This isn't an issue as much for hockey except maybe super high end like The Cup but still concerning if you're someone who opens boxes.
I saw that article as well and was wondering what kind of impact it could have on the hobby. Especially with the higher-end products. Really cuts into the spirit of opening packs (though, obviously this has been an issue for decades to some extent with resealing and weighing products). This just seems like the next level.

There's always been ways to search packs. Especially with Upper Deck, who has horrible "hit" placement. Buying loose packs, or even boxes sometimes, has always been a risk endeavour. Even with boxes, people will rip until they get the hits and sell off the excess. Happened to me buying loose Series 1 boxes in 2015/16. Bought a bunch of boxes online from Fans Edge and not a single McDavid. Ended up with half boxes that had the same Young Guns.

Is there a reason why there are so few Ken Dryden cards since he retired?

Not included in any legends set or insert outside of a 2008 Montreal Canadiens centennial set. He's a HOFer. Rogie Vachon who was inducted just recently has triple the amount nof cards.
Maybe he doesn't sign? Guys who sign will have cards made because they can also make rarer cards of that player. Also, each retired player signs a separate deal so if Dryden doesn't bother with those deals, then he will have few cards.

Cup will be interesting as it comes in a metal tin that I believe is attractive to magnets. Personally I don't think they will bother with hockey at all as running a CT scan isn't cheap.

So I cleaned out a storage unit and I came across a few of my old boxes and cases of cards. They've just been sitting around for years. I'm wondering if there's any way of looking into what the value of some of these things are these days? I know Beckett was the thing back when I was a kid but I think it's long since gone. I've looked on ebay and there's just such a variety in pricing so I don't think that's really a standard.

It's mostly stuff from OPC and UD from like 89-92 so there's SOME value but not like crazy things. Just looking to offload these but not give them away. Any tips on where to look? Obviously grading and condition matter but I'm looking to get just general information at this point.

Question; I usually don't buy Artifact sets, but I decided to try them out and some cards have a redemption code for the online collection book. Does scratching it devalue the card? I don't wanna scratch it if it does.

I collected cards pretty religiously growing up, probably from around 7-8 years old until I was maybe 20. Probably bought a couple of cases between 20-24 to relive the nostalgia and see what I could pull. I’m 38 now and this is my first full Christmas with my stepson, who is 8. We’ve been ice skating several times this winter, he’s been to a couple of games, gotten a jersey and I grabbed a box of cards for his stocking. I’d really enjoy it if he got into collecting cards and got even more into hockey.

Yes, scratching the card always devalues the card.

Is there a way to contact someone and be like"heeeyyyyyyyy what is up, my guy, my card isn't signed", or no ?

Im assuming being 21 years old might be a little late, but I'm just wondering. 🤣

It's refreshing to see it not only confirm the jersey is game-worn, but the specific game it was worn in.

Upper Deck could learn a thing, not that they will.

The future of the hobby is going to be more like online gambling. CT scans will become irrelevant because physical product will not leave the hands of UD or Fanatics.

I think Fanatics or UD will come up with a system where instead of shipping cards directly to breakers and having the breakers break them, the breakers and hobby shops would exist completely online in a closed system that cuts out the massive cost of shipping and individually warehousing items.

Think about how ePack works now, but instead of every box being sold by Upper Deck, maybe there would be individual dealers who could set their own prices the same way they do with the retail store. That allows Upper Deck to maintain their current system where the risk of the product is passed on to another business.

If they figure out a way to incorporate breaking into an ePack type platform, it's completely over. Think about it this way. When Joe Breaker opens a box on video on Youtube, what would be the difference between him pressing a button on a shared screen via ePack and announcing the next hit vs him having the cards in his physical person. In fact, it would add value since it would ensure everybody gets their cards right away, and it would prevent any funny business.

If I were involved with a major company like eBay, I would try to work with Upper Deck and COMC to come up with some sort of virtual and standardized version of breaking that allows any individual or business, big or small, to sell spots in a virtual break, and host it. Whoever standardizes and automates breaking is going to make a fortune, because the big hurdle with breaking is the lack of standardization and risk of fraud. I am actually surprised that with where the hobby is now, and Upper Deck already having the ePack platform setup, that they never introduced a breaking element to it.

For that generation of cards, unless it's an autograph, I would just search on eBay for PSA 10 sold and completed listings.

For example, if you find 91-92 Score cards, just search sold/completed listings for PSA 10 91-92 Score and sort by price highest.

How does that work with the jersey patch not being part of the card? Did they come already graded or something?
BGS offered the opportunity to put a piece of jersey in their holder as an upgrade when you graded a Crosby card. They’ve done similar things with other athletes over the years.

It gets weirder

I dont see anything odd with owning a piece of hair encased in a card:
