Last week was a reported sale of a 2nd year OPC Gretzky 80-81, PSA 9 for about $4750. PWCC has a PSA 9 79-80 OPC Gretzky for $475,000.
That’s insane, the 2nd year card is 1% the price of the first year card. IMO most Gretzky cards are way underpriced: he should be the Jordan of hockey.

Wow I pulled a 2nd year Gretzky out of a OPC pack at a show in 90-91. Paid 5 bucks for the pack. Went straight from the pack into a holder. Wonder how it would grade its never been handled.

Guess its time to be graded.

Not a collector, but my son is interested. I bought him a series 1 hobby box, and after opening all the packs, he still needed about 36 cards to complete the set (minus specialty cards). So I bought him a tin expecting to get at least a few new cards, but they were all cards he already had. Was I just unlucky, or is this common?

Looks like $20 at a minimum, going upwards to $40 right now.

And just like that, the market died.

Canadians, please, don't buy hockey in Canada. You will get hockey cards for nothing in the states. Blasters of series two are sitting on shelves everywhere and nobody is buying them.

The only money in current product is basketball and even that has dropped considerably lately.

If you sold for huge gains, good for you. The only current hockey will be high end stuff. The Young Guns phase is over.

What market? Nothing has changed.

No one cares about Upper Deck blasters because they have horrible value/odds.
EPL Prizm has weak value too and you won't find it at 99% of stores.

I've been to 25 different walmarts and you'll be lucky to find parkhurst hockey. That's about it.

I have cases of Series 1 and 2 hobby, I would never touch blasters of it at walmart. Passed on hundreds of them.

Second, huh? There's literally hundreds of epl prizm auctions there. If paying ridiculous Fleabay prices are something anybody wants to do, be my guest.

Drop the money and buy from Panini. Much, much cheaper.

The odds of you not getting a single card is extremely low, like in the millions. UD often has collation issues, where cards are not packaged randomly like they should be.

Are you talking about singles of epl prizm or boxes?
Because no one cares about common cards.
You can't get any sealed product under msrp.

Buy directly from Panini ?
Even stores that have been around 30 years can't even get Panini products anymore.
They won't even give them one hobby box.

Is the upcoming Upper Deck Game Used Hobby Box worth getting? I haven't bought packs of any sport for quite some time. Beyond whatever is valuable in it, I'm hoping to pull an item or two of the Blackhawks rookies, but I haven't seen a checklist for what will be possible to pull in that set.

All sports cards on fire. Soccer may not be hot in your market but I have not seen a blaster or rack pack at multiple Targets in Phoenix in 2 months. I bought that last 3 blasters I saw (WWE Topps Finest) in February.

At the current prices I think it's hard to find value in buying boxes. The two cards you're mainly looking for in SPGU is the Draft Day Marks and the True Rookie numbered to the jersey number.

Is there better value, in my case of searching Blackhawks rookies, for buying a box of '07-08 (about the same price as a box of SP) with Kane/Toews rookies up for grabs or is that going into the realm of expired redemption cards?

You should be able to complete a base set with 2 hobby boxes. If you're interested in a recent base set (within the last 2-3 years) for your son let me know. I can probably get something out your way.

Thanks. Pretty much what I thought.

It’s an OPC. Pulled it out of a pack in 1995. Guy was selling the packs for $18 back then.

I’ll post pics of some of the other ones I have.
