Cynical prayer: the interviews with broadcasters are footsie to keep them praising the club in public

Maybe trying to get other candidate(s) to lower salary demands? Yeah I am reaching for anything here.

Just hoping like hell that the first rounds were very light, cursory ordeals to check interest and the 2nd round is the actual meaty part where they discuss the job.

I dub this the Houston Express.

^ just give the f***ing job to Steve Sullivan. Literally doing nothing is 1,000x better than these guys trying to figure this out.

I’m with Mosby, of the actual names actually mentioned as in the running (meaning no Shero or Hunter) Sullivan is my 2nd choice behind Hextall. And with the rumors of a Tocchet rift, combined with Sullivan talking about picks and apparently fielding offers for Kuemper, his head is obviously in the right spot.

Key Points:

1. Rumors are Sullivan wants Tocchet out.

2. Last time Sullivan was named GM of a pro team he hired Mike Van Ryn.

3. Of all the listed candidates, Sullivan is the only one other than Hextall to actually have run a pro team.

4. Sullivan has stated he wants to recoup picks as a top priority

5. Sullivan is not rumored to be fielding offers on Kuemper (indicating he’s looking to rebuild).

Just give me Sullivan. Give me Sullivan damnit!!!!

That's the hangup. Everyone is telling Meruelo and co. to not let Tocchet go. Tocchet needs an extension. There's no punt here. One side has to win out.

The team still has my credit from last season that I might use to renew my seats for next season.

They hire Pierre I will cancel that immediately and start rooting for the Kings since I’m in LA every other month for work.

Tocchet is such a popular guy and is so bad at his job. Most dangerous kind of employee.

He's also relatively cheap. It's a triple threat for Meruelo.

Ron Francis will probably have a blast with the expansion draft. That will be fun to follow if the league foists some grim reaper on the Coyotes.

Savard is out in St Louis. He coached the PP. They were statistically better but not in quality.

Can we trade Housley, Penguins PP Master Tocchet for Van Ryn and Ott? Money is probably a wash or even a savings.

I honestly don't care how many people they talk to. It isn't the worst plan to just interview literally everyone around and interested and ask them. "We're not happy where we are. How do we get to where we want to be" and basically get a pulse. Especially if you don't have a strong background in this business. Just like it doesn't bother me that they apparently asked Tocchet for input.
I'll get worried when they make a terrible hire. I'm not ready to flip out because of who they are talking to. Especially when some of the names like Chia are apparently the NHL's unwritten version of the Rooney-rule.
If they actually hire someone completely out of left field I'll join in the panic attack.

And they already have the perfect excuse to move with COVID-19, no revenue, and no arena-- they don't have to take the franchise down and destroy it's value to move. Plus it's probably easier to get Houston to pay for part of an arena if your franchise is not an inept tire fire.

I think a relo is very much a possibility if there is no revenue/arena deal this year, but the "Major League" talk doesn't touch reality.

They don't need an arena. Fertitta would be the owner. He wants a team, but not at expansion prices. Toyota Center has already hosted hockey before. Several prominent owners want Houston (and Fertitta) in the fold.

Beyond the scope of this thread, but there's almost no barrier to the team moving in any given summer to Houston if Meruelo taps out.

So your hot take is Meruelo already wants out and is going to sell the team, but first he's going to deliberately burn the franchise to the ground to make the franchise more attractive to Ferttita and maximize his return? Give your head a shake.

No. How did you glean that from this thread?

No burning is required. Ferttita doesn't care. He can take the team at any time and would be happy to do so for less than teams are paying for expansion. The Coyotes would largely be an assumption of existing debt aka dirt cheap. It doesn't matter because we'd never see it coming. Everything is already in place. There's no point in worrying about it. It'd be a Sopranos style end.

I think it's a possibility Meruelo can't finance his way out of the already lost games + another season in a bubble. That's not going to be unique to the Coyotes either. So we'll see what the league does about it.

If they hire Maguire, I almost hope they do move to Houston. I suspect older me wont feel "obligated" to continue supporting the team when it relocates this time around, and I'll be able to finally extract myself from this clown car.
