With the final pick in this year's draft, Colorado selects from Stanstead College in Quebec, defenceman Liam Steele. The big Brit is headed to Chilliwack of the BCHL next year before heading to Cornell. Will be an intetesting draft and follow, as he's got size, offensive skill, hockey sense, and leadership ability as evidenced by him being team captain at Stanstead this year. He's got the tools, now just needs to apply his game at a higher level as he works his way up through tougher leagues . Would be good for hockey in the UK if he could get drafted and make it to the NHL.

2 (46) Filip Bystedt - SWE - LC - 6'4" 205 lbs. - Linkoping HC (SHL)

3 (85) Jordan Dumais - CAN - RW - 5'9" 165 lbs. - Halifax (QMJHL)

5 (149) George Fegaras - CAN - RD - 6'2" 194 lbs. - North York (OJHL)

6 (181) Mason Beaupit - CAN - G - 6'5" 185 lbs. - Spokane (WHL)

7 (213) Matthew Morden - CAN - LD - 6'5" 203 lbs. - St. Andrew's College (CAHS)

Draft recap:
Overall I'm quite happy with the value I got here, especially with my first 3 picks. I had an eye on BPA with each pick, and even though I think Dumais will likely go around where I got him here, I think he has the most potential to be a home run pick down the road. Outside of him it looks like I was keen on size this year but that was certainly not intentional.

Speaking of home runs, I definitely swung for the fences my last 3 picks. Fegaras and Morden are in similar situations coming from lower tiers to NCAA. Fegaras is more offensively focused, while Morden, who I'm especially excited about, is a big man who can skate very well but also has soft hands with some untapped offensive potential. The fact he made the u18 national team out of the CAHS is especially impressive and he proceeded to look good against this top comp to my eye, even dangling at full speed on occasion. He is also one of the youngest in the draft as a late July bday.

Finally, the massive and athletic Beaupit I think could have a big upcoming season playing behind a more experienced defense in Spokane. He looked good pitching a half game SO in the CHL Top Prospects game as well. I'd be thrilled for the Oilers to take a swing at any or all 3 of these fellas with their final 3 picks, especially Morden.

Thanks to all for another fun year. As always this exercise has forced/helped me learn much more about this year's prospects. Looking forward to reconvening shortly to see how we fared with the real thing coming up!

Not much for safe picks among Colorado's draftees besides Hujer. Speaking of whom, I'm excited to see what the defensively responsible power forward can do next year as I think there's more offensive upside there than he's generally given credit for.

Avalanche picks:

3 (97) - D - Tristan Sarsland; Benilde St. Margaret's, HIGH-MN
5 (161) - RW - Nikita Grebenkin - Magnitogorsk, MHL
6 (193) - C - Jakub Hujer - Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL
7 (225) - D - Liam Steele, Stanstead College, HIGH-QC

Overall pretty solid draft I think from myself. But I'll be honest, I havent followed this draft very close. I do think probably 5 of the guys I picked will end up going in the first round from what I see. (but that doesnt necessarily mean they will be great NHL'ers).

Not sure on Havelid, Vilmanis, or Silverstein in particular.

I like Havelids tools so we will see. I dont like picking smallish dman in general though.

Always fun boys!

Got the best forward in the draft, imo. I like alot of the other players, they were rising. Plus they go back to the Latvian goalie well.

I think you got good value with the Fegaras pick too. He's an honourable mention on Bob McKenzie's final rankings and around the 100 mark in other rankings and you got him in the 5th round. He's a good all around 2-way player, who can skate, has good puck handling, can move the puck and has good hockey sense. A lot to like there. He's headed to Cornell in 2023 too and might be competing for freshman icetime with my final pick Liam Steele as they're both right shot defenders.

1 (14th) - Denton Mateychuk, LD, Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL
Thought about taking Minty and really thought about taking Kasper. Took Mateychuk to look back on this in 10 years and be like "damn right" if he makes it. The Jets don't need another LD in the cupboard but oh well screw them. I kept them happy by drafting the hometown storyline.

