x7 minimum . Rather Go trade route for ld.and move Edmundson. Kings need impact forward and Marner should be atop of list. La can bring in defenseman and have them succeed and they need scoring
It's funny I keep seeing "Ew don't sign 29 year old Gavrikov, he's too old!"

Then at the same time saying "OMG YES GIVE A 100 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO 28 YEAR OLD MARNER!"

We’re screwed in 2027/28 and beyond no matter what. Byfield and Clarke are not enough to build a contender around and are going to be too old to be the face of a youth movement that won’t get started here for a few years anyway.

If Holland is going to come in and make some big win-now splashes then I’m all for it. Acquiring a fun scorer to get them their precious 2nd round appearance will be more enjoyable than seeing Clarke and Spence get benched again or Greentree getting scratched until February before being sent back to juniors.

Empty the cupboards now and let the new GM start fresh with his own core once everyone is gone or retired.

Hoping for the best here but with Hiller and Luc still around it’s hard for me to be optimistic. Hiller deserves credit for the regular season but gets whiny and butthurt when asked perfectly reasonable questions about his losing strategies and dumb decisions in the postseason. Not much accountability or self awareness and that worries me. Like…does he really think he made good decisions there or was he just mad that Bernstein had the gall to question him?

Lol, hes going to be 30 and I am always weary of a player having their best year in a contract year, but besides that team needs to get more moblie on back end and with Edmundson here and who knows if style will change, but it's time to get more mobility on that blue line, really only have Clarke and Spence But yea $100 for 28 year old is too much, but if they could sign him to around a $12x7 ok still alot, but doesn't matter he'll get more elsewhere

Yeah there’s legit no reason to watch until Luc is gone

Until Luc Robitaille is gone, I really don’t care about this team or what they do.
It’s just so sad to see how far this organization has fallen in 11 years. So many people have liked this post that I have interacted with for so damn long on here, and they are ready to throw in the towel on the team we have all loved, and it truly sucks.

But there really isn't much else to do but wait out the end of the Robitaille era.

I don't think so. The Kings biggest issue is they don't have a true game-breaking star forward, and while I am obviously a big Larkin fan, I don't think I'd call Larkin a game-breaking star forward. Had the Kings been able to draft an alpha 1C during their brief tanking stage it's a different story, and Larkin could fit in as a championship caliber 2C like the Kings had with Richards and Carter.

Speaking of Larkin, take it for what it's worth, but we share a mutual friend and he told me for years that Larkin wanted to play his entire career as a Wing, but lately he seems to think Larkin might be open to leave. I guess getting closer to 30 and and wanting to have a playoff run might be pulling him a bit.

I hope the Wings can get good again, the NHL is better as a league when the Wings are great. But man that 2018 draft. It's one thing if it's some kid a world away in Russia or something, but Holland and Wright were both at Yost a lot that year watching Hughes. I just have no idea how anyone could have watched him play and passed on him. And now us Kings fans are getting Holland (and maybe Wright too!)

Thanks for the insight.

If Sr brings Jr aboard as AGM, with Jr positioned to take full control in a few years after Sr retires, this may be an accidentally shrewd move from the French-Canadian Brain Trust.
I was hoping for Holland Jr to take over here- but the optics of nepotism would have been bad (Oilers have a bad history with nepotism). What’s the over/under on how many times he mentions Detroit in the presser tomorrow?

I’m 39 years old. I have pretty vivid childhood memories of the early 90s and 1993. I remember what it was like for the team to be stuck in neutral post-Gretzky and again post-2001. I think the most I drifted as a fan was around the time of the lockout.

Until now.

I just can’t bring myself to watch a lot of games anymore. I know the team is not a real contender. And I know they’re not a couple moves away from being a real contender. None of the prospects or young players are exciting. I think the only player I have earnest affection for is Kempe.

Kopitar and Doughty’s reputations have taken a hit for me. And Luc Robitaille’s has absolutely cratered. I can’t think of a person more ill equipped to run a hockey franchise than Luc Robitaille.

Dean Lombardi was 100% right about the culture in LA being rotten.

Marner, not a fan. With the cupboard dry, draft picks a long way off, he's the highest skilled player the King's may get a chance to sign in a long time.

But if they had their worst year, would you even consider signing them? Hmmmm
I would but depends on age, previous years , situation of the year. But like I said I am always weary of an athlete playing better than he's had especially when it happens to be what looks like to be his final payday

It's actually really not -- and they haven't 'fallen' nearly as much as you allude to.

Sure, but they won't...and neither will you. However it would really be a glorious example of integrity if you did. Then again, you'd have to find something else to do in the day that would substitute 100 posts dedicated to shitting on the org.

Why is Sol 93 on the back and one sleeve, but 39 on the other? 🤪

That’s interesting regarding Larkin. He was pretty critical at the end of the season, which leads me to believe he will likely be traded at some point. I would imagine Holland would be interested in him since he drafted Larkin but totally understand your preference for a dominant 1C. We’ve mostly viewed Larkin as being really good 2C on a championship team so pretty much in line with what you said.

Yeah, Holland totally bombing the Quinn Hughes pick was brutal. My comp for him at the time was ‘imagine Pavel Datsyuk, but as a defender’.

We believe Byfield is our number one center.

Do you want to trade Larkin for Kopitar and 2025 LA first?

Some of you may not want to hear this, but Gavrikov hasn't been very good in the last couple of playoff years. The shine wears off when he has to be counted on to play against the opposition's top players. That's why Edmonton has such an easy time toying around with the Kings inside their zone.

I'd be careful overpaying him.
I am 100% agree with your opinion about Gavrikov.

Kopitar wouldn’t fit our window. The hope is the top draft picks will be good to go by the 2026-27 season. If we are going to trade Larkin, we are going to want someone who is in his early 20s or thereabouts to fit that timeline.

Kopitar is going to finish his career next year.

Byfield is his replacement and he is too valuable for Kings.
