He has pretty clearly been fighting some kind of injury the entire season. He is a fraction of the player he was last season.
I’m not even a Matthews fan but I can respect the guy who’s likely the leagues best goal scorer and still plays above average defence

But it wasn't and isn't a reviewable play. So how were they able to review it and take the goal away and retroactively call it?
They explained it on Sportsnet. Linesman can call a penalty if there is an injury on the play. Tanev was cut therefore there was an injury on the play. The linesman told the ref who didn't see it and allowed the goal to be scored. Upon receiving the information from the linesman and seeing that indeed Tanev is cut ref can check the replay for a major penalty instead of having to take the linesman's word for it. So they went and saw the replay. Penalty was obvious therefore the goal is, also obviously, called off.

Ok dude, lol. Call it right away then, not wait after Buffalo scores. That's a complete horseshit call to do AFTER they scored.
Freidman just explained the call. It is weird but correct application of the rulebook. Basically the linesmen saw the penalty happen, they can't blow the call dead but they can pull it back if a goal is scored after and tell the refs about it.

He didn't call it or the play would have been stopped when the Sabres touched the puck. Why didn't they stop the play?
They are supposed to wait till a whistle and go to the refs about it. Which is what he did.
Unfortunately for the Sabres that whistle was a goal that was then disallowed

I'm not sure if the linesman can call the penalty but he can advise the reffs if they missed a call that caused injury on the goal scoring play.

Complete shocker that sportsnet would see this as fine since it benefits the leafs. A penalty apparently being called but play not being stopped and then calling it after the Sabres score.

Linesmen aren't allowed to blow down play for a penalty. They can tell the refs what they saw after the fact. It is in the rulebook it isn't really an opinion based situation.