1 (30th) - Jiri Kulich, LC, Karlovy Vary (Czech Extraliga)
Was pretty stoked to grab Kulich here. Played against men and looked dominant when playing his peer group. Monster U18s.

2 (55th) - Reid Schaefer, LW, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
Get really bad Mitch Moroz vibes but what if one of these big power forward hopes and dreams actually comes through? I considered taking Maverik Lamoureux, and he was snatched up right after lol.

3 (77th) - Kirill Dolzhenkov, LW, CSKA (MHL)
The big man blocks out the sun and has some hands around the net. Man if he can be competent on skates and dare I say even skate, may have something here. McKenzie still had him at 77 in his rankings but will probably get dinged with the Russian factor and the stories coming out of Russian customs and CSKA.

4 (99th) - Tucker Robertson, RC, Peterborough Petes (OHL)
I wanted Cruz Lucius here because brother storyline, but he got taken a bit earlier, so instead I dip into the overagers and take a 40-goal two-way fiesty center.

6 (175th) - Charlie Leddy, RD, USNTDP - U18 (USHL)
After drafting Mateychuk I wanted to draft a shutdown partner to potentially grow with in the system. Charles Leddy is more renowned for his defensive contributions and fit the bill in this regard.

7 (207th) - Ben King, RC, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
6'3 right handed center with 50/100 was a popular target in the seventh round.

_______

Thanks everyone for taking part and for banging out a whole draft with our time constraints. Hopefully something we can get used to for seasons to come. Huge thanks to @PKSpecialist for doing everything, this was the least amount of work I had to do for one of these and that was awesome.

I think Cooley ends up being the top player from this draft. So dynamic offensively. Not sure I see the elite talent from Wright or Slavkovsky to be 80 point players at the NHL level, but I see it from Cooley. Getting Pickering at 32 is nice, and I think Firkus carves out a niche for himself at the NHL level too. Arizona would probably be pretty happy if the draft broke this way for them.

Speaking of elite offensive players, I think Joakim Kemell ends up better than Wright and Slavkovsky as well. That shot is deadly, he's got nice stickhandling, offensive awareness, vision and compete I think he'll improve his explosiveness with some added strength, and with some maturity he'll cut down on turnovers from bad decisions with the puck. He should be in that top 4 mix and I think people penalizing him in the rankings for his downed production in the second half of the season are maybe focusing too much on the present instead of projecting what Kemell is likely to become at the NHL level.

As a point of comparison I think Cutter Gauthier gets more hype than he deserves because people are too bullish on his projection. You're not going to score as much on the rush in the NHL, there's too much complacency defensively, and too much disappearing and risky choices with the puck which lead to turnovers. I have a hard time seeing that translating to top 6 NHL player. He's impressive when he gets moving but I see a slightly better Warren Foegele with more awareness of his teammates, rather than a top end power forward.

Thanks to Soli and PKspecialist and everyone who does the work to make this happen.

The one big benefit of this exercise is it gets a person to do a bit of research into a lot of players. Come the draft day(s) I'll actually be a bit familiar with many of these guys, too bad the Oilers have so few picks.

As for my San Jose draft philosophy goes, I wanted to try for high ceiling players even if they have a low floor.

I also have no qualms about taking over-agers or guys who have been by passed in previous drafts. Being an over-ager has been a bad word re drafted players for a lot of years. I think it is well worth taking these guys, especially in the middle to late in the draft. Some guys just take a bit longer or finally get the chance to shine later than others.

As usually happens in these drafts I got sniped a few times with the guy I wanted going shortly before my pick.

Out of my 9 picks I'd say I am happy with about 7 of them and have buyers regret on a couple of my decisions.

