You gotta be kidding me. Can't we not have Toene make the pick? Ponomarev was our pick here as I couldn't believe he had dropped all the way to the end of the 2nd round.
We are not picking again until the 5th round (way to tank a season without any picks, Sharks...), so we might as well go for upside here and select Finnish winger Kasper Simontaival.
Sure, this is a third forward in as many picks, but we feel that's where the value is at this point in the draft and while we REALLY liked Ponomarev, Simontaival is much more than a consolation prize. He's small, but we love that he's conscious about his own zone in addition to being an absolute offensive dynamo.

Gushchin is a late 1st for me. Even if we have a few small wingers in our pool/system (Caufield etc.) that's not something i worry about when making a pick, it's always BPA. The prospects you pick actually need to turn into good players (and hitting your picks is hard enough as is) for you to have an issue with redundancy in your NHL roster.. and at that point those assets turn into trade chips. If we do get to that point, it'll be a good problem to have.

Ottawa Senators are pleased to select from the USNTDP LW Luke Tuch.
Tuch has the same upside as his brother, a big, power forward who plays a possession game. He's solid on his skates, which allows him to protect the puck well. He'll play USHL next year then head to Boston University in 21-22. Already plays a pro-style game. Three years away from pro. Ottawa can afford to wait.
