They didn't have to be a starter. They just needed someone to split games with Stuart Skinner. You're not getting a bonafide #1 goalie through UFA/trade usually.

Skinner gets pulled every playoffs and you're relying on Pickard to save the season if that happens again.

Stolarz career high is 28 games and Broissoit is 24. That's not much of a split if you're asking the other guy to play 50+

That's because they were behind goalies who have played 60+.

What do you think, Pickard is the better option?

They're both massive upgrades on Pickard, but they'd wouldn't be solving the Skinner problem. You'd just get better goaltending from your backup.

You can start them in the playoffs over Skinner if they outplay him. Starting Pickard as your starter is a disaster so you're once again betting the season on Skinner.

They could have traded for Logan Thompson. They didn't. They decided to stick it out with Skinner and Pickard.

Even if Vegas wanted a first and a prospect, Logan was clearly a better goalie than Skinner, even at the time.

Hell, Mike Grier is a friendly trading partner, we could've landed Askarov. Or Mackenzie Blackwood...

Kevin Lankinen was dirt cheap, still available in August, and was at least a proven NHL backup, unlike Picks, who had been in the AHL for a while before Campbell fell apart.

Now all we have for options are...Gibson? James Reimer? And yes, I believe even those guys would be more trustworthy in net than Stu and Pickard. But they aren't the upgrades those other goalies would've been.

In short...Oilers need a goalie more than they need "toughness" (which they're getting when Kane returns) or a RHD.

The Broberg/Holloway fiasco happened way after free agency. Happened nearly 2 months later. The Oilers having to manage a new GM didn't stop them from signing Arvidsson/Skinner.

Fun fact: Holloway (2.2 million/season) has 6 more points than Arvidsson ($4 mil) and Jeff Skinner ($3 mil) combined...

The Oilers have McD and Draisaitl because Oilers management were idiots who continually failed enough to luck into drafting two generational players, but those two generational players don't have any Cups despite playing together for ten years because management never stopped being idiots.

Putting blind faith in Skinner because he played well in 40% of his playoff games last postseason is proof of this.

Hronek late to his check and Kulich scores.
Although the center should be helping out in front there.

yup
Edmonton started on 2nd base the day they drafted McDavid and haven't got it done largely due to their own inept front office.

Not impressed with the caps team but Thompson is just playing unreal. That team is where they are in the standings solely because of him.
Horseshit. They lead the league in GF. They are second in GA. They are first in goal differential. He's a big part of what is going right, especially at present, but he is far from the only reason. They've spent most of the year scoring goals in droves.

The additions of Chychrun, Roy, and especially Dubois have been massive.

Washington is a good team, Thompson isn’t the sole reason they won tonight.

Quinn Hughes is so incredibly good. I don’t watch him often, but he’s one of those guys- you’ll notice the play even if you didn’t know he was on the ice.

Here I thought Vancouver would rally around Myers and support him through this troubling time…… turns out they won’t

If only he could play 60 minutes

I get what you're saying, but the typical "cheap depth" signings to fill out the roster is normal for most teams and they probably had those two earmarked ahead of time. Just seems like the timing of potentially trading for a goalie could have been effected by the Broberg/Holloway thing and they just stood pat on the Pickard extension.