1 (9) - C Cutter Gauthier
1 (22) - RD Ryan Chesley
2 (42) - W Gleb Trikozov
‎2 (50) - W Adam Sykora
4 (100) - C Logan Morrison
5 (136) - RD Ryan Healey
7 (206) - C Daimon Gardner
7 (218) - G Dennis Hildeby

First two picks are safe bets to make it to the NHL, but I'm also more bullish on their ceilings than most—Cutter Gauthier has Dylan Larkin-esque upside in my opinion, and Ryan Chesley has a shot at becoming a #1 defenseman if his offensive game develops the way I think it can.

In the 2nd round, Gleb Trikozov and Adam Sykora are very different prospects. Trikozov has high-end talent and, despite him likely falling on Thursday, was hard to pass on at 42. Sykora is less skilled but easily projectable as a valuable middle-6er. I'd argue that his motor is up there for best in the draft.

I like Logan Morrison as a 4th rounder. I worry that his lack of physical tools will hold him back at the NHL level, but he is such an intelligent offensive player that I could see him carving out a career anyway. He'll likely play in the AHL next year and could be a solid contributor right away. On the other hand, Ryan Healey is a defenseman with noteworthy tools — he is one of the best skaters in the draft — but has yet to really put it together. This is a higher upside pick than Morrison but less likely to pan out, well worth a gamble in the 5th round IMO.

With my two 7ths, I first took a swing on Daimon Gardner, a big centerman with a slick pair of hands. He's playing in the BCHL next year, which isn't ideal for a D+1 player, but I like the potential. With pick 218, I selected a goaltender that I actually have ranked higher than Gardner but suspected would slip. (The last time I tried this, Devon Levi was sniped one pick before mine.) I haven't seen Dennis Hildeby on anyone else's radar, but he's 6'6, very poised, and performed well during his time in the SHL this year. I don't like him quite as much as I did Devon Levi a couple years back, but I do think there's NHL potential.

I'm hoping to get 4 NHLers out of this group. This could be a fun bump in a few years. :)

After draft, everyone on here should have some kind of scoring system similar to golf to see who came closest

1. If u pick player in correct spot, correct round, score of 0 achieved
2. Player picked in round, positive score added to score . I.E - player picked to be drafted at 3rd and is drafted at 5th, + 2 would score. Similar for a player to be picked at 7th and comes in at 5th. Score is still +2

Really wanted to add offense to the Canes lineup, but this just isn't the draft for it when you are picking late in the second round. Ended up getting several guys who I think can round out a bottom 6 in the league quite well. I'll be shocked if I don't get + grades on Mastrodomenico, Hokkanen, Thornton, Whitehead and Dionicio.

This is what separates the men from the boys in terms of drafting. Lots of darts in the second and third rounds. Can't wait to see how many bulleyes I hit. Brayden Schuurman is my pick for sleeper of the draft. I'd pick him in the second round easily. He plays like Brendan Gallagher without the antics. He's small but gets to the dirty areas and has the lower body strength to win the battles there.

My highest rated player who went undrafted was Dylan Godbout from Hill-Murray. He captained his high school team, one of the best in the state, while pacing them in scoring. He will play for the University of Wisconsin next year. I'd love for the Oilers to grab a player like him with one of our later picks. Speaking of Dylan's, Elite 8 MVP Dylan Hryckowian is another interesting forward with some offensive flair who might be worth a late flier. In a draft like this one I think the US High Schools have many interesting options later in the draft.

A couple more sleepers who I must mention. Layton Feist from the Regina Pats. He's hidden on the depth chart a bit with Ryker Evans there, but I would expect an offensive explosion next year when he gets PP time with Bedard...assuming Evans moves to the AHL. Dylan Ernst backed up Dylan Garand this year and played respectably when Garand was away. I talked to a few scouts in Regina this year who mentioned him in the same breath as Brennan/Dyck. Wouldn't be surprised to see him picked. Carson Buydens who played for Virden in the MJHL had a host of scouts following him around in the last 20 games of the season... he's a big forward whose production wasn't as good as you'd expect in a lesser scouted league, from a kid garnering the interest he was, but I'd expect him to get taken before any of the 3 SJHL kids ranked by the CSS.
