HOH Top-60 Pre-merger players: voting results

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. I just noticed that the results I've been posting include NRs from unsubmitted ballots. So for example, Didier Pitre has 2 NRs, even though he was never NR'd this week.

We had 13 voters this week - 3 abstained. Why only two showing up as NR? The one who's been abstaining right from the start is not currently even on the spreadsheet, so their nonexistent weekly ballot is not logging NRs. Just the two from the non-voters we actually expected to vote.

I'm surprised to see Walker get a #1 vote. I didn't rank him, but almost did. Would love to read the argument for him that high.

I'm not in this thing, but I would also have ranked Walker #1 this round.

Lester Patrick, in 1950, called Walker "one of the greatest players who ever lived", but also claimed he was a boring player, meaning not someone who wowed the crowd with either charisma or too much zig-zagging. So he didn't get too much ravings in the press, and he also spent much of his career in a non-Canadian market, meaning even less ravings.

But, while boring, he was still a very effective and accomplished player. Arguably the 2nd best defensive forward of his time, and not an offensive black hole when called upon. Even when Bernie Morris was out for the 1919 (non-completed) SCFs, Seattle still went toe-to-toe with Montreal.

I can't see a compelling argument for ranking Morris over Walker (I also wouldn't rank someone like Hay over Walker, but that's a bit beside this particular point). One has to take into account that Morris was a C in the PCHA, and the PCHA didn't move away from the rover until the early 20s, meaning Morris was still effectively "babysat" defensively by either Walker or Foyston (or both). This is also obviously true for someone like Dunderdale, who also was a C in the PCHA.

Guess I'm a Tommy Smith fanboy!

Kind of lame for George Hay to get voted in with very little discussion, though I did have him towards the end of my ballot.

I have lots of material on George Hay that I can post when the time is right. He kind of slipped through the cracks for me the last few weeks, but I had him high on my ballot.

I apologize for that, I should have been the one to make the case (or Sturm), but life seriously got in the way in March.

For me, George Hay's all around play, nonstop star power, being measured against Aurèle Joliat and coming out equal, being adaptive to the style of his linemates (à la Elias, the player I compare him to), and the fact his defensive reputation was enormous and from day one till the last season of his career, made him a unique player and appealing candidate.

Round 7 results. I have fixed the issue with the way NRs are reported, but probably won't go back and edit all the previous posts anytime soon.

Weldy Young survives two completely-out-of-nowhere NR votes to stay on top. Bain, Smith and Simpson join him.

With Walker and Moran separated by just three points, we decided that whatever happens to one, happens to the other. Precedent dictates that if Walker gets in, so does Moran. But we went the other way, mainly because they are 21 points behind the clear 4th place, Simpson, and only 8 ahead of the next behind them, Smith. So the project could benefit from having these two in the hopper for discussion one more (last?) time.

Congratulations to @rmartin65 for Young's ranking here, which would absolutely not have happened without his immense amount of research prior to the project. If this poll had been taken 6 months ago Young would have ranked miles behind the likes of Bain and Simpson. This is one of those little feathers in the cap for the HOH forum making real progress on how these players are understood.

Round 8: 14 of 16 participants voted.

First shutouts in the entire project! I guess when we keep making the player pool larger, we keep increasing the likelihood of it happening. Russell is particularly surprising though, being a holdover from vote 7, who was not shut out last time!

Because we added four last round, the goal was to add six this time, to get to an even 40. There is a clear separation between 6th (Gardiner) and 7th (Noble) - the same five-point gap that kept Pitre from getting in on vote 5.

We thought it was worth mentioning that with Noble and Hall only 5 & 8 behind Gardiner, and a whopping 30 and 27 ahead of Patrick, we gave serious consideration to adding all three of them.

Round 9: We had to go forward with just 12 votes this time.

Dunderdale is close enough, he gets in with MacDougall.

Patrick gets the tiebreak over Irvin, as he topped him on 7 of 11 ballots (one NR'd them both).

The goal was to add 4 this round, but 5 will get in due to the closeness between 3-4-5 and the distance from 5 to 6.

Very small gaps all around, the only notable one is the one from 6th (Cook) to 7th (Cleghorn), so we will be adding 6 this round. 7 new names go in the hopper.

The voting is not bad, but is so ATD-list derivative, as expected.

The criteria for an ATD what-if player should be in stark contrast to this project.

(For the record, historical references spell it "Blair Russel", not "Russell"; moreover, applause should meet the Paton and Hyland 1st place votes given their historical significance; let Oatman be forgotten.)

Do you think so? I'm not sure. McGee going that high flies in the face of ATD canon. Bowie before Malone, Gerard, Phillips. Weldy Young and Dan Bain where they are placed is not an ATD thing at all. Gardiner being so late, Morris being late, Cy Denneny dropping as far as he did.

I'm not saying the voting is perfect, but I don't think it shows too-heavy of an ATD bias, certainly not any more than other projects have.

Also- you could have participated. Your votes and arguments could have helped push discussion and ballots. We are continuing the project (to 70 names from the planned 60) and are debating on whether or not to ask non-participants to submit lists for the extension. Would this interest you?

(For the record, historical references spell it "Blair Russel", not "Russell";
False. Historical records (the game summaries) largely refer to him as "Russell". It was only after his career where the single "l" became commonplace. For reference, please see the quotes I pulled from the game summaries (they can be found in the research thread or in the two most recent discussion threads). The HHoF has the single "l", so I do agree that we should go with that, but historical references do vary and to say that they don't is simply not true.

moreover, applause should meet the Paton and Hyland 1st place votes given their historical significance; let Oatman be forgotten.)
If you have a case for either of them, please present it here. There are a lot of worthy names.

The only way to be consistent with past rounds, is to add just two players to the list this round, which gets us to 59, meaning we will have a goal of six next round (to get us to 65). Let's try to hammer out something resembling a consensus on these guys.

With these gaps, we have no choice but to only add the top 3: Boon, Paton and Trihey. We won't be adding anyone to the discussion for round 14. There will be 21 names, and the top-8 make it, and that's it. Project will end at 70 names.

Vote 14, the final vote: 11 voters.

Harry Smith just barely makes it, Shirley Davidson barely misses.

Jack Adams beats Hern in a tiebreak by being ahead on 6 of 11 ballots. Darragh beats out Hutton by the same score.
