I saw that article as well and was wondering what kind of impact it could have on the hobby. Especially with the higher-end products. Really cuts into the spirit of opening packs (though, obviously this has been an issue for decades to some extent with resealing and weighing products). This just seems like the next level.
The future of the hobby is going to be more like online gambling. CT scans will become irrelevant because physical product will not leave the hands of UD or Fanatics.
I think Fanatics or UD will come up with a system where instead of shipping cards directly to breakers and having the breakers break them, the breakers and hobby shops would exist completely online in a closed system that cuts out the massive cost of shipping and individually warehousing items.
Think about how ePack works now, but instead of every box being sold by Upper Deck, maybe there would be individual dealers who could set their own prices the same way they do with the retail store. That allows Upper Deck to maintain their current system where the risk of the product is passed on to another business.
If they figure out a way to incorporate breaking into an ePack type platform, it's completely over. Think about it this way. When Joe Breaker opens a box on video on Youtube, what would be the difference between him pressing a button on a shared screen via ePack and announcing the next hit vs him having the cards in his physical person. In fact, it would add value since it would ensure everybody gets their cards right away, and it would prevent any funny business.
If I were involved with a major company like eBay, I would try to work with Upper Deck and COMC to come up with some sort of virtual and standardized version of breaking that allows any individual or business, big or small, to sell spots in a virtual break, and host it. Whoever standardizes and automates breaking is going to make a fortune, because the big hurdle with breaking is the lack of standardization and risk of fraud. I am actually surprised that with where the hobby is now, and Upper Deck already having the ePack platform setup, that they never introduced a breaking element to it.
