Would our 1st next year not be close enough? Not saying we do that or that I want to, but we have plenty of pieces to get a deal done.

Gio, Brodie, Dougie, Johnny, Mony, Benny, Tkachuk, Backlund and our 1st next season are pieces that come to mind.

Your first next year and a top 9 forward and id consider it..

A lot of those pieces have been automatically assumed to be off limits for Hoffman. Backlund isn't of any interest, Sens are very deep in middle 6 centers.

Calgary doesn't have the cap space or the assets to make a fair trade here. Unless Sens fans like Brouwer.

Brouwer is also not of interest. Sens aren't going to trade a top line LW for what would become their third line RW.

If Sens were to trade Hoffman, they need a top 6 LW capable player. Gaudreau is unmentionable, and Ferland/Bouma too in the other direction. If Frolik was that person, I'd rather hope the Sens just pay Hoffman. Bennett would be good, but that's not a trade anyone from Calgary likely wants to see.

I like Bennett ... Bennett + we could shake on it right now,

I'm sure you do like Bennett. He's our future #1C so that's absolutely not happening.

These two teams aren't great trading partners. We will need you to take back a bad contract which will be tough for the Sens to do plus we don't have a lot of current roster pieces we would be willing to part with. Looks like the Sens are going for it (more so than other years at least) so I doubt strictly futures would get it done. I'd do a prospect not named Tkachuk and a 2nd or 3rd or a 1st next year and one of Porier, Smith, Klimchuk, Morrison or Polluck

None of those guys are getting moved.

Backlund is a possibility, but I would doubt it, Flames management loves the guy especially as a shut down center.

Logically if this trade were to happen, someone either with a 4M+ contract would have to come back so that Calgary could fit in a Hoffman extension.

Brouwer isn't going to be traded right after signing with CGY, that never happens.

So at forward, you're looking at a short list of Backlund, Frolik, Monahan, and Gaudreau. If it's a package or based around an ELC player, I guess there is a possibility Smid could be involved for cap reasons.

I just don't see it unless CGY is gonna do something crazy like offer Bennett and a cap dump. Ottawa is better off going one year on Hoffman than trading him right now for anything other than a stellar return.

Bennett is as core as it gets for the Flames, if any trade is going to happen expect a over payment of biblical proportions.

Probably Tkachuk + 1st as a starting point.

Tkachuk + top 10 pick for hoffman AS A STARTING POINT?
as a neutral fan that is disgustingly bad for calgary.
sens would take tkachuk or the flames 1st in a heartbeat

Hoffman has been a top 5 even strength goal scorer and top 10 even strength point producer the past two years (his rookie and sophomore seasons) when you consider ice time (G/60 and P/60). In other words, he's been one of the most efficient scorers in the entire league through his first two years.

He's always been a late bloomer, and has ended up an elite scorer in every league he has played in. Not that surprising either - kid shoots the puck, skates, and has better hands then 95% of NHLers.

Sens shouldn't trade Hoffman for anything less than a huge return. He's a tremendous offensive player and deserves to be paid like one. Seems like both Hoffman and the Sens want to get a deal done, and I expect it will happen before arbitration. Guy should be a Senator for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, but the problem is that...
- at the top is a handful of great/young players that Calgary won't trade.
- Then there's a big ole bunch o' crap at the bottom in Calgary's grossly overpaid role players.

There's very few assets in the middle and these are the assets that'd be handy to be able to offer up in trade.

hoffman is a solid scorer, but he has a lot of flaws as well, esecially defensively. he is what he is. a 25-30g, 50-60pt 2nd line winger who doesnt always bring it. he should get approx 5 million in salary.

1st alone is not enough. Flames could easily finish near the middle of the league, and the Sens need someone who can play right now if they are to trade Hoffman.
